Hi, I apologize in advance for the crappy video (just turn off the sound and look at the game itself). The question's in the title, folks.
While on the subject, have any other pre-SMW/8-bit Mario (or clones) games been fully remade as SMW hacks? You'd think there would be more projects like that with nice tools like Lunar Magic around.

It seems like this might be it but I'm not sure (can't see the images anymore): http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=16459&page=3

Ooh, interesting. I guess he's not coming back to it, which is a shame because it seems that a faithful port is much more doable nowadays (speaking as a noob to SMW hacking). For example the final level lock was sort of done in Brutal Mario.

This is a project I might actually want to do myself, provided I can pull it off accurately enough. But I'm working on something else right now.

Would be interesting to play the WIP hack though if anyone has it.

I'm looking for two kinds of hacks;
1. The most unique hacks in terms of mechanics and aesthetics/audiovisuals. Like complete overhauls into non-mario games.
2. The most impressive hacks in terms of asm hacking.

Thanks!

You can add KiddEd for Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Master System/SMS), Wario Land 2 editor for Wario Land II (GB/GBC) and K-E for Kid Chameleon (MD/GEN). The last will be updated to a java version according to its author though I don't know when.

The first one is a fav MD/GEN game of mine, and I've been hoping to see a mod to it that adds a shadow when jumping and removes accidentally hitting walls in narrow areas for a while now.

I've never had an issue with the directions, but there is a recent hack that attempts to fix what you're talking about. Check RHDN.

For 2D platformer variations it's Yoshi's Island, Wario Land, Rocket Knight Adventures, Wonder Boy III, Shinobi 3, Super Metroid, Boulder Dash and Solomon's Key.

Have you tried Kid Chameleon for the MD/GEN? It plays like a mixture of SMB3, Wario Land 1-2 and Alex Kidd. People tend to have an issue with the lack of a save feature, but you can just emulate and I think recent releases allow for a quick save.

There are even some nice (though very hard) romhacks for it.

Does anyone here have the most recent version of this editor and can upload it here or send it to me? The link in the below thread is dead and I haven't gotten a reply from the author.

Thanks.

Edit:
On the subject of Wily Wars, this is a collection that's received mixed reception over the years, mainly for not being quite faithful (overall in a bad way) to the NES games in how it controls, for having even more slowdown than in the NES games, and for most of the music not really taking advantage of the MD/GEN sound chip. Recently there have been GG codes made that fix some of the control issues, and if you play the game in Regen Debug, you can completely remove the slowdown without any side effects (set cpu cycles to 808+ in one of the menus). I'm linking to these things below to help this remake collection get some more attention.

I'm finishing up my second Alex Kidd in Miracle World romhack and for my next project I'd like to make something 16-bit, which will probably be a Wario Land fan game with some Kid Chameleon and Alex Kidd elements. At first I was planning to turn Kid Chameleon itself into a Wario game, but it seems I'm gonna have to wait a while for the next version of the game's editor (which will be java based and have stuff like graphics editing implemented) and even then it might not have what's needed to pull it off well, since I have to change some physics and mechanics to fit Wario.

Speaking as a non-hacker/coder, I'd like to hear this board's opinion on what would be easier to work with? I've seen a SMW-based Wario Land 1 game and while promising it was missing a ton of key features, which I'm assuming is advanced work to implement. Are there any good mario-like engines made in GMS that I can pick up and build on?

Thanks.

Thanks! A couple of questions about the Hello engine if I may:
1. It seems based on SMB3 All-Stars at its core (mario's physics, overworld mechanics), are there ready-made settings to change that to SMW-style or other mario games in there?
2. Is the framerate steady and at 60 fps? It seemed a bit uneven in the YT video example.

I'm downloading the GMS trial now, hopefully I can make some sense out of this.
