I am very new to Super Mario World hacking and I want to make my own hack. Right now, I'm trying to make a test hack to learn how to hack that will problbly not be submitted here. I'm using lot's of tutorials and right now I'm trying to learn how to insert custom music into my ROM. I have Torchkas's "Donkey Kong Country 3 - Northern Kremisphere" music over the Super Mario World overworld. But it's not working right! I looked at numerous tutorials and I think I'm doing everything right, but apperently, I'm not. I was trying to figure this out for at least 3 hours on 9-26-2012 and I can't seem to get it right! I need help, preferably for this specific piece of music! So all of the steps that I took to get my result are below. Since I'm very new to hacking, I want to know specificly, in great detail, exactly what I should do and what I should change and define any new terms/words not in the steps below, preferably by experienced hackers who can help someone new out very well and that the new person would be able to understand everything that the helper is saying.

STEPS:

1. I went to the music section and downloaded, saved, and extracted "Donkey Kong Country 3 - Northern Kremisphere" music by "Torchkas". No, the music is not mine.

2. In the music's Read Me file, it says that if I'm using the music as an overworld, which I am, it says to change the 2B in the header to 68, so I did. I changed the 2B in the second line to 68 and hit file, then save.

3. Then, I went to the tools section and downloaded, saved, and extracted "HuFlungDu's Addmusic v4.05.02", since that's what the music calls for.

4. I then took a clean, unmodified, headered Super Mario World ROM SMC file and copied it and the 100% complete .SRM (SRAM, Save) file that I downloaded from this site into the Lunar Expand folder. Go to the tools section and download it, you need to expand your ROM to at least 2 Megabytes, but not 4 or more so I expanded my ROM to 3.

5. I then copied the second AddMusic405 (file name of "HuFlungDu's Addmusic v4.05.02") folder (it's the one where you open up the AddMusic405 folder from "Downloads" or wherever else you saved it, there's a second folder with the same name with all the stuff in it, I copied that one) to the Lunar Expand folder and I moved my ROM SMC file and the .SRM file to the AddMusic405 folder that I just copied.

6. I then copied the DKC3 - Northern Kremisphere .txt file (with the 2B changed into 68) from the music that I downloaded to the OW folder of the AddMusic405 in the Lunar Expand folder.

7. I then went to the start menu on the bottom-left corner of the screen, typed in "CMD" in the "Search programs and files" at the bottom of the window and copied the first item at the top, the CMD program, into the AddMusic405 folder in Lunar Expand folder.

8. I then copied the file name (not the file itself, right-click on the file, left-click rename, right-click on the file name, left-click copy) of the DKC3 - Northern Kremisphere .txt file OW folder, backed out and double-clicked on the AddMusic Configuration Settings file, pasted the copied text next to 0A under OVERWORLD with the .txt extension, then I clicked "file", then "Save".

9. I then renamed my ROM and .srm file to "SMW".

10. I then double-clicked on the copied CMD, typed in, "AddMusic.exe SMW.smc -se" and pushed Enter. I then typed in "AddMusic.exe SMW.smc", pushed Enter, then closed CMD.

11. I then went to Lunar Magic, opened my ROM, went to the overworld editor, clicked on the Note Block, selected the inserted DKC3 - Northern Kremisphere music on the right-side of the window with Overworld Map selected on the left side, and saved the overworld.

12. I then ran the ROM in my ZSNES v1.51 emulator and checked if the overworld music sounded glitchy to see if I'm doing everything right. It did and I immediately closed the emluator.

13. I then went to the tools section and downloaded, saved, and extracted "Sample Tool 2.0.0.5" by "smkdan".

14. I then copied the extracted SampleTool folder to the AddMusic405 folder in the Lunar Expand folder.

15. I then copied the DKC3 - Northern Kremisphere.bnk BANK file that came with the music into the SampleTool folder.

16. I then opened SampleTool, and went to "file", then "open", then my ROM. Those two "hack inserted" windows came up. I then clicked on "overworld" at the bottom of the SampleTool window, then "Import from file", then "DKC3 - Northern Kremisphere.bnk", then
I clicked "12" from the "Available" drop-down menu, made sure the overworld was at "12" and everything else at "11 (Default)" under the "Location" drop-down menu. I then clicked, "Save bank", then "file", then "save".

17. I then close Sample Tool, run the ROM in the ZSNES emulator, and the music doesn't work right. Watch the video at the top of the post.

So I need help. It doesn't matter if 2B or 68 is in the header of the "Northern Kremisphere" text file, I get the same results.

WOW, this tool is AWESOME!

I'm very new to hacking and this tool will help me out A LOT!

I once read a tutorial on basic ASM here. I didn't know ASM before I read that tutorial and there are still lots of things that I don't understand about ASM even after reading it. There was a section in that tutorial that tells you how to insert custom blocks into your ROM. So using previous knowlege from the tutorial, using ASM, I made a block that makes Mario big when he touches it, but it didn't play neither the animation nor the sound, it just made him big.

Using this tool, I was able to make a block that made Mario big and played the animation (though still no sound) EASILY!

I mean, think about the possibilities of this tool. No more endless RAM address hunting! No more endless tutorial readings on ASM just to make blocks!

This tool will GREATLY shorten our times to make blocks, and will make a lot more people able to make custom blocks, and a lot more blocks will be put in the blocks section for people to download for use in their hacks!

Oh, man! I'm so excited!

I love Pokémon and I have been waiting for the full version of this hack to get released ever since I played your "Super Pika Land Ultra: Vanilla Version" in August!

It's nice to see that this hack will be properly submitted to the site soon. Will it be in the hacks section by November 21?

Petit Computer is a DSiware application where you can make pretty much anything you want. It's a programming tool where you can use an adapted form of the BASIC programming language to write programs. You can make programs, games, stories, music, etc.

I want this thread to be a place where SMWCentral users can show off their programs and games made with this application and possibly provide QR codes for them as well as ask for help and ask questions about Petit Computer, since there are not really any good tutorials yet on the internet.

The first Super Mario World hack that I played was "Luigi and the Island of Mystery" by SuperWiiDude in late July of 2012. It's awesome and has a life system similar to Zelda, something that I really like about Super Mario World hacks.

This hack is very great. I got it on November 20, 2012, and I'm loving it. But, like you said, the hack isn't exactly finished yet. You're still playtesting the game.

I want to report some issues that I'm having playing the game.

O.K., I found some major problems with the Luigi course in the level "Switch Block Slam".

1.

Sometimes Luigi can clip through some blocks, going to some unintended places.
In the top image above, he jumped where he was supposed to, and, apperently, I hit the on/off switch while Luigi was inside of the red circled blocks, and he appeared above the level. His feet are above the item box. The only way out is to fall down the pit with the blue arrow or another one that you can find or touch the enemy if you haven't killed it.
In the bottom image, Luigi was running full speed, he jumped at the on/off switch in the red circle and clipped through the blocks and jumped into the area with the player. The only way out of this is to reset the game if you haven't beaten the level, or use Start and Select if you have.
There may also be some other places where he can clip through the blocks.

2.

Was the block with the red arrow pointing to intended. It wasn't there initially, but when Luigi was running full speed, he jumped at the corner between the on/off switch and the celing and the celing tile was replaced with an on/off switch.

3.

Also, if Luigi falls into this hole, then the only way out is to reset the game if you haven't beaten the level and you have killed all of the enemies in the area.

I've completed World 3 and everything before that as of this post. I'm currently at the third star trial, so if I find any more issues, I'll post them here.

I was looking through the patches section of this site and I found a patch, "[xkas] Reload Overworld" by worldpeace. Thinking that it migtht solve some of my problems above, I downloaded it. Since I didn't know how to apply patches, I went to the F.A.Q. section and looked it up. I downloaded the version of xkas that the F.A.Q. says. Then, I copy the ROM, the patch, and the Command Prompt into the xkas folder. I then open the command prompt and type in
Code
xkas.exe (my rom name).smc (the patch name).asm

and I press enter. Then I try to play the ROM in zSnes. The ROM won't play. The ROM header changes from "SUPER MARIOWORLD" to glitched symbols. This patch seemed to turn a perfectly working ROM into something that zSnes can hardly recognize at all. This even happens if I apply the patch to a clean rom.

What am I doing wrong? How do I properly apply patches to ROMs?

I've installed the patch successfully, and now those problems about going through exit paths are now fixed#ab{:)}.

But those problems about the audio slowing down are still present.

#smw{-_-;}I guess I'm going to have to wait until Torchkas finishes the overworld version of the music.

I'm very new to hacking and I'm trying to edit the overworld. Take a look at this picture.

I can't seem to get those two exit paths to work properly. I want to make an exit path to go from the big main overworld map to "Yoshi's Island", but whenever I go through the exit path while testing the game in zSnes, instead of going to "Yoshi's Island", I get sent back to the big main overworld map, swimming on land. I can then push left to go back to my "swim anywhere RPG overworld".

Why is this happening? I clicked on the exit path on the big main overworld map. Then, I clicked on the yellow star icon. Then, I clicked on the exit path on "Yoshi's Island". Then, I clicked on the yellow star again and put in the settings. Then, I clicked on the exit path on "Yoshi's Island". Then, I clicked on the yellow star icon. Then, I clicked on the exit path on the big main overworld map. Then, I clicked on the yellow star again and put in the settings.

But what do the coordinates mean? I'm talking about the "01D0,01D8" and the "FFF0,0058". Do those have anything to do with where the exit path will take me?

Yes, you seem to be right. I just looked at a tutorial. But if I change the "direction to enter from" on either of the exit paths, the indexes change. I can change the settings sucessfully and keep them when I click "O.K." for the exit path on the big main overworld map, but if I try to change the settings for the exit path on "Yoshi's Island" and click "O.K.", when I open the exit path tile settings again when the exit path on "Yoshi's Island" is highlited, the first two boxes change to "no setting" with the exit path on "Yoshi's Island" and the one on the big main overworld map doesn't change. This even happens when I try to link them with the yellow star icon.

I do not understand why it's reverting to "no setting" when I try to change it and it's really making me mad.

Wow! You're exactly right! It did work. I's hard to believe that there would be a bug in Lunar Magic. I guess that's why people release new versions of their software to fix those bugs.

I guess I'm not going to be putting any more exit paths on the left side of the submap area until the next version of Lunar Magic comes out. When is the next version of Lunar Magic going to be officially released, anyway?

How did Nintendo make the paths at the Forest of Illusion and Chocolate Island intersect, and how can I replicate it?

If you view the layer 1 Mario paths, there's no path between Forest of Illusion 4 and Forest of Illusion 2, there's also no path between Chocolate Island 3 and Chocolate Fortress, and there's also no path between Chocolate Island 2 and the pipe according to Lunar Magic, yet you can walk there in the game. Why?

There should also theoretically be paths connecting the star and Bowser's Castle (Front Door) and also connecting Donut Plains 1 and 2, but there none according to Lunar Magic, yet you can walk there in the game. Why?

After all of the trouble that I've been through in this thread, I thought I could insert music very well when I came into another problem. I successfully? use AddMusic 405 insert CrispyYoshi's "[OW] Donkey Kong Country 3 - Submap Shuffle". It appears in Lunar Magic and I set it to play on the Yoshi's Island submap, but in the game, no music plays. It says that the song needs the N-SPC patch. That's just adding the "-se" extension into the CMD, right? Every time I use AddMusic to insert music, first I type "AddMusic.exe ", then the ROM name with the .smc extension, then " -se", then I push "enter", then I type "AddMusic.exe ", then the ROM name with the .smc extension, then I push "enter". And it still plays no music. Why? I have worldpeace's "[Xkas] Reload Overworld" patch installed and I've also done some edits with Translhextion accroding to Azurik's "RPG Overworld Creation" tutorial. I've edited three or four levels, I have a lot more custom music that I was able to insert flawlessly, and I'm currently redoing the overworld. (This is all for a test hack that I'm making so that I can learn how to hack.)

I've heard this song in other hacks like Maww07's "Mario's Treasure Hunt" and YoshiFanatic's "Mario's Strange Quest". How did they make it play correctly and how can I do the same?

So have you guys been downloading all of the course packs for New Super Mario Bros. 2's Coin Rush?

I want everyone to discuss their opinions about these course packs and ask and answer questions like, "Is the "Impossible Pack" Kaizo hard?" and, "Is it against the rules to make all of these levels into a Super Mario World hack?" in this thread.

(I'm asking those above questions.)

I just realized that I forgot to put the ".txt" extension after this song in the configuration settings file, so I put it in there.

So now I think this is solved but I'm not sure yet.

Apparently, my problem isn't solved yet. When I tested it in the game, the music played for about a minute, then it stopped. If I try to go into a level or through an exit path or pipe (I have WorldPeace's "Reload Overworld" patch installed) after the music stops, I get a neverending "Mario Start" or black screen respectively. If the music is playing I go to a level or the overworld normally.

For some reason, I can't seem to get AddMusicK to work right. Some songs, such as Supertails's "Yoshi's Island - Title" and Lucas's "Pokemon G/S/C - Buena's Password", when I try to insert them with AddMusicK, give me an error saying:
Code
Error parsing pan ("y") command.

This didn't happen at all when I inserted the music above with AddMusic405. It inserted flawlessly with AddMusic405. So why won't AddMusicK, which is supposed to be the best AddMusic, insert it?

Also, how do you insert sample banks? The readme doesn't explain it very well.
