I'm really confused

I thought the whole point of a vanilla level was to use original smw graphics, yet I keep seeing either custom drawn graphics or inserted graphics. am I missing something or did nobody read the rules?

Usually if levels made you think this, it probably means they deserve an 8, 9, or 10 in aesthetics :P The "inserted graphics" are creative uses of vanilla tiles. And this doesn't just mean using grass tiles in a cave. I can use anything in the game, such as Iggy's hair, the arrows from the overworld, the explosion graphics from castle cut scenes, etc. You can use yy-chr to do this easily, but it's also possible to create "new tilesets" without it.
You can do this with sprites too (see Fabulatory, Interplanetary).

wow, that's all map16? All my backgrounds in my current project are creative map16 stuff but nothing compared to what I've seen here.
