Really liked the music selection and the palettes.
The level design seemed good though there were a lot of times where you could tell wich level they were based on(especially The Islands 3 & 4). You might also want to fix the cutoff on the goal tape of The Islands 3.
Aside from that I think this hack looks good and has potential.#smw{:TUP:}

On The Islands 3 there´s the beggining, the midway point and the bonus room. Meanwhile on The Islands 4 there was the room where they explained the long jump (wich was pretty much the same as the original but without the pokeys) and the P-Switch part.

I remember of one Tiny Toones game. In the game I mean, the second level is wild western styled and made in two parts, one on a village and another one on a train.

That game you are talking about is Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!

Hi everyone, and welcome to my thread about my upcoming SMW hack, Justice for Mario! This is probably my first serious hack that I've made, and it has been in development for YEARS, so I wouldn't want all that effort to go to waste.

As of now, I have already finished the 6 worlds. If progress goes smoothly I guess I could finish this hack before the end of this year.

Now, let's get to everyone's favorite part, PICTURES!

Misc. stuff:

This is the title screen for now, with a slightly edited version of the original level as a placeholder:

The story:

First level(aka replacement for Yoshi's House):

Main Overworld:

And now, the worlds:

World 1: Village Outskirts. A world with no specific theme, inspired by Yoshi's Island from the original SMW.

World 2: Tanooki Mountain. A mountain themed world, home of the first Switch Palace.

World 3: Tailspin Plains. A plant themed world, which sports the first Ghost House in the game.

World 4: Fusion Caverns. A world with ice levels, fire levels, and some that combine both themes.

World 5: Chilling Seas. A water themed world.

World 6: Racoon Forest. A forest themed world.

World 7: Top of the world. A sky themed world.

Well that's all for now. If you spot any mistake please let me know so that I can fix them.

Well, didn't really expect to get such positive feedback(considering the fact that I think I can do better than this as far as aesthetics go). This is definitively a big morale boost.

Why are there no comments so far. I can't believe this is your first hack, everything looks really well done. The main map looks quite, but there are some perspective errors and lines missing (but that's really nitpicky). The levels all seem to have solid level design. Some palletes could still use some work like the grassy castle. Also I think it would be a good idea to realease a small demo, as you can get a better view on the level design. Good luck and please don't cancel it because you put so much work into it.

Wow, you're flattering me :). Technically this is not my first hack (my first actual hack is utter shit compared to this), but this is probably the first time that I'm actually trying to finish one. I'll definitively try to release a demo soon, since I will really like some feedback on the level design. Also, could you tell me what other palettes need to be fixed?

Pretty much what the last user said. Looks fantastic, especially for a first hack, with some minor albeit noticeable perspective errors on the OW and what looks to be pretty competent level design.

This is just nitpicking, but it'll make your hack far more noticeable if you use more custom palettes. I'd recommend going back through all of your levels' palettes and researching colour theory and different shading techniques.

That slight edge in design can really give your levels that personal touch, and make them far more appealing to look at and play.

EDIT:
If you want some tips, there are many members here who are great at designing palettes whom I'm sure would be happy to help you. I happen to have had formal instruction in graphic design with a focus on colour theory in my past, so I should be a pretty good person to turn to for palette design. Other members with noteworthy skills include the likes of Underway and Gamma V.

Thanks a lot for the comment:). I'll definitively try go back to my previous levels and give them some better custom palettes.

I'm really digging the palletes in this level, they look good for a first hack!
I could only wish I was capable of this when I first hacked this game. . . but that went awful.
Tons of cutoff and bad/ugly stuff and bad level design.

Have you considered working with any chocolate material? I.e. Sprites, blocks, music.

Believe me, when I first started hacking SMW 4 or 5 years ago, I was pretty much shit.
Just look at these abominations:

What you see here is just the result of years of slowly learning, fixing, and getting better at hacking.

Also, I've definitively considered working with custom sprites and such, but if I ever do that, that would be after I finish this hack.

Have you ever tried drawing custom tiles to create the illusion of having two tiles in one spot?

I haven't tried that yet, tough I guess I could try to later on to help with cutoff on my levels. Thanks for the advice!

This is really good in my opinion. I love how SMW-ish it looks. I like everything you've shown here, except this, this, this, and lastly, this.
I dislike the first two, because the grass has no shading on it for some reason. Shouldn't be hard to fix.
The reason I dislike the third one is because the color getting cut-off. I know what you were trying to do, but it just doesn't look good to me. I think you should just seperate it and make them two different islands.
The last one... it's actually really good, and probably I'm just nitpicking, (so feel free to ignore this one) but instead of using the same corner tile, I think you should use other ones. Interesting landshapes look nice.

Also, I LOVE that story. Very original and nice. #lm{pal}#lm{pal}#lm{pal}#lm{pal}#lm{pal}

This is just my opinion, but I disagree. I think Super Mario World-ish or just Super Mario World palettes are nice, and they make a hack feel like SMW. If you're going for a Super Mario World-ish feel, I don't see anything wrong with it. Though, it's true that fancy palettes make your hack far more noticeable.

Thank you very much for comment. Do these look better know?

Also, I went back to some of my levels and gave them new palettes, and was very pleased with the results:

And finally,I was able to finish world 5, so here are more pictures from it:

That's all for now. Again, if you see any mistakes, please make a comment so that I can fix it, stay tuned!

Well, I just played trough the demo and I gotta say that I really like the hollow and empty atmosphere it has. I also liked the simplified graphics and the lack of enemies and music as they add to the feeling of emptiness of the hack. As far as complaints, I don't really have any so I definitively want to see more of this as I think it looks very unique.

I'm really liking what I'm seeing in this pictures, especially that bonus room, the ghost house and the changes you made to the graphics.

The overworld looks pretty good, though I think you might want to brighten the palettes a bit, and also the perspective between the place where the first castle is situated and the small island next to it is WAY Off.

Aside from this the only other problem I'm seeing is that the palettes of the ghost houses on the overworld look weird, so you might want to fix them.

Overall I think this looks really good and I would like to see more of the levels once you finish them.
