Okay. I'll try to do it less outside the first couple levels.

That's probably it, and I suggest either replace the springboard jumps (best option) or put them higher up. (i mean, if you really want to keep them...)

I guess I could replace them. Trouble is, what do I replace them with?

More Koopas would just make that section a boring slog.

So it's supposed to be impossible then?
*slow clap*

It's not supposed to be impossible.

You just have to avoid falling in the pits.

Running over the one-tile gaps works.

So does jumping, hitting a block, and landing on the next platform.

The P-Switch is for the Kaizo Trap at the very end.

Well then it's impossible to get that secret exit.

Actually, no. It's not.

You have to
hit a couple invisible coin blocks to make a bridge which you can travel across to the music blocks.

Remember that it's an optional secret exit, and you don't have to take it.

boringness and impossibilities take up most of your hack.

Boringness? #w{:<} How can I make it less boring, then?

Yeah, but if I eat the koopa troopas that fall (which is possible), I get two powerups.

I didn't think it was possible to eat the koopa troopas, which was why I put the flower there.

Now that I know it's not needed, I'll remove the flower in the next update.

The thing is, there's not too much focus on it in this level (unlike the entire hack ffs).

That is actually true. I'll lessen springboard use outside that level.

You did not make an original level, that was actually an edit.

So you're saying I made a blatant edit?
It doesn't look like one to me.

What makes you say it's a blatant edit?

So, let me get this straight.

The thing is, you shouldn't be trying to annoy the player, you should be trying to make a hard game.

True, true.

Pixels is right. You shouldn't only focus on springboards, you should also focus on other things, and in a creative way.

True, but the gimmick for the second level is springboards.

Besides, the whole level isn't any interesting at all.

Okay, and how do I make it more interesting exactly?

Also, by the looks of some levels, look like you didn't test this hack properly.

Well, there aren't many Kaizo testers and most of them are inactive, so it's not easy to get it tested.

The fourth level is not possible, even if you bring a powerup there, because of some parts, mostly the Chuck one, unless you use a cheat code there, which shouldn't be required anywhere in your hack.

I agree that cheat codes should not be required, so I will try to fix those parts that have issues.

Please post screenshots of the issues so that I know exactly what to fix.

I suggest redoing the levels, because they're not interesting right now. Just a friendly advice so you can become a Kaizo master.

Thanks for that piece of advice, but how exactly do I do that?

They look fine to me, and I want to save my creativity for later in the hack when it's needed most.

Originally posted by Daizo Dee Von
You can't put that there just to annoy the player.

Why can't I do that?

Originally posted by Daizo Dee Von
Plus, I asked you to restart the hack, not try to "fix it".

Right. You told me to "restart the hack with inspiration" without really explaining why the hack was bad or how to make it better.

I appreciate your effort, but this is actually going pretty well.

For my first ever hack, that is.

Originally posted by Daizo Dee Von
Of course, I'm not one of those people who hates others, so I'll give you a little tip: a Kaizo hack is NOT all about difficult persision jumps and making the hardest (or in your case, the cheapest) tricks.

Right. Wait...

Difficult precision jumps and hard tricks make it a hard game.

Therefore, I'm sorta doing that already, aren't I?

It's all about making the most original Kaizo Hack, while still keeping it fun at the same time.

I have played many Kaizo hacks.

They were not fun. They were evil, horrible, annoying things.

They were so difficult and enraging, but I kept trying.

My point is, Kaizo hacks have insane difficulty.

Insane difficulty is not fun.

Originality is good, but that's not easy.

Besides, I'm trying to save all my creative ideas for other levels, when I'm out of regular ideas.

For example, the first level of World V will be
about chasing a shell. That's not very common, now is it?

I agree. Cutoff isn't too bad, but it really makes you look lazy.

More importantly, as cstutor mentioned in his removal log, this hack is too short, it only contains one level which doesn't take too long to finish.

Wait a second, this is bad because it's too short?

Short games aren't bad because they're short.

Most NES games only had a handful of levels.

The level itself could be a lot better, it was really flat, this means it had no terrain variations (except for the parts with the triangle blocks), and I just had to run straightforward and jump over enemies from time to time, you should add pits, slopes, vertical edges, and obstacles (such as pipes, etc) to make your level less flat and more enjoyable.

That's quite true. The level was pretty tedious.

More obstacles would definitely help.

The cutoffs metioned by cstutor were fixed, but you still need to improve your level design and add more content (i.e. more levles) to your hack. I suggest you play some of our recently accepted hacks so you get a better idea of how you should design your levels.

Basically, you're saying:

1. It's too short, make it longer

2. Play other hacks.

To be honest, that advice isn't really helping him.

However, I do agree with improving level design.

It's not varied enough to be enjoyable.

A level is like flying an airplane; you should think while doing it, rather than handle the whole thing on autopilot.

I can beta test your hack if you want, by the way.

EDIT 2: yea... both exits lead nowhere.

BTW I played 6.2 instead of 6.8

Natnew, the latest version (Version 0.8) has that fixed.

Good luck with beating the hack and I hope you enjoy it!

I am aware that Kaizo hackers have standards.

You sure?

Natnew posted here just to say that he completed the first level.

I think he's pretty satisfied.

Two problems:
1) Being creative later isn't a good idea, as the player would've already quited.
2) You need to be original throughout the hack, not in certain areas.

You don't spread jelly on only the top part of toast. Likewise, you spread your creativity through out the entire hack.

I... agree. That makes sense.

I'll rearrange the levels so that creative levels are spread throughout the hack once I'm done all the levels.

Originally posted by Daizo Dee Von
Trust me, restarting the hack would be your best solution.

That's what they said about Super Island 2.0.

It's doing pretty well now.

I've made the same mistakes as you have, and I don't want you to suffer what I have suffered. It took me several attempts to finally get it right.

I see. Where's the IPS in which you got it right?

I know, it's just that the screen doesn't scroll up when you bounce on the note blocks.

I fixed that. Now it's "Vertical Scroll at Will".

Then use the springboards creatively, they can be used for more than falling down a pit!

Like what, exactly?

Because of the second cloud line not lining up, this is impossible.

Actually, it is.
You jump sideways through the first invisible block and land on the invisible block currently above Mario. After that, you can jump onto the second cloud.

I quickly cheated through the level and still have 78 seconds left. Timer is very bad.

Please suggest what the timer should be set to once you actually complete the level, rather than cheating through it.

I'll take your word for it, though.

Is it impossible to beat, or are you just not allowed to go to the castle despite beating it?

How to make it better: Attempt to use as few sprites as possible and mark all invisible coin blocks, and try to make a level.

Why it's bad. Invisble coin blocks unmarked and everywhere, stupid jumps.

I am getting rid of sprites where I can replace them and where they cause slowdown.

I will also mark some invisible blocks in places where you should know about them beforehand.

Thought that was already done in the kaizos.

Which kaizo has that in it?

Anyways, I appreciate your advice. I'll list all the issues with my hack according to you guys below:

- My level design is repetitive
- My level design is boring
- My level design is unoriginal
- Invisible coin blocks everywhere and unmarked
- Stupid jumps
- Can't go past Turned On You
- Bad timer on third level
- Unsatisfying to play/beat

Have a good day, everybody!

This jump here, between the four Koopas, is impossible unless...

...you can't get to the fourth Koopa because you are never fast enough to get there. I wouldn't be so ticked if...

I see. Thank you for pointing this out.

I'll fix that in the next version, and thank you for telling me that it was near the end.

That's still the latest uploaded version.

I already changed the gold in the intro background to brown in the non-uploaded current version.

Cookie, please!

If you want to experiment on how to use Map 16, do it in a test hack.

I see. So you want me to replace that with the regular level 104?

How many times... do we have to tell you... to NEVER... EVER... USE UNMARKED INVISIBLE BLOCKS?!?!

I'm using marked invisible blocks when I feel that you should know that they're there.

You can still live if you hit one of those unmarked invisible blocks.

Marked invisible blocks will be for pits and other areas where you should know about them beforehand.

Okay, there's been quite a bit of debate here about this.

To be honest, I agree with leod.

Should the invisible coin blocks here be marked?

No.

Why, you ask?

There's no need for the player to know that they're there.

How about here?

Yes, they should be marked.

Why?

The player should know about them.

Hitting one of those blocks will likely result in death, so the player should usually know about them unless you're trying to annoy them.

The player should usually also know about them if hitting the invisible block is required to progress.
