#125: Add Categories & Organization to My Files

New FeatureOpen

I just remembered something that'd be a great addition to My Files while typing up a post. We need something like category folders that can organize files better. Perhaps we could even do file tags to filter through them.

Now the best way to handle this is that categories are only organizing files in appearance rather than where they're hosted (changing their URL location) as this would break many past linked content.

However, I don't see why we couldn't also allow that (physical category) but having an option to simply organize it in visual category folders could be good. Plus it might help me find what I really need in the first place.

One other minor addition could be the ability to keep a particular file from being listed (hidden) if not a staff member. That could have some use if you're working on a WIP project or wanting only friends to know. Just some thoughts.
This would be very useful for users with a lot of files. Access options sound useful, too. This isn't a small or easy request at all, so I have no ETA for it.
I think it's a matter of perspective: is the file bin meant to be just a "bin" (a place to throw your SMWC-related files into just so they don't depend on external hosts), or is it meant to be a real personal storage space with the same use cases as, say, Dropbox? I think it used to be the former, though that may very well have changed - I'm just saying it helps to keep the intended scope in mind.

That said, it'd be a really helpful addition (my file bin is pretty messy indeed), and having the organization be only visual instead of changing the folder structure is also a great idea.

As far as I'm aware and aa far as I'm concerned, it is and has always been just a bin for files related to the site. Still, that doesn't mean we shouldn't make it a bit easier to organize your files, because even 20 MB of pictures can be messy if you use the file bin for everything.
It would be cool to see that happen.
