DDDchu, I guess you'll get PMed.

Yeah, but they still should get that fixed. People will use the bug to get their name known. Thats almost as good as the prize. Oh, and thanks a lot marioVSshadow. Now I'll use that to get MY name known. Okay, just joking...
Eh, sure. Why not? Kaizo hacking doesn't seem too ha-aaaaaaand I broke the ROM.
...wow...guess that system does suck. I think i'll start trading that out for a nice, well written paragraph.

Alright everyone. Here's a video that can say more than snapshots ever can. Keep in mind that the Graphics are still a little glitchy, but nothing thats not easily fixed. Oh, and sorry about the quality, the format I saved it as somehow slaughtered it:

(By the way, I'm pretty sure pipes to Bandit minigames still function. I've done it with an "invisible pipe" side exit before, so I don't see why a normal pipe would not. The main reason to use a door is that you always come out of entrance type 0.)

Sure thing!

Yeah, I know, its still unfinished, so its still subject to change. Glad you like it so far!

If Yoshi is on or near a screen boundary when taking a screen exit, the game may load the other screen's exit instead. Try creating a copy of that screen exit in screen 63, and see if that works.

Thanks! That worked!

EDIT: Also, I would like to know what tool you use to add/remove/move midway rings and goal rings. Does anyone know which tool to use, or do I have to edit Hex like with the text?
Eh, sure. Why not? Kaizo hacking doesn't seem too ha-aaaaaaand I broke the ROM.

As for editing the midway entrances (where you restart after dying) themselves, you can either download the Entrance/Midway editors and be limited to a certain number of total midway entrances, or apply a patch to allow 4 checkpoints in every level that requires hex-editing some of the actual entrances. (See "How can I edit level/midway entrances?" in the FAQ.)

...i'm so stupid...I can't believe for once I didn't check first...oh well...

They're both normal sprites. Middle Rings are sprite 4F, goal rings are sprite D (and the goal platform and Yoshi's House are objects).

Thanks for all the help! Now I can finally finish the first level! By the way, i'm using the tool, i'd rather be more limited (I probally won't use many checkpoints, as my levels are kind of short anyway) than edit even more with hex. Hex editing is a pain in the...better stop right there...

EDIT: Dang...now I have everything in the level working...EXCEPT the Goal! When Yoshi goes through the goal, he tosses Baby Mario to the ground, he bubbles and the game freezes. Adding the "Yoshi at Goal doesn't seem to help at all! How do you get level exits to work?

Make sure the goal platform extends a certain distance after the goal ring sprite... Not sure exactly how many tiles (maybe Yoshis Fan knows?), but 32 (decimal) tiles should be more than enough.

By the way, the Yoshi at goal sprite isn't needed. (There are plenty of sprites in the sprite list that are mostly-useless to place manually, but are created automatically during other portions of the game.)

(Also, midway entrance hex-editing is actually faster than using the tool once you learn how (at least in my opinion). I understand that a lot of people would prefer to avoid unnecessary hex-editing, though.)

Once again, thanks that worked! My level 1 is almost done now, so I probally will be able to update soon! Sorry for all the questions, YI hacking is just a bit harder to learn than SMW hacking, because you have to learn hex editing (but its more fun, considering you have a lot more level space...)...so yeah...thats all I have to say for now.

I don't really want to listen to the A/An bullshit again this time around, and I'm sure nobody else does either. Therefore, let's pick a name for the hack from the following:

"SMWCP 2/II"
"The Second SMWCP"
"Another SMWCP"
"SMWCP²" (squared)
"The Production Line"

...or suggest something else.

Lets call it "ADarkBonesIsSuperAwesomeProduction". Nah I'm kidding, I vote for "SMWCP²" or, if you're open up for suggestions: "ADarkBonesIsSuperAwesomeProduction" SMWCP 2x2 (Like the beta name for SM64DS:SM64x4)

Vanilla to me means that you can't have hardly any fun in hacking. Why do I say that you ask? Because:

You can't use any ExGFX

You can't use any custom blocks.

You can't use any custom sprites.

You can't use any custom music.

You can't use any edited graphics.

You can't use patches.

You can't hex edit to fix glitches etc.

It's harder to fight off Cutoffness Man.

People will criticize you just for the fact that the hack is Vanilla. (Sadly, I am one of those people, I just can't stand vanilla, sorry...)

You can't use anything custom (wait...didn't I already say that...)

People will call you lazy for not using any ASM etc.

YOU CAN'T USE ANYTHING CUSTOM! (Yeah...I'm running out of reasons...)

You can't use anything custom. (replace the term "custom" with "that I would like to use"...)

That's all the reasons I can think of. Oh wait...did I already say:

Hi, DarkBones here, and I need advice. I'm not really getting much support for my SMW hack (This one in case you care...), and I'm considering finishing a short demo, submitting it to the mods, and starting a side project while its being moderated. What do you think?
Eh, sure. Why not? Kaizo hacking doesn't seem too ha-aaaaaaand I broke the ROM.
Wow! I'm offically on the list! Doesn't that feel good! I would have liked to be on both lists, but since I use a lot of savestates (and Cutoffness Man is my sworn enemy...), i'm probally better of as bug tester anyways...

Huh, never put two and two together, it just feels like a complete hack as is, minus the fact that it ends at cutoff keep...

You shouldnt get down just because you dont get enough support. It happens to all of us and that part of the hacking process (i think)

Start a side project if you want but i suggest you keep up with your current one, who knows, people might like it.

Thanks for your opinion, and you're probally right. I should probally keep working on my main hack before starting more side projects.

Well, I see things are hopping along quite nicely here! Thought I would pop in and check on things. I see you lost alittle hope there for a minute with little support. But things seemed to have sorted out for you. I really hope this hack works out, It was quite fun to test. Here's to a good hack!

Wow thanks! It must be pretty obvious that a larger member of SMWC commenting on your VERY FIRST HACK makes someone feel special. Although, I may start requesting the Mario Graphics from games, because thats my absolute LEAST favorite part to make/test. Other than that, I'm pretty close to Demo 2, as soon as I can think of a good way to use the n00b boss for Wart.

My first (and only) SMW hack (in progress) would probally be full chocolate so far, everything is edited but the status bar. Yeah...NOT a good place to start unless you know what you're doing (and I barely do...)

Well, to get back on topic, Vanilla hacks are (in my opinion) probally harder to make than Chocolate, but if you ask someone who likes making them, you'll probally hear the opposite...

I think its more a case of you slipping under the radar a little bit combined with the fact that you haven't posted any screenshots in a while. Its a lot easier for a person to comment on pictures than simple text.

But I do think you're probably one of the most promising newcomers on this site now and I do look forward to your demo. I watched your videos last night and in general, they were good and conveyed the feelings of the games you were trying to invoke - Mario 1 & Mario 2. The two biggest gripes I had with your levels weren't too huge. First, the levels were pretty flat and lacked decorations. I know the actual games didn't have much in the way of hills but they compensated with other obstacles and they did have more decorations. For example, you can put in those oval clouds in your 'black' Mario 2 areas.

I also felt like the levels were a little short in my opinion. Its your call if you want to lengthen them. Oh and there was a blatant Mario1 1-2 edit in there. Highly discouraged in this community.

Anyway, promising hack so far. As I said, I await the demo.

Thanks for the comment, I didn't know the dark areas had clouds. Better go watch a vid to make sure. Thanks for the comment, and glad to see people are actually still waiting for this. Well, the main reason that the levels aren't that long, is that it gets kind of hard to come up with good gimmicks. If and when I get to the SMB3 style levels, while gimmicks will be easier, it will be harder to get the feel, because, lets face it, not even NINTENDO THEMSELVES were able to make an equivalent to SMB3...

Stupid upcoming compatibility rules! Now I have to learn a hard AddMusic instead of Romi's. (Well, maybe if i'm lucky, my hack will still work in BSNES...) By the way, nice tutorial.
