To make a basic vertical level, click on the Mario's head icon (change properties in header) and change the level mode to 0A. There are other vertical level types so remember to experiment. Also, you can change things like vertical scroll, music and time limits here also.

EDIT: For some reason this music port won't work. Could someone please tell me whats wrong, or at least give me a working txt file: EDIT2: Nevermind, it just had something to do with some $#@! header being there that shouldn't have been. Once I manually removed it, it worked. Probally something to do with that aggrivating new AddMusic...
Eh, sure. Why not? Kaizo hacking doesn't seem too ha-aaaaaaand I broke the ROM.
Did you remember to extract and reinsert the normal graphics first? If you don't the graphics will be garbled and sometimes the ROM will freeze.

Thats usually happens with graphics. Just use the paint bucket to change it to the original palette's colors, or edit the palette in the game.

Did you remember to insert the map16 pages? If not, copy and paste the Map16 files included with your ExGFX files into the same folder as your hack. Then, open the Map16 editor of Lunar Magic and press F3. Then, remember to press F9 to save.

Also, did you remember to read the original file names of the ExGFX? If you inserted it as a different number, for some reason, it WON'T WORK (at least, not for me...)

It could also be that you don't even have the ExGFX set to be used in that level! You'd be surprised how common a mistake that is.

By 'the', which one are you referring to? There's one that works on the sprite layer, one which could work on layer 3 and another that could work by teleporting you to another level. All of these would probably require knowledge of DMA and VRAM. If you want to use the sprite layer one made by Bio and I, then the readme briefly explains how to use it. Also, a couple of months ago I started to work on a GUI for that to make it easier to use. It does little, but it's unfinished and I haven't been working on it for a long time.

Yes, I mean that one.

@ camoslash, actually, there is one. Let me just find the one that helped me.
EDIT: Found it: Click me! Why the easier to understand tutorial was in the trash can, I have no clue...

If anyone wants to play NES/SNES games with me (especially Mario or Kirby games), just PM me. I'll play as long as its nothing violent. I don't know much about Sega games, but I kind of like Sonic, so i'll play those too.

Are you using HFD's addmusic? It does require the header to be there and a script was passed through most (if not all) songs in the music section to use one. So if you aren't using it, then you're going to have to ensure that any song you download has no header.

...yeah, the quotes say it all...but I'm using Romi's AddMusic, because I don't want to sit and learn a new Addmusic just so people can run a hack in BSNES/on a real SNES, especially since I can't even get BSNES to work. I have no way of telling if I inserted it right, but I don't use songs with echos, so I should be okay, right? ...uh, right???

Closest thing i've ever made to a Vanilla level: Link. Now, time to scare you, you know how I can't stand it unless my levels look drasticaly different from SMW? Well, I ACTUALLY HAD FUN MAKING THIS LEVEL THAT HAS COMPLETLY VANILLA GRAPHICS! BOO! SCARY THINGS! EDUCATIONAL MARIO GAMES! ...okay, thats quite enough...

To be fair though at least there's no cut-offs.

I have to disagree there; the roof of the first part lacks corner tiles(and he used the walk-through ledge thingies for the outside corners as well). I didn't see anything else, but then again I didn't watch the whole video. To be honest, the level was quite boring to watch.

Spud - Very nice looking palettes. I like the heavy use of slopes - it makes the level look cave-ish and everything. Great work, the BG could use a tad less saturation, but that might just be me. It's a shame you lost motivation, the hack would certainly be super awesome. :(

Sorry, I guess I need to spice it up a little...but the cutoff issue was fixed a while ago...any suggestions for the design?

I just want to know if this level is good so far.

Edit: Level's almost done! Link
So, what do you think? Am I doing better?

Edit2: The level's done. Should I post a vid?

I have a quick question, is it possible to change the auto-scroll speed mid-level? I wanted to have the auto-scroll go to slow mode for one screen to allow more time for collecting a Yoshi coin, and then speed back up to medium.

Hello, I keep getting this error: ERROR:80 Musical interval is too low. None of the octaves are below the minimum octave limit, and there are not any tracks with more than one note at one time. For those of you who like big walls of text, here's the file:

DarkBones Edit: Just to clarify, I'm raising the octaves.

Aside from that, the level looks fine. I see no technical problems, although it could be better if you would avoid using cement blocks.

It's up to you, really :P

Thanks for helping me find those Graphics to Exanimate! ...now I just need to learn HOW to get ExAnimation to work... Is there anything that you could suggest thats better than cement blocks? Or should I just come up with a creative graphics change?

Edit: I learned! Link

Am I using the waterfalls right? Please tell me about cutoff.

@Masashi27 No, no, no...I'm trying to raise the octaves. Would that code work for raising them to the correct octave?

@Yoshicookiezeus *facepalm* I'm such an idiot...I didn't even think to use the file bin...

And about ExAnimation, don't you remember this post (more specifically, the tutorial you just commented on)?

Actually, yes. Thats the tutorial I looked over again. I found out why it wasn't working for me. Its because I tried to put the frames on the ExGFX file. You have to do it on on of the FG/BG slots. Once I figured that out, it was easy. Also, thanks for telling me about the sprite thing. Its possible at current speed, but its just pretty hard, and its not worth slowing the whole level down for one coin...

Edit: I edited that part to make it more fair.

In case you haven't you may want to use Slogger to find some freespace. Link
Just drag your ROM over the Slogger exe file and it will generate a text file. Open up the text file, and pick a LoRom adress for your freespace. You can either figure out the bytes needed with math I have no clue how to do, or you can do what I do, and just pick a spot with 8000 free bytes...

Update: New OW:

----------------------------------------------------------

Just a mini hack that I'm making to practice my hacking skills, I need to get better for BTM. The storyline starts with Bowser firing two hammer brothers for "being a bad influence for his children" (Bowser Jr was laughing an evil laugh and Iggy had a hammer in his head, lets leave it at that...) However, Bowser's other minions don't like the treatment they get, and they especially don't like it when someone gets fired when Bowser feels like it, so they all quit. Bowser, not knowing what to do, takes his kids to help him kidnap Peach. Meanwhile, Bowser's old minions decide to show Bowser how much he needs them by his side, so they come up with their own plan to get rid of Mario. They make <spoiler alert> their leader, and send Mario a letter, telling him to come save some princess they made up from some Bowser ripoff they made up. When Mario gets the letter, he heads off a few kingdoms over, not knowing what happened. I'm planning on making this a 1-2 world mini-hack, and before my favorite mod (YCZ) says I need some screenshots, heres at least one. Link. Yes, I'm using the level I made from the screenshot thread. Its one less level I have to make, and it fits the theme of the overworld I'm working on (oh joy...now I have to get good at making those...) Expect an early snapshot of that in, err... I dunno, around 30 minutes or so.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DIDN'T READ THAT AND THINK I HAVE NO SCREENSHOTS, THE LINK GOES TO ONE! I DIDN'T WANT TO STRETCH OUT THE PAGE!

Edit: Just to be safe here's a pic of the beta title screen. I'm planning on maybe making custom SMW style letters.

EDIT 3: Here's one of the hub levels in progress, the shipwreck. The main purpose of this level at this point is a free Yoshi, and to play with the tides

Offtopic:
Well, I don't know if it is or not, but it scared my pants of when I was just messing with Lunar Magic for the first time, and I forgot to make a backup...

Glad you got your problem solved, have a great time SMW hacking!

Did you remember not to make a new file? You have to copy a standard GFX file, paste it somewhere, then edit that file. Otherwise LM will say it's too big, and it won't work. If you didn't, make sure not to use GFX files 32 or 33 as a base, those are WAY too big...

Thanks for the tutorial, it really helped. I inserted the looped wave on its own without putting it through the snesbrr or whatever, and it worked!
