Eh, it's unlikely that I'll have the drive to finish an entry, but I figured I'd go ahead and ask anyways. Just what constitutes a tweak to a resource hosted on the site. Like, obviously taking a goomba disassembly and using it as a base for a screen-spanning mode 7 boss would be against the rules, but where would you draw the line between tweaks and a new boss entirely? Would adding some sort of trigger to change something in the level when a boss is defeated be okay, or perhaps adding more animation frames to a custom sprite? What about changing it's size? Is there a specific set of rules we should adhere to or is it just a matter of using our own common sense to determine what is and isn't going too far with tweaking a submitted sprite?

Alright, thanks for the clarification! I was assuming that changing the animation code would be allowed, but either way that's not really a big issue, as it wouldn't affect gameplay whatsoever and a level would be just fine without it.

Surely you mean 0x20 or %100000, correct? Also, I say we go big or go home. Cap it at 255 or we'll be wasting 2 whole bits.

Joking aside, upon rereading the rules, I'm curious about the mention of submitting videos to the SMWCentral YouTube page rather than our own. I'm assuming this means we'll be doing anonymous entries to prevent bias? If so, should we link to an unlisted YouTube video for the contest manager to download and reupload, or do we upload the video file to DropBox or something?

Thanks everyone for entering the contest. The actual contest will start within the next 24 hours when Vitor is here, so stay tuned for his post! Good luck everyone!

Vitor is busy right now, so that's why I'm posting this.

Thanks for letting us know, LX5!

It's ok, no worries. You've been added. The ROUND 000 wasn't technically started so I can still add people if they're interested until the actual event starts.

However... Tomorrow we will have an very important event that requires everyone's participation, including who is not subscribed. Soon™

Well, I hope I can do something for that then, since I'll likely be busy most of the day. (Hoping it's not a 24SMW Level event, since this will be the first time I know about it and still can't participate.)

I'd say that surely your code needs to be in a format that could at least theoretically be modified by someone, even if that requires them to know what they're doing. I'm sure (and hoping) that insertion of uncompressed graphics in .bin files would be acceptable, since I tend to be someone who is a sucker for dynamically loaded graphics and I don't feel like typing out a huge long .db table of %00000100, 01110000, etc.

Huh, voted for power for the same reason. Now that you mention it, there isn't much in the terms of bonus stages either (even less in fact), though we certainly have plenty of enemies. I feel confident in my ideas for all 3 themes, though the question is just how much would I be able to implement?

This is basically a spinning dynamic sprite with the player's graphics, following the player and hiding his graphics. If you're wondering why it's flickering, it's because of how many frames it takes to upload it and how quick it does it, so the faster I make the sprite rotate it, the more it breaks and flickers. I could slow it down a bit, but that'd look weird honestly...

Wow, minus the slight flicker, that looks really nice! Mind sharing how you managed to hide Mario's sprites? That sounds like a good (albeit hacky) way of expanding Mario's graphics beyond one bank. (There's probably some routine you jump to in the game that I'm forgetting about due to rust.)

Heh, maybe your idea for what to do for the bonus stage is easier. My idea for it is the hardest to execute out of all my ideas for all three themes. I probably need to pick something simpler, but eh.

Hey, does anyone know if there's documentation on the different level modes for SMW? I'm in particular interested in the level modes used for bosses, but a large list of what all of them mean would be very much appreciated.

Last place, here I go!

You could always just blatantly steal a bonus stage from another game.

I agree. There should also be a way to post WIPs anonymously as well, for those who would like feedback on their work (and also to help motivate the other contenders to stop procrastinating).

Hello, I just used SNESBRR to convert a .wav sample to a .brr sample, but I wound up receiving the following error when inserting it into the ROM with AddMusicK:

Code
The sample "samples/customsfx\sound.brr" was of an invalid length (the filesize - 2 should be a multiple of 9). Did you forget the loop header?

I was under the assumption that SNESBRR would be adding headers and such for me, so do I have an invalid length of the sound? What lengths are valid, in case that is the problem so I can edit the sound? In case it helps, the sample is currently not looped, nor do I want it to be TBH.

Welp, I need help. Been working on a custom sprite, and it worked just fine last night, but for whatever reason, my compiler won't compile the sprite anymore, but will work again when I comment out some lines. The problem is, I'm fairly certain that it shouldn't be causing errors, I'll paste the code here, with the offending lines commented out, and you'll see what I mean:

Code
...
BCC Graphics
;STZ !RAM_VARIABLE
;LDA #$00010000
;STA !RAM_VARIABLE_2
BRA Graphics

(The RAM variables aren't actually called that, but I changed their names for confidentiality purposes.)
Is this just some sort of xkas thing? This was working just fine last night, but I added to the code, and it threw an error. After deleting all the code it still threw an error, and xkas's "Errors were detected while assembling the patch. Assembling aborted. Your ROM has not been modified." is the opposite of a helpful error message. For whatever reason, the code will work sometimes if I comment out one or two of the lines, but it seems fairly adamant about not letting me use one of the LDA, STA, and STZ opcodes in this one particular location of the sprite code.

Whoops! Forgot that I tried changing it to a hex value to see if that was the issue somehow, and forgot to change the $ back to a %. Fixing this issue doesn't keep from throwing an error, however.

STZ !RAM_VARIABLE might throw an error if the address is a long one (6 hex digits) since STZ can only be used on byte and word addressing.

The RAM addresses are $0DA1 and $0D9C respectively. So I don't think that could be it, especially since swapping out the STZ with a LDA #$00 STA $0DA1 didn't work.

That's the problem. Xkas (or at least the version bundled with Spritetool) isn't giving me useful output. I already am using Xkas, but the temp.log file only gives me this:

Code
INIT 008000
MAIN 00801A
Errors were detected while assembling the patch. Assembling aborted. Your ROM has not been modified.

Other than that, my last guess is that the branch for BCC Graphics is out of reach (too many opcodes between the branch and the actual label).
I can't really guess anything else from only the code snipped you've shown.

Dang, I don't think it's that either since there's less than 10 opcodes between this line and the jump. Could this be caused by the sprite somehow being inserted across two banks or something? Or is there at least a version of xkas with actually helpful error messages?

EDIT: Using free RAM within the first 0xFF bytes of memory for the STZ command seems to have fixed the error for some reason. Swapped it around with one of the other RAM values. It's incredibly stupid, as IIRC STZ is supposed to work with word length addresses, but at least it works.

Welp, been out of the music porting scene for long enough that my last composition is older than AddMusicK, but hopefully it won't be too criptic for me to derust at it. Hopefully I'll do better than my last attempt at SMWC Idol! (note to self, this time don't do original compositions unless I have to)

#BlessARAM, because it's getting a lot of hate around here.

I mean, if I hurry I should be fine with my entry, but since several other people seem to need the entry, I'll vote for an extension, as it gives me more time to polish things, or fix any unforeseen errors and glitches.

EDIT: Yeah, I'm going to definitely need it too at this rate.
