Hello everybody! Over the past few months, Yoshi has been working on a new hack called Super Mario World Custom 2. It is yoshi's first hack, but yoshi has been testing it on ZSNES a lot. It is an eight level, one world hack currently, but I eventually plan to have eight worlds. If anyone is not busy, you might as well check it out. It may not be Mario's Keytastrophe, but it is still worth checking out.
(On an unrelated note, I happen to be a big yoshi fan if you have not figured it out by my username, which is why I decided to write this way. And no, I do not talk or write this way outside of the internet.)
Yoshi sorry for that. Yoshi having trouble posting images in this thread. If you want to see some screens, copy and paste this into the address bar:
The left most image is a picture of the item shop. You can buy those three items here if you need one. The message block shows the prices of the items. By the way this is the only place you can get feathers.
The second image to the left is from Lava Cavern. It is a somewhat short level where mario rides on skull platforms to cross the lava pools.
The second image from the right is from Coin Land, the first level yoshi made. This level is built almost entirely out of coins. So it is a race to get to the P-switches before they run out. Don't worry, there is plenty of room for error here. Here is a tip, when you see the goal, follow the arrow to find another P-switch, then press it near the goal.
The right most image shows the level Snow Pass. It is a somewhat simple stage where yoshi used the Exanimation feature of Lunar Magic to make it look like it is snowing.
Edit: This post is now useless, because yoshi has posted new screenshots and learned how to post screenshots in a forum thread. Also, that link no longer works.
Yoshi isn't trying to go off topic in yoshi's thread, but, I don't really care if others like or don't like yoshi's writing style. If you like it, good, if you don't, thats good too. Yoshi knows that not everyone will like it, since you can't please everyone all the time. The reason yoshi is writing like this is because yoshi wants to be creative, and be a little silly, with these posts. It could be worse, at least yoshi isn't using L33T speak or something similar.
Back on topic, if anyone finds some design flaw in yoshi's hack or has a suggestion on something yoshi should do in the hack, let yoshi know. Yoshi wants this hack to be as good as any other good Super Mario World hacks.
By the way Tomato, yoshi will make the item shop better looking. As for the ? blocks in Snow Pass, which pallette needs improving: the pallette for an unused ? block or the pallette for a used ? block?
Edit: Yoshi just got rid of the cement blocks in the item shop and replaced them with something better looking in the version yoshi is working on.
Yoshi doesn't know why Nintendo didn't just port SMAS to vitual console or made a new SMAS that had more games on it. Sounds pointless to yoshi, unless you can't get online on the wii, but even then, yoshi thinks nintendo should have made a new SMAS with more games.
Merry Christmas everyone! Yoshi wanted to let everyone who plays yoshi's hack to know that the levels in yoshi's hack will be altered in some ways to make them better and/or more interesting. Yoshi will add secrets, make the levels longer, add ExGFX, vary the terrain, etc. That way, there will be a reason to play those levels again in the next demo yoshi makes. Also, the title screen, intro, name, and Overworld are only temporary. They will be changed.
Hello everyone. Yoshi been busy playing the video games yoshi got for christmas, like Metroid: Zero Mission and Donkey Kong Country Returns, to work on hack. Yoshi has been thinking of new levels for hack, though. One level idea yoshi has is a level that will look upside down, where the ground will be above mario and the sky below. Another idea yoshi has is for a level that features the time traveling gimmick from The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, where Mario must travel between two similar levels to reach the exit. There is also a level in yoshi's hack that yoshi didn't use in the current demo. It is similiar to Coin Land, except that you use stars to cross a forest of munchers. Yoshi plans on making that level differ from Coin Land in some way. Originally, that level was a forest of floating munchers, but after yoshi learned that floating munchers are bad, yoshi went to the forest to eat the munchers. Yoshi just kidding. Yoshi actually deleted all floating munchers in that level and rooted all remaning ones to solid ground or the ceiling. Thats all the updates yoshi has for Super Mario World Custom 2 for now. Keep checking for more updates on yoshi's hack.
(To answer your question Green_raven, there are three reasons why I write in the third person outside of parenthesis. The first reason is because I am a big yoshi fan. The second reason is this is how yoshi talked in the Super Mario World Show. The last reason is because I wanted to be a little creative with how I write my posts. If something I write would be too confusing to read in third person, then I will write it in first person and enclose it in parenthesis, like in this post. If you like my writing style, that is fine. If you don't, that is fine too. Oh and I don't talk like yoshi in person or write school assignments like that, only here. If you want to see how yoshi talked in the cartoon, copy and paste this link in the address bar:
Update: After yoshi wrote the last post, yoshi decided to start making the upside down level. Everything, but the enemies, is upside down, even the goal post and the background.
Yoshi sorry for that. Yoshi isn't very good at advertising. When yoshi finishes the next demo, yoshi will take pictures with more going on or one that shows a unique theme for one of the levels.
By the way, you can't tell from the screenshots, but yoshi has used custom music in Super Mario World Custom 2. If you haven't played the hack yet, these are the songs yoshi is using: Termina Field, Twilight Princess Hidden Village, Yoshi's Island Castle, Yoshi's Island Big Boss (the boss music at the end of level 8 of each world), Super Mario RPG battle music (I used this in the bonus rooms), Link's Awakening Lost Woods, Song of Storms, and two songs from Mario's Keytastrophe. I also changed the P-switch music to Super Mario Galaxy Fire Mario. All of these songs can be found on this site.
Update: Yoshi found out that someone reviewed yoshi's hack on youtube. Unfortunately, he gave yoshi's hack a D+. It turns out that there were some flaws that yoshi didn't notice. However, that won't stop yoshi from improving the hack. Yoshi just made a new version of the hack that fixes most of the flaws mentioned in that video, and, as a bonus, an extra level. Yoshi has a question though. If you make a new version of a hack, how do you get rid of the old one so that there isn't two versions of the same hack on the site?
Thank you for that tip Bob Righter. Yoshi just submitted a new version (not a new demo) of yoshi's hack. This version fixes several flaws that were in the original version. All the changes are listed in the readme that comes with the hack. Yoshi finnally learned how to post pictures in this thread. So here they are:
Do not flip your computer monitor, the terrain in this level is supposed to look upside down.
Alternate caption: (Help! I've risen and can't get down!)
The new and improved Lava cavern, now with a visible ceiling, bats, and lava that is less flat.
Actually Scrooge, there are prices listed for the items in the item shop. That is what the message block is for, but if you must know the prices here: mushrooms are 10 coins, flowers are 30 coins, and feathers are 50 coins. The item shop is also the only place to get feathers. As for the upside down level, yoshi has never heard of or played Cookie Crisis. The hacks yoshi has played are:
-Mario's Keytastrophe (One of the best hacks I've played)
-Mario's Amazing Adventure
-Super Mario Infinity
-Super Demo World: The legend Continues
-Chaos Complexx (That was a funny hack)
-The Second Reality Project Reloaded
-Super Mario World Master Quest
-Yoshi-Dawn of Darkness Demo
-Item Abuse (That hack is the only hack not found on this site)
If yoshi gets inspired to do something in Super Mario World Custom 2 from another hack. It is most likely going to come from one of the above hacks (probably not Item Abuse, though)
(As for your last comment, I am not trying to annoy anyone. I already said why I chose to write this way in an earlier post. I am being careful with what I write outside of parenthesis, so that it isn't confusing to read. Here is an example of something I won't write outside of parenthesis: "Yoshi thinks yoshi is cool." Am I talking about yoshis in general or am I refering to myself? If I were to write something like that, I would write it in parenthesis like this: "I think yoshi is cool" or "I think I am a cool person." If I write something that would be too hard to understand in third person, then I will write it in first person inside of parenthesis, like I am doing right now.)
Update: Yoshi just discovered that yoshi made a huge mistake with version 1.1 of yoshi's hack. Yoshi forgot to move mario's sprite off of the test map. That map is where yoshi tests new levels before giving players access to them.. Yoshi is so sorry to anyone who downloaded version 1.1 of yoshi's hack. Please do not download the hack until version 1.2 is up.
Update: Yoshi just submitted v1.2 of yoshi's hack. Which fixes the fatal flaw and a couple other things. From now on, yoshi will start a new file and play through the whole hack before submitting it, even if yoshi has already tested all the levels, just to see if mario goes to the test map. Yoshi is still very sorry for that and yoshi will make sure it never happens again. If any of the moderators are reading this, go right ahead and nuke the original version and v1.1 of yoshi's hack. V1.2 has all the updates v1.1 has, but without the fatal flaw v1.1 had.
Edit: A moderator has just deleted the original and v1.1 of yoshi's hack. So now, only v1.2 should be available.
Yoshi bets that whoever played v1.1 of yoshi's hack found out that there was something wrong once they got to the overworld. After the intro you would see this:
This is the test map for yoshi's hack where yoshi tested levels before switching to the Star Road map. Yoshi didn't notice that Mario would be taken here after the intro because yoshi used a saved game to test out the levels (That saved game took Mario to the Star Road map. If I were to start a new game in v1.1, Mario would have been taken to the test map instead.) Yoshi doesn't plan on making a new version until yoshi has made at least four worlds and has planned out the overworld. Yoshi will continue posting updates on it here, though. Don't forget to comment on the hack, though. Yoshi will read every one to find out what works and what doesn't.
Yoshi has been thinking of new level ideas. While some are straightfoward like some of the ones already in the hack, others are going to be more interesting. One level idea yoshi had was for a level with the main mechanic from either The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages or The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. In that level, you must travel between 2-4 different levels (The number of levels depends on which game I choose) to make it to the goal. Yoshi also has an idea for a level made entirely out of switch blocks. So, depending on which switch palaces you visit, it changes the layout of the level. Some parts become harder, while others become easier. Yoshi will make sure that level can't be reached unless you activate a certain switch palace, though.
No matter what yoshi comes up with, you can be sure that yoshi will glue together most of the things Cutoffness Man cuts and that all floating munchers will be sprayed with pesticide and removed.
Yoshi doesn't plan on making a version 1.3 until yoshi makes four worlds and has the entire overworld planned out, which could be a month from now. Yoshi made v1.1 because yoshi saw a video of someone playing the original version of yoshi's hack and wanted to fix the problems yoshi didn't notice through playtesting. Yoshi made v1.2 because v1.1 was unplayable due to mario being stuck on the test map.
(Did you know that yoshi was potrayed as childish in the Super Mario World cartoon? That, and the fact that I myself am a little childish, is why my posts come off as childish. If you want to see how yoshi talked in the cartoon, just copy and paste the URL to Yoshiart.com I provided in one of my previous posts in this thread.)
Edit: Since yoshi's hack has been removed, v1.3 will fix most, if not all of the problems v1.2 has. V1.4 will be the four world hack. (Unless v1.3 is removed.)
Thank you for that comment georgevssonic, oh and good luck on anything you may be working on. Yoshi has been watching videos of bad hacks and reading the hack removal logs to see what is unacceptable in hacks. Yoshi is inspired by these hacks to do the opposite of what they do. So even if yoshi's hack isn't the best, you can be sure that yoshi will avoid most of the bad stuff that yoshi sees in those hacks. As a side note, for those hacks that have a lot, and yoshi means a lot, of obvious problems in them, yoshi thinks the creators do it on purpose or they simply don't care about the rules here. Obviously that's not always the case, but sometimes it seems so.
So how is everyone enjoying yoshi's hack? Is there anything yoshi can do to improve it for the next demo? Yoshi began working on the overworld yesterday, and wow is this going to be tedious. Yoshi feels that yoshi bit off more than yoshi can chew, and yoshi can chew a lot. But if a custom overworld is better than an unedited overworld, then yoshi will make one either way. Yoshi doesn't have any screenshots yet for it, but yoshi will have some screenshots when the overworld is finished.
Thank you georgevssonic for pointing out those things. Yoshi will fix them all for the next demo. Here is what I have to say to each one (in the order of your comments):
- Yoshi was originally going to use the test map as the overworld, but yoshi thought that was too plain and boring, so yoshi decided to temporarily use the Star Road map as the overworld. Yoshi is working on an overworld, but if I don't have the will to do it, then yoshi will post the world names and ask someone to do it, like you suggested.
- Yoshi noticed that too. Yoshi changed all the note block graphics to the same thing, so yoshi doesn't know why it does that. Maybe yoshi should check the graphics file again.
-Yoshi didn't notice that, yoshi will fix that. These levels aren't set in stone. While they do work, yoshi will add or change things to the levels to make them more fun, interesting, or less bland.
- Originally, that bridge was half bridge, half used coin block. If you hit the P-Switch, a ton of coins would appear over the bridge, but half the bridge would also disappear. Yoshi noticed that it created cut-off, so yoshi changed the bridge. Since mario can no longer touch the boiling mud, yoshi might as well remove it.
- Soda Lake is level 1 in Lunar Magic, so yoshi used the palette it was already set to, But yoshi will change that and the message block flaw. By the way, did you find the second message block in that level to be funny?
- Yoshi noticed that. Yoshi will replace the purple coins with something else. By the way, did you know that yoshi put those coins there for a reason? As for the cement block spam, some of those cement blocks in Forest Ride used to be floating munchers. Even though cement blocks are better than floating munchers, yoshi will replace the cement blocks with something else.
-Yoshi is aware that yoshi used the super fast scrolling speed for Frost Cave, because yoshi wanted to make a fast paced and somewhat challenging level. Yoshi knows mario can't jump when the screen scrolls at a certain speed, but that is why yoshi broke the level up into sections. Also, once the screen scrolls fast enough so that mario can't jump, there aren't any enemies or obstacles that mario has to jump over anyway unti you reach the pipe (or a wall). Yoshi tested that level more than the others to see if it was doable, and it is. Here is a hint, if you found the P-switch, the best time to press it is a bit before you see the first charging chuck in the second section.
-That slope, that mario is standing on in the screenshot, continues offscreen. How yoshi sees it, if a slope goes offscreen, then the part near where the slope disappears is safe. If a cliff goes offscreen, then it is not going to be safe offscreen. Usually, when yoshi hears about "Use of the bottom row", it usually is flat ground that is offscreen, not sloped. Either way, yoshi will try to fix that.
Oh and thank you for playing yoshi's hack.
Edit: Yoshi got Ninji'd
Update: Uh oh! Yoshi's hack have been removed! Yoshi will read the removal log and fix the flaws and submit v1.3. (That Metal Gear style quote was intentional, it wasn't a typo)
Yoshi has made most of the improvements that were mentioned by georgevssonic and in the hack removal log. All yoshi has to do now is test it out and make a couple of new screenshots before yoshi uploads it.
Yoshi has just resubmitted Super Mario World Custom 2 v1.3 (which I accidentally forgot to put the v1.3 in the name). Yoshi has been busy in the last hour playtesting, so that yoshi can find any major problems with the levels. Yoshi is now sure that this will be accepted, but you can never really tell. The full list of changes are in the readme. Like before, if there are any problems, tell me here and yoshi will fix them.
To answer your question about the P-Switch georgevssonic, the P-switch can be found by using one of the pipes in the first section of Frost Cave (Not the one you must enter to beat the level.)
Oh and yoshi made a new screenshot and took a new version of an existing one. Here they are:
From the makers of Deadly Grape Soda comes Acid Coke. What will they think of next?
(Hey! You got my Yoshi's Island in your Super Mario World!)
Even though v1.2 of yoshi's hack was deleted, the person who wrote the removal log for it said that it was well designed considering that it was a first hack. Yoshi feels that all that browsing of this site and the comments some people have made are paying off. If it wasn't for all the help, you would see things like floating munchers and bland level design. At one point, yoshi had an idea to make a level with only glitched graphics, but yoshi quickly discarded that idea after learning that that was a bad idea. Also, Muncher Forest was originally an area filled with nothing but munchers, but now it is free of all floating munchers.
Update: Yoshi forgot to mention, but another thing yoshi is going to do in the hack is write silly and/or interesting messages in the message blocks. Some will give out tips in a not-so-obvious way (Mario's Fortune Today), some will have to do with the hack in some way (The second message block of Soda Lake comes to mind), some will give out warnings to silly obstacles (Acid Coke, anyone?), and some will make a reference to something else or put a new twist on a classic quote (Yoshi makes a reference to the Super Mario World Cartoon when you free him). Yoshi will see what yoshi can do to make this hack funny while following the hack submission guidelines.
Update: Yoshi isn't going to be able to post or work on the hack for a couple of days, since yoshi has to go spend some time with yoshi's relatives. Yoshi will be back on monday. Oh and happy New Year everyone.
Yoshi has been kidnapped by ninjas! Was anyone a bad enough dude to rescue yoshi? Yoshi is kidding. Yoshi found out today that someone wanted to do a Let's Play on yoshi's hack. Yoshi will allow him to do that. Unlike the last time yoshi saw a video of someone playing yoshi's hack, yoshi won't make a version 1.4 that fixes the errors of version 1.3, unless the hack is removed from this site, an instant removal reason is discovered (I am pretty sure there isn't any), or yoshi finishes demo 2 of Super Mario World Custom 2.
Oh and yoshi thought about the overworld, and yoshi decided that an interesting custom overworld is going to be too difficult for yoshi to make. Yoshi isn't sure if yoshi should post that request here or on the request page (Is a request for a custom overworld too big to go in the request section or do all requests, no matter what, go in the request section?). Yoshi will post what was planned for the overworld once yoshi is sure where yoshi should post the request. Either way, nobody can take that on until yoshi posts the details here. Oh and yoshi will give credit to whoever makes the overworld for yoshi's hack once yoshi posts the details.
