I agree. When I looked at them I instantly preferred the light brown one to the others, especially that green. It's too bright for my liking.

I agree with what everybody has already said. Just some more points about the OW quickly:

1 - the fortress is slightly odd looking.
2 - it's Luigi, yet the status bar says Mario. I'm sure there's tools that can let you edit the status bar for Mario and Luigi.
3 - the bushes that are in the ground don't look good with the palette changes. They are really bright.

However, there is one good thing I can say:

1 - the level that you're showing off looks to be not generic and designed in such a way so that it introduces the player to the game.

Nice work SMWC! There are some good levels; there are also some pretty bad ones. And just boring ones. On par with last years, I think.

The main problem with the levels are:

- generic
- really long
- copies of other gimmicks
- gimmicky

Also where the fuck is Zone 343's secret exit?

In all seriousness, that OW isn't great. I doesn't really achieve it's goal of being watery. It comes across as a REALLY REALLY BAD palette change. Why not try actual water. Maybe something like what they did in the 8th VDLC? Like this.

Secondly, how does Mario walk on water?

Thirdly, if the world is mainly sky based, why is the OW watery?

Fourth, the whole map is illogical! How does the water stay on the island without falling off? If there were lakes on the island (or the island was one big lake) then I guess it would make more sense.

There's no perspective errors (that I can see), but the execution is sub-par at best.

Talking about the third screenshot, it's quite empty. There's no coins, or anything like that (enemies, etc.). I mean, what you've done with the line guides look nice, but still. If the level is still in progress, then, I guess I see why it's empty.

I guess this an sub-par start. The level looks okay, but the OW really doesn't. Try and redesign the OW, that's all I can say.

I second pretty much what everyone else said. I'm really liking how the OW looks, it's very high quality. I must say, I'm really liking the Special World...

Only thing I don't like are those coins. They just don't look right to me. They're not bad, by any means, but... I think they could be improved. They look a little too circular for me. And they seem a little big too. But, if you like them, then keep them.

I second what everybody else has said. I would recommend looking at projects that are currently in progress and seeing what they're doing right as a starting point too.

Also, SMWC has lots of tips. I would also recommend taking time to read them after you've started to make a hack.

All three of those are free to download. There are PRO versions that offer more features, but, a LITE version is available.

I would recommend Unity because it has a great physics engine and a really big user base. If you have a problem, you'll most likely find an answer. Of course, I recommend you start out with smaller projects/tutorials before starting a proper game.

This looks A LOT better.

Even though the new OW is quite uninspired, it's better. The only thing I don't get is the entire bridge part at the top. How is it being suspended like that? I spotted one thing, and I circled it in the image linked.

Also, the hat palette is still messed up. I would probably recommend asking for how to fix that, as it doesn't look great.

Still, it comes across as quite dreamy, which I suppose fits the theme of your levels. I would recommend removing the bridge part and replacing it with floating islands. They might do the same thing and look even better. Again, this is just my opinion- you can keep it the same if you like.

Speaking of that level, it's looking also quite nice. Only comment- the three turn blocks are quite high up. I can see you can still reach them, but I would recommend lowering them slightly.

You've made some significant good changes that have greatly increased the quality of your hack. Keep working, and I look forward to more updates.

If you're asking "can Unity make 2D games" then, yes, it can. It's much harder to make 2D than 3D, so, if you want to make a 2D platformer, Stencyl instead might be the way to go. I assumed you meant 3D. Of course, you could make it 3D and have the camera facing in such a way it appears to be 2D, but still. Your choice.
