I always thought the GBA version looked better, even though I don't own it. I really wish I had it, it just looks so cool.
Come check out my new upcoming ROMhack!
Ignoring nostalgia, the All-Stars version is pretty much objectively superior in just about every aspect (unless there's something better about the NES version I'm forgetting).

I haven't actually played the GBA version, but while I am aware of that somewhat neat feature where you can go back to any world you want after beating the game, I doubt that the GBA version of any game could have been that much better than its SNES version.

I love SMASSMB3, I think it's basically THE definitive SMB3 experience. The sound and colors are just better, unless you really love HOO-HOO, JUST WHAT I NEEDED! that much.

The GBA version is a decent port. I had the e-reader cards so I was able to add in the cape from SMW and Turnips from SMB2USA. This added alot of fun that I couldn't get in my usual run of SMB3.
You can probably use emulators to add that same wacked-out experience and more if you include the JP only e-reader cards. However, the WiiU virtual console version of the game will have all the NA and JP levels and even an unreleased one I think. Surprised that they actually bothered to do all that, honestly.

If you're a speedrunner, the original NES version is superior simply because its faster and has less loading times. While it is very slight, the time gains in comparison do add up overtime in a 100% or a warpless run.

Otherwise, if you care just about aesthetics or extra content, then I'd look no further than SMAS SMB3 for aesthetics, or the GBA port for extra content.

What's your gambit?
the wii u rerelease of sma4 is probably the best. tons of little quality-of-life changes + world e make the screen crunch and gba audio worth it
I really wish that the best version—the GBA version—weren't held back by the circumstances of its release. I don't appreciate the screen crunch, washed-out colors (even if it's to accommodate for the screen), or the awful audio. Having all the add-on content in the Wii U port is fantastic but I just can't stomach the presentation.
You can never go wrong with the original version of anything. Especially with a gem like SMB3.

Although I do really like the aesthetic changes made in SM All Stars.

I like the colours, tbh.

the colors are pretty much untouched in sma4 though, the front/backlit sp models made the horrendous palette changes from early gba games unnecessary that late in its lifespan
idk why but I can't really stand the NES graphics - probably because I grew up on the SNES and GBA versions so that looks more "correct" to me. It just looks kinda bland and empty in comparison. I really wish they added the SNES/GBA style in Mario Maker, I would've actually made SMB3 levels otherwise.

Personally for me its almost the exact opposite. I sort of prefer the NES graphics they kinda have a nice style to them. But the SNES/GBA graphics are SO FUCKING OVERUSED!!!! That it makes me wanna throw up whenever I see them, I mean don't get me wrong! They did look pretty good for like the first several times I saw these graphics. But after a while lurking around in the Mario fan community for about a decade. Seeing these sprites get SO MOTHERFUCKING OVERUSED!!!! The unique novelty kinda wears off after a while... You know what I'm saying? Oh and two things that really bite the SNES/GBA style in the ass is that Most of the unused sprites are not even revamped for christ sake! Ever since I've learned about unused sprites/objects. Iv'e kind of had a nice soft spot for them. I don't know why but I do. Like for example. The little bird on the overworld map of SMW, The Boo key from SM64 and that unused desert block from SMB3... DIDN'T EVEN GET FUCKING REVAMPED FOR SMAS FOR SHIT'S SAKE!!!!!!!! No amount of shading, colors, or vertecies can EVER,EVERexcuse that... So that's my thoughts.

P.S. One thing I do like is that the Bob-Ombs are blue in SMAS, and It's not just some shitty lavender blue tricking colorblind morons into thinking It's purple. Yeah the blue is still incredibly faded(As if Nintendo is physically incapable of making any kind of Blue color without the "Incredibly vital and necessary" input of the red channel.)but It's still distinguishable as blue none the less.
I don't really like SMAS graphics. They just look so weird lifeless and desaturated. Even NSMB looks a bit better, but it's too plastic (come to think of it now, SMAS also has kinda plastic look to it)
To be truthful, the gameboy version was a bit better in some things to me. Mostly, I could beat the World 2 Fire Bros with a Fire Flower powerup and some button spamming in the SNES version, but in Super Mario Advance 4 and the Classic SNES remake, I hd to make a run and jump then drop straegy just to best the first of the two.Im still not sure if that was skill level at the time cause i got an SNES like in 2009 and i was playing my GBA in 2003. So it might of just benn me.
But im a nostalgia person, so SNES original is my favorite.
pretty sure SMAS could be built off some of SMB3's codebase given that a shitton of its unused data made its way into SMAS, compared to the other games included

also water theme on SNES alone makes me want to say that one :3
AFAIK the GBA version is a straight port of the SMAS version with some new features. It may have also made it so that Mario could take three hits instead of two? In any case, the GBA version was the one I actually played, and by all appearances it's a straight upgrade from SMAS, so that one gets my vote.
Edit: forgot about the WAHOO JUST WHAT I NEEDED. Didn't mind it when I was a kid, so it doesn't impact my vote, but I can see why others might not like it.
