Ceasefire

I hereby announce that the 2012 SMW Central Creativity Convention is over. As a result, so is the war.

The Triumvirate will now convene to determine the outcome of this war. An announcement detailing Their judgement will follow.

C3 Releases of the Day: Monday

Yep, I'm doing this once again. Having more varied opinions in here than just mine would have been nice, but I guess that's my fault for not announcing/organizing this better, heh.

CrispyEDIT: ^I was actually just about to make this post, so I'll amend to this one instead. < WYEdit: Oh hey, thanks. :)

Anyway, is it just me, or are the most impressive programming projects always released near the end of a C3? Patches and tools galore this time.

  • Vitor Vilela and imamelia are working on version 2.0 of Tessera, a new custom sprite inserter, and have uploaded a beta. It now even has a GUI, making it much more user-friendly than any Sprite Tool before it.
  • Kipernal gives music porters yet another reason to love this C3: he's released the second version of his MML Editing Tool, with a ton of new improvements over the old one.
  • p4plus2 has... released and announced so many potentially awesome things I can't even summarize them here. Just take a look for yourself.
  • FirePhoenix has released a "Pre-Alpha Demo" of Probable Non-Committance, a very well-designed and unique-looking hack. (Parts of it may remind you of SMWCP[2], though, for obvious reasons.) (Yeah, not a patch or tool for a change.)
  • ShadowFan-X would like to remind you of his HDMA gradient generator called GradientTool. He's already announced and released a few versions prior to C3, but it certainly deserves more attention than it got there.
  • Jimmy52905 has updated his Yoshi Player Patch once again, adding/changing some features and fixing quite a few bugs.
  • Red Chameleon released 15 fully self-composed tracks, intended for his hack, Eternal Devastation.
  • GN released a 4-level demo of his tentative-titled hack.
  • xjakku made a wonderful C3 Project. Word.
  • wagokoro_ (a.k.a. wa) updated his thread, including the release of all MML/TXT files to the Port Compilation he had shown on a previous date.

That's all for this C3 (as far as news posts go, anyway). Don't be disappointed if I haven't mentioned your stuff in these - interest and awesomeness are of course very subjective. I couldn't possible have listed all the things I like, so I've just mentioned those that stuck out to me as particularly impressive. And hey, maybe we can get these news posts organized better next time around (assuming it's been a good idea in the first place).

Hope you had fun this C3! I certainly did.

Don't forget about the 24 Hour Contest II and Overworld Contests coming up! Again, the 24 Hour Contest will be held on Saturday, May 26th. To quote a previous news post: "It will run from noon EST until noon EST on Sunday. The theme will remain undisclosed until then."

The Overworld Contest comes sometime during June, so keep your calendars checked!

C3 Releases of the Day: Sunday

Guess I'm going to do another one, seeing how nobody has done so yet.

  • Alcaro has created one of the most amazing things this C3: An emulator inside Lunar Magic (called Internal Emulator by LM, and LMSW in any other cases) that allows you to play your levels in LM directly, even editing them during gameplay. Both fun and useful for many, and an admirable work for sure.
  • Although it's already been mentioned in another news post, I might as well mention it again: Giant Shy Guy has made a Teaser Trailer for SMWCP2, SMW Central's upcoming collaboration hack.
  • FPI, too, has shown a trailer - not for SMWCP2, but for his current hack, The Second Reality Project 2 (Reloaded). Definitely a trailer worth watching.
  • Nep-Enut's GFX Pack thread has caught my attention, and stuck out to me as one of the best GFX release threads this Sunday. A very well-made set of NSMB(W) styled graphics that everyone making a similarly-styled hack should consider.
  • S.N.N. did manage to whip up something for C3 after all - namely, a level sampler for Gimmick, his current hack. The level design has evolved quite a bit from puzzle-based hacks like Keytastrophe, not to mention the great music.
  • Zildjian has released "Capture That Cake!", a retro-styled hack with a really neat atmosphere. God, 2006 was six years ago already?
  • NMI finishes today's list with a (literally) random ASM patch called "Random RAMpage". Probably not too useful (in a nutshell, it does random things to the game when applied), but all the more fun to play with.
  • (and as a little bonus, here's a hack I've just worked up the guts to play - Mother of God is all I can say, except for maybe "beware" and "fucking lol". Patgangster.)

Woo, quite a lot of stuff today. Looking forward to this last day of C3!

Lunar Magic 2.00 has been released!

Yes, Lunar Magic has finally become 2.0. The main addition of this version is the ability to load an emulator inside the editor DLL by Alcaro, which must be downloaded separately and can be found in this thread.

There are other minor tweaks and bugfixes in this version, the full list is in the LM Help file, as usual.

SMWCP2 Trailer

Another one of the planned releases during C3 was a small teaser trailer of SMW Central Production 2, which is actually on the verge of completion (three levels remaining and then the overworld!). Naturally, if you've been following the project since its conception last January (1.4ish years), then you've likely seen quite a few of the levels in the video. However, if you've been avoiding the forum to keep most of it a secret .. well, these short level snippets might be just the thing to tickle your fancy.

Here is a link to the teaser trailer. Credit goes to Giant Shy Guy for creating it (you can find his actual thread in the C3 forum).

Also, a common question regarding this project is "Is it as difficult as the first SMWCP"? The answer here is an echoing "no". Levels have been thoroughly tested before insertion without save states in order to ensure a difficulty curve which is as smooth as possible.

Have a great C3!

C3 Releases of the Day: Saturday

Because no one else has made it so far.

All the releases listed here were submitted after WYE's news post; although depending on your timezone it's possible that not all of them were submitted today. The submitions are listed in no particular order.

-A Severed Freedom - The Final Trailer by Supertails
A trailer that shows the work of Supertails during the last three years: a very promising hack that will not only contain a lot of great new graphics and music, but also clever gimmicks and a very interesting plot. There's no wonder why many of us are waiting for this hack.

-*ATTENTION SHOPPERS* by Ladida
A thread with several cluster sprite effects and a Master Hand boss with all of it's attacks from SSBM, certainly a very amazing custom boss.

-2 Player Co-op - C3 2012 edition by Noobish Noobsicle
A quite impressive patch that allows two people to play at the same time, just like in NSMBW. This is probably a very nice addition to any SMW hack.

-DKC Soundtrack project [Collab] by Slash Man
Even though this thread didn't get a lot of attention it's still a very good one. The music from the DKC series is really nice but very complex at the same time; Slash Man and his team are doing a really hard job so we can insert those awesome soundtracks in our hacks. They definitely deserve some recognition.

-This thread contains C3 things (mostly Graphics and a hack demo) by Neo carld923
From all the items present in that thread, the most outstanding ones are probably the custom graphics; several good looking background and tilesets that will surely give a really nice touch to your hack.

So yeah, that's all for now. We still have two days left of C3, so keep submitting good stuff guys. And don't be disappointed if you didn't appear on the list, you can still make it tomorrow.

C3 Releases of the Day: Friday

This is something we thought of to encourage people to not release all of their C3 stuff on the first day.
Basically, at the end of each C3 day (and it's 10PM in my timezone), a staff member will make a news post summarizing the C3 releases they found most interesting on that day. This will of course be highly subjective - don't be too disappointed if you aren't mentioned. (Rest assured, though, the System/Chester war will have no effect on your stuff being mentioned.)

Here we go, in no particular order:

  • Vitor Vilela has brought music porting more than just a step further with his brand-new tool called AM4 Player. This tool is able to play SMW music just by loading its .txt file, allowing music porters to quickly preview their work without having to reinsert and open the ROM every time they make a change to it.
  • Hadron has shown new and very neat-looking screenshots (and a no-less-promising video) of his upcoming hack The Big Boo's Legion 2. This is a hack I'm personally really looking forward to playing.
  • Underway once again proves his ability to make aesthetically pleasant semi-vanilla levels, showing not only screenshots and videos but also releasing a small demo of his hack, Choconilla Paradox.
  • wiiqwertyuiop (a name that's very annoying to type on a QWERTZ keyboard) has good news for all the Zelda fans among you. Not only did he create an entire disassembly of A Link To The Past, he also provides a few useful tools for it. Very impressive!
  • Last but not least, Ersanio certainly deserves a honorary mention for his... interesting piece of ASM work.

That's all from me for today - congratulations if your entry's in here (though you don't exactly win anything), and don't be disappointed if it isn't.

I'm hoping for another staff member to write up a post like this tomorrow evening.

SMWC3

I hereby announce the launch of the 2012 Super Mario World Central Creativity Convention, commonly abbreviated as C3. I'm instructed to tell you to enjoy the event despite the ongoing hostilities.

Heads up!

If you are caught reregistering during this event in order to "cheat" and join the other side, both your rereg and your main account will be banned until the end of C3, meaning you'll miss out on posting whatever you wanted to AND you'll miss out on commenting on others' works. Don't ruin this for yourself and everyone else.

Oh, and if some of you could please lighten up a bit, that would be swell. Thanks!

24 Hour Contest II and Overworld Contest

The next 24 hour level design contest will be held on Saturday, May 26th, and it will run from noon EST until noon EST on Sunday. The theme will remain undisclosed until then.

By popular request, an overworld contest will also be held at some point in June. I know so many people have wanted one for a long time now, so it would be senseless to ignore those requests.
