I'm formally requesting an SMB elevator platform., please.
It should have the following properties:
-It should be 48x16 (3 block lengths laid out side-by-side)
-Use extra property byte 1 to determine weather it moves up or down
-Of course, it should be ridable.
-if not too much, it should use extra property byte 2 to determine weather to uses the standard size or use a single 16x16 tile.
There's no need to provide graphics, but I would really appreciate it if someone could make this one. !! I should also note that I intend it to be used in conjunction with a custom sprite generator. Thanks!
Weather you need a block or a sprite really depends on what you want to accomplish in the hack. What you want to keep in mind is that blocks just sit there whereas sprites can be made to move around. And, as far as ASM is concerned blocks are often much simpler, but also much more limited. Sprites, thus, are usually more complex. I believe there are less opcodes available for use with blocks... unless I'm on some awesome crack. I might be.
Great stuff, man! I can't wait to see what else you come up with. And, putting that notice about 'NO REQUESTS' up is a great idea. Just don't get too frustrated when the inevitable noob neglects to read it. You're a great ASM hacker and it would really suck not having as part of the community.
Hazzah! This is definitely a great thing to have in the forum. Also, if you do add in more info to it specifically geared towards custom sprites it will be the most powerful force in the universe!! ... Wait. Thats the Deathstar. It will be an even more kick-ass tut than it already is. And I agree that you've done a great job of making the concepts more understandable. I and I'm sure many others have been waiting for something like this. Hazzah!
I agree with jesus. what I is really needed is a more detailed explanation of how to set up a working sprite. The technical stuff about TRASM.EXE etc etc is very basic info that a noob ASM hackers should know before they even get to this tutorial. Definitly what the community really needs is info on proper sprite animation and maybe a lesson or 2 on some more advanced concepts that there is no info about.
It isn't Schwa's fault you don't get it. And after the third attempt at an explanation anyone would get annoyed especially when the answer to your question is in the text you're quoting.
Let me see if you understand this: the content of a table depends entirely on what it is being used for and referenced by. Therefore, your question is pointless as the sample in the tutorial is out of context. Schwa was even gracious enough to give you a second example. You should be appreciative that he even tried to clarify it.
This is gonna sound old fashioned, but... I keep track of everything on paper and I make notes. I suppose this could easily be done in notepad or whatever. It really helps me keep track of everything. I also do some of the things that others have mentioned about palettes and map16 pages.
