Mario Country

Standard

Hey there! I'm MegaMan1987. I discovered SMW Hacking in early 2017, and made two hacks afterwards. I just discovered this site three days ago so I decided join! Anyways here is a hack I've been working on since yesterday, Mario Country. I've done the main overworld (it isn't 100% finished but it's around 50% complete). This hack has Custom Music, Custom ExGFX, Custom Sprites and Custom Blocks.
Here's some levels with some screenshots.

A FAMILIAR PLACE (Status: FINISHED!)

PLATFORMS! (Status: Unfinished)

HOVERING AROUND (Status: Unfinished)

The Overworld (Status: Sorta Finished)
This is MegaManFan1987, signing off.
Oh boy, where to begin...

Well, first off, welcome to SMW Central! ...Now that that's out of the way, let's get into these levels.

"A FAMILIAR PLACE"
You shouldn't have official Nintendo levels in your hack, the point of a hack is to showcase your own level designs and ideas. Adding 1-1 from SMB1 is doing nothing for your hack, since everyone here has played it before and you're just lazily throwing in classic levels just for reference's sake.

"PLATFORMS"
Not much to say about the screens you showed, but the mushroom platform's stems probably shouldn't be green. The detailed backgrounds clash with SMW's simple cartoony style, as well.

"HOVERING AROUND"
Assuming this level's gimmick is centered around hovering around obstacles with FLUDD, the level design doesn't look...too bad. But spamming Volcano Loti in a tight space along with Munchers and Chucks is a big no-no, and this doesn't seem to be a kaizo hack. That's only going to bring a world of slowdown and artificial difficulty, which I doubt is what you want.

Overworld
This actually doesn't look too terrible for your first hack, (I've seen much worse) but this still has much room for improvement. It just looks really sloppy, some tiles don't make sense, (such as the cliff tiles in the water, which I assume is part of a beach) and just perspective errors in general.

Also, since this an entirely custom hack, I'd suggest making custom palettes for your levels and overworld. This original SMW palettes are pretty boring to look at.

A FAMILIAR PLACE - I saw YT videos of people remaking various levels from different Mario games. So I thought it was good to remake them. This isn't the only remake though, as I am remaking Cut Man's level from Mega Man 1.

PLATFORMS! - It gave me those palettes when I applied them so I will fix it. Also I really like the DKC Backgrounds so they are going to be used a bunch of times.

HOVERING AROUND - It is based of the FLUDD sprite. I don't plan for a lot of areas being Kazio-ish but I plan on there being quite a few of them.

Anyways, I have just started work on a level. It has no name yet but I will come up with one in the mean time.

The detailed Kong Fused Cliffs background clashes terribly with the SMW Foreground, Epic-Manky already pointed that out so it seems that you don't listen to critisism.

Otherwise this seems pretty good for a first hack, but your graphical matches should be better.
If you're on Firefox 70+, and you don't see the blur effect, go to about:config and enable layout.css.backdrop-filter.enabled and gfx.webrender.all
For the best aesthetics, use Chrome, or with some settings, Firefox.

Colour scheme based on the awesome ViM theme, Gruvbox.
Hey guys! Sorry that I haven't been too active lately. Anyways here's some updates!
I've changed the palette for the beach on the Overworld

Speaking of the beach on the Overworld here is a level for it! It was recycled from one of my older hacks (Before I found out about this site) also with a few differences.

As far as level design goes, your beach level looks pretty nice. Though judging the lack of enemies, I'm gonna assume that this stage isn't finished yet.
One complaint though, the tileset looks too...well, simple. Lacks any detail or shading of any kind. The trees look weird, and the cracked blocks (shown in the first and third level screens) look really bad. Not sure if you found this tileset or if you drew it yourself, but I'd suggest editing or changing it to make it look better.

the fact that he didn't change every single thing one person said is not indicative of not being able to 'listen to critisism'. criticism is just as fallible as work itself.

with that in mind, clash is a stupid criticism and the DKC backgrounds shouldn't be on this site if nobody should use them
Very very very shortly, this drab, workaday world and everything in it will be changed forever! Follow us into the golden country, into the empire of the senseless!

I just said that the realistic backgrounds clashed with the cartoony SMW style. That doesn't mean hacks with a more detailed art direction couldn't make use of them.

A lot of people like to use DKC Backgrounds, in fact. If you're doing a more graphically detailed hack and you use these, kudos from me. Me (and epic_manky) are saying that they clash with the very cartoony SMW style.
