Hey, thanks a bunch Ersanomnom! Funny how some things just stick to mind like that regardless of circumstances! Sorry one of those things had to be something as silly as my very own birthday, ahah. >:3

It's been a coolio 'nuff day, ample amount of interesting presents - can't ask for more. 'till next time! \o\
オンバット~ ♥

It's over! Check results here.

A new month is here, and a new bout of the VGM guessing contest comes along with it – and an extra juicy portion at that. Let’s get this show on the road!

Rules

All you have to do is listen through the numerous 33-second tracks linked to down below, and write down which game or franchise each track you recognize belongs to. Do mind that while there may be melodies that are featured in multiple games, only the games that feature the exact arrangement sampled will give points.
The answers are to be sent to me by PM. You may revise or add on to your answers as many times as you need by sending me another PM as long as the deadline has not been reached.

The deadline is November 23rd, 8:00 PM (CET).

Guessing the correct game will give 1 point.
If you are the only person to guess a particular track correctly, you get an extra ½ point.
Guessing the correct franchise/game series (or a different game in the same series) will give ¼ point.
Wrong guesses give no penalties.

Please refrain from conferring with other people to discuss answers and the likes before the contest has ended. Searching on your own is fine, as is boasting about how much/little you have recognized already. Posting explicit hints/answers in the thread or elsewhere in the forums is prohibited.

In the case of any ties, they will be resolved by ordering the tied parties by their ratios of correct game answers versus correct franchise answers. If users still remain tied, the people who sent their final answers/addendums in the earliest will be favored.

Prizes

1st place

$50

2nd place

$30

3rd place

$10

4th – 5th place

$5

Prizewinners may decide whether to receive their winnings through PayPal (fees covered by me) or to be gifted a selection of games on Steam with roughly the same value sum (rounded upwards). Other options are negotiable.

Prizewinners will be contacted by PM when the contest has ended in order to discuss the details. If for any reason they fail to respond by December 23rd, their prize is effectively voided.

Music list

There’s a whopping 120 tracks in the selection this time around. The only thing that connects them all is that I have either personally played the games they appear in or watched someone else play them. The difficulty ranges from very obvious to being obscure to the degree I would be very surprised if anyone gets them right.

Download them all as a .zip, .7z, .rar, .ace, .dmg, or listen to them through a simple online playlist here or as a YT-video here.
Be forewarned that the loudness of the tracks may vary considerably from one to another. Some tracks may also suffer from poor audio quality, but they should still be recognizable.

As there is a large amount of tracks this time around, you may want to simply jump from one track to the next at first, judging from the first couple of seconds whether it rings a bell. Of course, if you would prefer to listen to the slightly-longer-than-an-hour ensemble back-to-back, be my guest.

Feel free to ask questions and whatnot; I will try my best to answer them. Best of luck!

Everyone may choose whichever method of conveying their answers to me as they please - as long as it is clearly legible. Whether in plain text or formatted in a table right in the PM or an external readable file is linked to in the PM does not matter. Just make sure to notify me if there are any changes/updates to the answers, whichever method you use.

It goes without saying that the file bin should not be used for uploading answers in this instance, since anyone can go through those.

Six people have submitted answers so far, and 24 hours have not even passed yet. Good going, people!
If I were handing out bonus points based on how much the individual "answers" made me laugh in some cases, I think we would already have our likely winners... but that is not the way this contest works, ahah. Thanks for the guffaws; you guys know who you are.

Anyhow, I amended the quarter-point rule a bit - if you make an incorrect guess, but the game you guessed exists in the same game series at least (and/or the characters therewithin make an appearance in the correct game), then it'll count as a quarter-pointer.
Guessing what genres and which systems earn no points, but there's no stopping you from guessing however detailed or barebones-y you like. More fun for me, heck yeah!

There is nothing stopping you if you would like to try submitting what answers you have, it is quite welcome. Who knows, you might be surprised where you would place in the results.
...I mean, the chance of getting last place is always there, but even then one could rest assured that someone who did not submit their answers probably could have done worse. I encourage it!

Also, I know #70, but I looked for it all over the Internet and can't find the name of the game, but I know what the game was about so I don't know if that would count as any credit if I get it correct.

I am sorry, but the only answers I will give points for is either the correct game title, the correct game franchise/series... or a different game in the same series. Anything more vague than that will not be accepted.
If you know what the game is about, then maybe you can name a prominent character as your answer? Such might count for something.

In other news, 72 tracks have not had any 1-point guesses so far, and 26 tracks have only been guessed by one person each. This is sure to change up as soon as more answers tick in, but... nifty!

Ah, doesn't the "simple online playlist" option work for you? I can listen to them fine with Safari on my iPod touch, and with the default browser on my Android smartphone... which is a surprise, really - I had not tested this beforehand. #ab{¬_¬}

I could probably try making another alternative method of listening to them, depends on whether or not the demand persists. Let me know!

Oh... that sort of 'mobile'. Welp, I will try to work something out either this evening or tomorrow. All tracks in one video, I suppose? ...'cuz yeah, I won't even try to create 120 individual videos and link each one, my apologies. #ab{<_<}
It won't be elegant or anything, but I could try just showing track number while each track plays or something.

I'm not sure how much that helps with file size in this case (not much from my findings), but sure - I added a few alternate download links for various archive types because why not. ...some less conventional than others. :)

Also, can we get a WAV and FLAC version of all 120 songs in one file, for listening on the go? :O

Uhh well, I am going to have to decline on this one... If someone downloads the tracks one way or the other in the first place, they can just as "easily" as me myself create a single-file mish-mash out of all the tracks combined in whatever format they desire. It sounds like it would be some clunky business in the end either way. My apologies. :(

I have added a link to the video I made in the opening post. I made it fade the track numbers in and out as they play. I really hope it is acceptable, 'cuz honestly - it was sort of an undertaking to throw together... #ab{O.O}

No. ...that's all I can say. #ab{:[}

2. What are the source of the MP3's?

For most of them I found ripped soundtracks to edit, but for the more difficult-to-find tracks I had to resort to converting audio from YT-videos or similar. I figured that as long as it is distinctly recognizable, it is good enough. The clips are to be used for mere identification, not for the sheer listening pleasure per se... #ab{:P}

Anyhow, some stats. There are now 10 people who have sent in answers.
59 tracks remain not guessed by anyone (hey, that makes just over half the total discovered!), 24 tracks have only been guessed by one person each.
A couple of the tracks I would not have believed anyone to get have been covered as well... surprising, but there are still way more obscure/weird stuff left in the mix... as well as some I am frankly surprised nobody has gotten yet. Great job so far; keep 'em coming!

Since I check every PM sent to me and update the answers in my own system each time, it is actually preferable if you only tell me what answers you would like to change or are new. Or you can give me the complete list; it depends on what is easiest for you.

And so, a week + a bit less than half a day remains. Time for some pointless statistics again; probably the last before the deadline is here.
18 individual people have sent in their answers so far. Nice turnout! It's not too late to participate or change your answers, so if anyone wants to do another once-over, there's still plenty of time. I encourage sending in your answers even if you don't think you have many correct ones. You might just make an impact on the rankings by guessing something only one other person (or nobody!) has guessed so far, after all.
Speaking of, there are 25 tracks that only one person have guessed correctly, and 43 tracks remain unguessed by anyone (not counting franchise guesses). It is good to see at least half of 'em got identified. There are some of these I am very surprised any of you got right, and yet there are still some I feel the opposite about - how come nobody has guessed them already, hey? #ab{:P}

Good luck to all guessers, current and potential newcomers alike. \o

Just a final reminder that the deadline is approaching - a day and 5 hours ~15 minutes as I'm writing this.
If anyone wants to join in at the final moments or update their answers, the time is now! I'd love an excuse to fill in the results spreadsheet with more columns, circles and squares, though I'll say I'm already really happy with the turnout 'n interest so far. #ab{O_O}

To see where all the tracks came from, who guessed what, how many guessed which ones and so on... see here! Or download an Excel-file (with kinda better formatting) here. There's even menial commentary if you hover over the track numbers, but that ain't worth it.

Now, I am only human, so if anyone's like "hey I guessed that, why didn't you give me the points" or the likes - feel free to complain at me through PMs or what-have-you, and I'll try updating stuff. Pretty sure the prize-giving positions are carved in stone though, good job to y'all!
I will be PM'ing the winners by the end of the day, thanks once again to everybody for their time and effort spent scouring soundtracks and the likes for this. #smw{:TUP:}

They most certainly were! I kept getting answers swapping those two answers around, but I think I gave correct rulings taking that into consideration. If I'm wrong, someone should give me a holler or something.

I stand my ground on that guessing "Mappy" for #95 is only worth a quarter of a point, on the basis that the music presented here should be their own pieces and not compilations or multiple bits strung together - it is its own standalone track in Taiko No Tatsujin Wii 2 (Do Don to Nidaime)'s song list, so ayup!
It probably would not have made much of a difference ranking-wise either way... #ab{¬_¬}

The month of May is soundly here, and here goes thus another bout of the VGM guessing contest comes along with it. It's a bit of a step down from my previous one in multiple ways, but please bear with me. Let’s get this party started!

Rules

All you have to do is listen through the numerous 33-second tracks linked to down below, and write down which game or franchise each track you recognize belongs to. Prizes

3rd place

Prizewinners may decide whether to receive their winnings through PayPal or another form to be agreed upon post-contest.

Prizewinners will be contacted by PM when the contest has ended in order to discuss the details. If for any reason they fail to respond by June 23rd, their prize is effectively voided.

Music list

There’s a meager 50 tracks in the selection this time around. There is no real common theme at work here. The difficulty level is not that high this time, so I'm expecting to see a fair share of ties. If you know some of the somewhat more obscure ones, you might have an edge here!

Download them all as a .zip, .7z, or listen to them through a simple online playlist here.
Be forewarned that the loudness of the tracks may vary considerably from one to another. Some tracks may also suffer from poor audio quality, but they should still be recognizable.

You may want to simply jump from one track to the next at first, judging from the first couple of seconds whether it rings a bell. Of course, if you would prefer to listen to the 27 ½-minute ensemble back-to-back, be my guest.

Feel free to ask questions and whatnot; I will try my best to answer them. Best of luck!

Huh, are you sure? I ranked 7th in your last contest but don't even feel like bothering with this one. I could just be completely out of touch here, but a heads-up for you nonetheless.

Well indeed, levels of difficulty in this sort of thing is a bit finicky to even try to make a statement about... either one knows the tracks, or one doesn't. If someone hasn't ever heard the SMB theme before (somehow...), its inclusion in an event like this makes it impossible-tier already. It's not 'easy' for -them-.
There's no particular "skill" involved in this type of thing to accurately measure a sense of difficulty, other than potentially being diverse in one's video game tastes perhaps helping some.
All I meant to indicate is that there are way fewer really obscure things this time, as... I kind of exhausted those options last time, heh.

Originally posted by AxemJinx
There have been times the version I had in my library sounded slightly different, and I wasn't sure whether that was because of audio quality, or because it was the wrong version. Personally, double-checking that kind of thing isn't something I enjoy in these contests. Again, just leaving this here as an FYI, and others might disagree.

A valid point! In the worst case scenarios there what difference it makes is 3/4 of a point in each case (or well, a whole point + 1/4 if it happens to be something nobody else gets).

Last time I included a handful of tracks with the explicit intent to beguile and lead listeners astray in that way (a cruel move, I know) - and got some pretty entertaining results in return. This time, I can "only" really think of two tracks that might mess someone up - but again, if they guess what I suppose they could misinterpret it as being from, at least they get a quarter of a point rather than nil. Hopefully it will not be too much of an issue; if they go and listen to what they THINK it is, they should realize it really isn't quite right (and thus should be able to sniff out the real deal quite easily). It's too late to change things up now, alas...

I'll keep it in mind if I get around to do another one of these down the road anyhow, thank you for your input!
オンバット~ ♥
I have received answers from three people already, thanks for your participation! \o\
A fairly even distribution of scores so far, but that's sure to change as single-guesser bonuses are broken and new ones are unearthed. It really still is anybody's game~

Originally posted by imamelia
I'm not participating because you didn't even look at the contest when I did it, you baka.

Oh I LOOKED/LISTENED alright, but let's just say I felt too demotivated by lack of certainly recognized tracks (not counting "I know this, where's it from argh) that I decided to stay low and reclusive as usual. After looking through the list when results were posted, I reckon I could have gotten 'round 6.5 points. Whoops.
Just 'cuz I try to crank out a lot of songs for my own gigs (this time excluded) doesn't necessarily mean I'm very well-acquainted with a wide variety of VG-music, it seems! It usually comes down to overlapping tastes in the end, shucks... ;w;

Originally posted by ergazoobi
Could you please fix this or at least indicate which tracks are bad rips?

Sure thing, I can at least make an earnest attempt! Most of these tracks I threw together into a collection in a hurry back in late 2015 so I'm not sure what sources I had to work with for most of them, but I listened through and attempted to find better sources for certain tracks I myself deemed a bit icky. This change is reflected both in the downloadable archives and the playlist thingy.
This concerns the following tracks: #002, #017, #023, #026, #027 and #040.

Also of note is that I've switched track #004 out with something else entirely, but still from the same game as the original track. The original had poor quality and wasn't in the better-sounding soundtrack I got for some reason, so there's that.

If there are other tracks that sound seriously bad/off, feel free to point them out to me and I will be happy to try to remedy the issue. My ears aren't as quality-sensitive as most's, unfortunately.
