Hiya.

The level design doesn't look too creative or spectacular though: just some randomly placed Koopa's and Goomba's.

It's the beginning of the level, so obviously the intention is that it will pick up later.

Like GVS said, the palettes and background look well done. However, right now it looks like a slightly altered version of SMB 1-1. Try to make your levels more creative by varying the terrain and making levels less linear.

Thank you, I will.

Now if your screenshot is only meant to show us your graphics, that is fine. But if you want to show us your level, that screenshot will not tell us much.

I'm aware, I'm just a tease. Thanks.

@Gregor: looks fine, but, erm, don't you have anything to say about this?

No, not really.
Eh. While it looks nice, it seems you're focusing more on the aesthetics of the level than the actual design of it.

It's also pretty clustered, making it a bit harder on the eyes for the player than it should be. It's not really something most people notice but being a bit more sparse with your decorations goes a long way, making your level subconsciously easier to read.
About a million years ago, I once had the idea of trying to make a Sonic game in Super Mario World's engine. I did not get far, mostly because I lacked a lot of resources that are available now.

It seems you are not making using of them, either. That makes me sad.

But on a more related note, I've seen refrigerator drawings that look more appealing than the shots you've posted. The bad palettes in combination with primitive, repetitive graphics make me wonder if I'm looking at the same screenshots you are.

Just to say! The BG of the special stage is equal to the chaos emeralds!

So... What exactly does that change? It still looks like I'm staring into the Garden of Madness.

Ripped every green tile from SMB3. Will use it for something.
oh lawd

I am a horrible person
It's a Commie Nazi terrorist soldier. So yes.

Also changed this.

How do I make coins stop spawning when I fireball sprites? I tried out the classic fireball patch but it doesn't seem to work.

Which of the two you tried (note that there are two of them)? And also, have you set the freespace for one of them?

I'm an idiot. No, I assumed that if it worked on one ROM, it would work on another without modifications. The only problem now is that coins still spawn

EDIT: Naw, I fixed things, just had to restart from scratch.

WHO'S GOING TO WIN? AMERICA, THAT'S WHO!
The spots in the dirt could be brighter. They're hard to make out.

I do like the contrast between the foreground and the background.
LISTEN UP, YOU ROTTEN MAGGOT! OBAMA HAS BEEN CAPTURED BY COMMIE NAZI TERRORISTS AND TAKEN TO THEIR TOP SECRET ISLAND! WE NEED A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO GO SAVE HIM! YOU'RE THE NEXT BEST GODDAMN THING, SO SHOW THOSE DAMN FOREIGNERS SOME AMERICAN HOSPITALITY! THAT'S AN ORDER!

AND REMEMBER: AMERICA ALWAYS WINS!
lmao

I take it you're not a fan of Gligar13.

I made two levels. Not a lot, but I tried out something else in the meantime, found out it didn't work out for me and returned to this.

I wanted to have something done for E3 C3, but the little I have right now is kinda short for a demo and I don't want to rush anything. So there you go.
