Getting gold on every mission is damn near fucking impossible, not to mention incredibly tedious. This is because many of the missions require luck, frame perfect timing (aka luck), or abusing the incredibly dumb yet cheating AI. The mission for scaling the eiffel tower comes to mind, in particular; not only do you have to be damn lucky or precisely trained to actually get the arrows right, you also have to hope the AI does stupid things with its turns.

Speaking of bad AI, there's another single player mode where you fight against progressively more difficult AI teams. Actually finishing this mode and getting the highest rank would be literally impossible, except for the awful teamkilling AI. The optimal strategy later on when you're against multiple teams of level 9 AIs is to dig into a mountain and wait for the AI to kill themselves, which they will often do. There's something wrong with the AI where they'll start shooting their own allies if no enemies are reasonably targetable.
