Hi everyone, and welcome to Super Famicompo! This is a new spin on a SNES music competition, following a similar format to Famicompo with some familiarites still to people used to SMWC Idol. This compo is intended to be open to anyone, but also to, in a sense, serve as a bridge between communities. The contest will primarily be hosted here, though, with prizes and trophies provided by SMWC.

The Premise

Super Famicompo is a ONE-ROUND competition. Don't worry, though - it's not as limiting as it sounds, for those used to Idol. The competition is split into THREE (3) categories, each of which can be entered as many times as you want. These categories will be detailed further below. You will submit your entries directly to me, and come voting time I will do up a simple webpage to display the entries. How voting will work is currently not firmly decided, but I will provide an update closer to the deadline when it has been determined.

The Categories

Cover
This category is for anything in the realm of covers. Covers of game music, non-game music, whatever you want, as long as it is a cover of something.

Original
This category is for original songs of any kind. Anything goes as long as it's original work.

Challenge
This category is for covers OR originals under the following restrictions:
- The song must use at least 3 samples from this pack, 2 samples from this pack and 1 sample from this pack. You can use any other additional samples as desired.

The Rules

- All content must be made for this competition. You're free to finish up an unreleased old song or whatever, but if material has been previously released in any form, it may not be submitted. It follows, of course, that you may not upload somebody else's work (excluding collabs - see below).
- You may collaborate with up to two others on any given submission. If you choose to do so, tell me as such when you submit.
- You may use any tool that generates SPC/SFC output, as long as it is not an automatic conversion tool (in the case of covers). This means no SPC2MML, nintspc, etc. Examples of tools that are allowed are AddmusicK, SNESGSS, SNESMOD, XMSNES, and so on.

Submission

You will submit any entries via PM on SMWCentral (this account), by DM on Discord (sincx#9611), or by email to s3x5samps youknowwhat gmail.com. All that is required in your submission is either an SPC file or SFC file (either an audio file or a ROM file). If you choose to submit SFC, there is a size limit of 256KB, and it MUST be your own content, that is, it must not contain any copyrighted material - no Super Mario World ROMs or anything like that. You must also tell me which category you are submitting to, and if it's a cover, you must include the name of the original song and game (if applicable).

Prizes

I don't have a ton to offer in the way of prizes. However, SMWCentral has some Steam game codes to offer, one of which will be given to the winner of each category. There will also be SMWCentral trophies available to the top 3 in each category, for those who have an account there at the time of results (if not, tough luck - I'm saying it here right now so I don't get any complaints, if you don't make an account before the results are out you will not get a trophy). Note that if your account is brown-banned on SMWCentral, you will not be eligible for SMWCentral-distributed prizes (but you can still enter).

With all that said - it's time for everyone to get SNES'ing! The deadline for submissions is July 14th 21st at 23:59:59 Atlantic Time (approximately 8PM Pacific, 11PM Eastern). Feel free to discuss things in this thread, or join the Discord server at https://discord.gg/7nFvMXw. Have fun!
Yes, decoding and re-encoding is fine. The sample itself being intact is more important than the details of the BRR file.

sharing answers with anyone is a big nope - obviously we cant really watch over anything going on in private msg's, but if anyone were to be caught doing that somehow they would be subject to DQ.

also yes!! even if you only know a few it is worth entering! i guarantee you're not the only one who doesn't know many of them, and the more participants the merrier!

We wanted to make a quick clarification regarding the IMPOSTOR song, since we've realized a slight flaw in our system that is a bit unfair to you all in this circumstance. The IMPOSTOR song is not game-related in any way - not from a game, not on a game console, and so forth - it is a song released outside of any gaming context. If this clarification affects answers that you have already submitted, feel free to resubmit your guesses with the necessary changes (you don't need to resubmit all your guesses, just any that are changed/new).

Apologies for any confusion/inconvenience!

we gave every [regular] song a difficulty ranking between 1-5 (which will be revealed at results time), and the average difficulty is around 3.1 - so, at least by our judgement, the answer is "yeah its probably pretty hard-ish maybe" ((((but we're obviously biased,))))

wrong note @ 2:46 in diving - but otherwise major kudos on this port, i know how much effort doing ports from waterworld takes and this is no exception, especially being the longest of them all! giving me some motivation to do mission 3 which ive wanted to do for forever,,

not much time left, everyone! (reminder that it ends on the 14th!) if ppl really need it i might consider extending the submission period by 1 week but dont count on it for now!

A one-week extension has been granted based on a poll I did in the Discord server - so the new deadline for submissions is July 21st, same time. Use this time wisely!

For a less intensive version of the results (plaintext/no embeds), see here.

Note that the YouTube embeds may take some time to all load - they aren't broken, just slow!

It’s finally time for the moment many of you have been waiting for! Whether it’s to jump in and discover a brand new OST tied to a song that you liked, or ragefully scream once you realize what that song at the tip of your tongue was, we’ve got your results here! Take a look!

And now it's time to announce the winners!

The Results:

In 3rd place, we have:
K.T.B. with 73 points!

Coming in 2nd is:
Blue Leaf with 81 points!

And the overall winner, by an absolute landslide, is:
SomeGuy712x with 98 points!

SomeGuy712x
, send a PM to FPzero to collect your Steam code!

Here are the full results, where x^ is a series guess (1 point), x is a full guess (2 points), and x** indicates a full guess plus being the only one to guess that song correctly (2 + 1 = 3 points). For the HQ rips section, the j{} set at the end indicates which jokes were guessed correctly, if any (1 point each). Recall that Extreme songs are worth 2 extra points for a correct guess (so 1 point for series, 4 points for full, 5 points for only guesser).

On our end, it’s been fun hosting this contest, seeing whether our guesses about your guesses were correct, and especially if you’d fall into some of our devilish traps. We’ve taken note of a few flaws in our system this time around that we’ll try to address better in the future, but we hope you still had fun. If you notice any errors in the results, please let one of us know right away - there was a lot to keep track of so it’s not unlikely we missed a couple things, even though we tried our best to keep things organized. Thank you for participating, and see you next time!
E10 was just a dumb joke to get people a bit confused and/or talking about it - we had no intention of it being guessable, we just wanted to have a bit of fun playing with ppls heads a bit

note that while submissions end tonight, voting will not commence until sometime tomorrow. just a heads-up!

--------------------
soundcloud / bandcamp / twitter / battle of the bits / buy our album
It's time for voting! Voting will take place as follows:
  • All entries are posted anonymously here, in a randomized order.
  • You will give each entry a score out of 10. Fractional values are permitted (e.g. 3.5, 7.78). You don't have to score all the entries, and you can also update your scores at any time. You may not give a score for your own entries - if you do, they will be ignored. You're free to leave comments on them though!
  • Votes will be submitted using this Google Form. Since entrants are allowed to vote, votes will not be public until results time. Note that you will need a Google Account to fill in the form - I'm not collecting any data about your account, but it's necessary to ensure fair voting and make updating your votes as straightforward as possible.

Once the voting period has ended, the final scores will be calculated based on a distribution-adjusted average - this simply prevents people gaining an advantage by voting everything very low. On a similar note, if your votes are deemed to be extremely unfair and/or trolly, your votes will not be counted. These scores and all votes and comments will be posted in a nicely formatted webpage (hopefully!) at results time.

With all that said:
Here are the entries!

All entries' file names are anonymized, however tags are mostly intact.
For the Cover category, tags were mostly left untouched, unless there were missing/no game/title tags, in which case I simply added the game/title as applicable. I also removed any SNESMOD leftover garbage tags.
For Originals, all tags except the song title were removed. If there was no title tag, I added one based on the name provided.
For Challenges, tags were again mostly left intact, except comments were removed, and the game field was either replaced with or appended with SFC/Super Famicompo Challenges.
The date field has also been cleared on all entries.

Voting will be open for approximately 2 weeks, until August 4th at 23:59:59 UTC (17:00 Pacific, 20:00 Eastern)! Happy listening! If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or in the Discord!
Added a note regarding voting on your own entries (see voting bullet #2).

Big apologies for the delay on this but I didn't want to rush things and release something super half-assed and disappointing.

Without further ado!

THE RESULTS
Less resource-intensive version (default on mobile)

You can download any song by clicking on its name. Don't forget you can also still get the full pack of entries here!

Congratulations to all the top competitors! The cover category had some fierce competition, and the original category and challenge category put out some interesting songs as well!

If you're wondering how scoring worked, I'm not gonna go into huge detail, but I'll give a brief explanation that should dwell any confusion. The scores are based on a normal distribution. What this means is, an entry's score is based on how well it was received compared to all of the other entries. This is reflected by the Adjusted Score field in the vote listings (out of 100 points) - a higher score means that voter voted that song highly compared to the rest of the songs, and vice versa. With this in mind, the overall score is not an absolute measure of the quality of the song, but rather an indication of how well it fared against its competitors - so a low score does not necessarily mean your song was bad! For absolute scoring you can look at the scores each voter gave.

Prizes and trophies should be distibuted in due time. Congrats again to everyone, and I hope to see you all again next time!
Oh, yes! You can click on the entry name (eg. Cover0xx, Orig0xx, Chall0xx) to download it, I forgot to mention that!

(ofc, there's the full pack of entries from voting as well, here)
