There's 10 Rexes in that post. That's a lot.

I know I'm late to the party, but...

Not really much to say. It's looking good, but those Castle graphics certainly aren't the best (I mean, they're not bad, they're just not great). They're, as others have said, flat, boring, and they really do feel rushed. The level design, on the other hand, is looking quite nice. I really do like Mushroom Gorge. You really did pick the right GFX for it.

As for an idea for this - I've just had the god-awful idea of a Rex on steroids.

This is a great step forward in hacking a new game. Sure, it isn't without flaws, but, they're so minor, I can't knock it much. I'm looking forward to you attempting things like castles, or even bosses.

While I can agree it's square-ish, and that needs to be fixed, I kinda like it. Sure, there needs to be more sea decoration, the entire set of islands are well decorated and feel connected. They, however, feel quite cramped, and removing some of them may alleviate this, but, on the other hand, the palettes look really nice and I can only assume you've got some nice music to go with it. The only area that seems wrong is on the area with the '5' sign on it. The entire right hand side of that island seems to be floating in the air.

The OW seems to just suit my tastes... I suppose.

I personally find this game to be very Banjo Kazooie styled. There's WAY too many collectibles in each stage for my liking. Whilst I liked previous games in the series (Yoshi's Island DS, for example), there's too much of a focus on collecting for me.

If people enjoy it, and it does well, then, I'm sure it's a success to Nintendo.

If you want to keep it overhanging, fine, but be sure to give it a shadow, like this. Unless it's a cloud, but I don't think that's the case.

Might as well weigh on this hack - it isn't exactly looking great.

I pretty much second what everyone has said. I would recommend starting over on the first level, and trying to think about what you would like to achieve. Also, it might be best to redraw the EXGFX used in that room [if it's your own - if not, choose another one], as it looks really bland and very rushed.

There are perspective errors as well, the ghost house is too dark compared to the rest of your stuff, and lastly, the house doesn't have enough contrast.

EDIT: Just saw Ladida's post. This hacking isn't trying to be groundbreaking, but then again, there is nothing wrong with generic!

Meanwhile, I've been designing the first level of the hack in which you just saw the overworld for:

It's here.

It's meant to be a simulation of sorts. This does work into the plot, but it's also a little different from the standard "Grassland" theme - as it's now in 8-bit. I've also added some murals onto the wall occasionally, to make the grey background a little less empty. You can't really see them though in that image (one is in the top-left area, one is in the middle towards the bottom).
