Hi guys, looks like it's been yet another C3! This one quite caught me off guard this year, honestly, so I don't have all that much to show! But, I had enough to like throw a couple screenshots and stuff together so why not, it's the winter season!

So recently, I released my last SMW Hack, Super Kekcroc World 3. I've really had such a wonderful time making SMW Hacks, so I'd like to show off some of the last stuff I have leftover from developing these 3 (5 if you count the side hacks) hacks I've spent the last 3 years working on! Some of this stuff came in the bonus zip included with Kekcroc World 3, but since not too many people checked that out, I'll just showcase them here.

Original beta for SKW2

I had the original plan when making Super Kekcroc World 2 to make it a semi-open world platformer in the vein as Cave Story. This demo actually got pretty far into development, until I quickly realized that I was far from capable of performing something like this during my early days of SMW Hacking.

This hack had a completely original (and cringeworthy imo) story that I completely scrapped for SKW2's reboot. Worlds would have their own classifications, and you could (at one point) unlock a fast travel method that would allow you to go back to previous locations and uncover secret locations. That never happened, obviously.

The hud was completely redesigned too, with flashiness over function really, because having the item box so far off the screen meant that grabbing the item was nearly impossible (and at the time I didn't think of the patch that just instantly gives you the item) and the coin counter would have gone up to 6 digits to be spent in shops. That unfortunately was "implemented" but combined with my lack of ASM knowledge and VWF Dialogues not really having the stuff in it at that time, I had to give up on that idea.

The game would have had a central hub world, East Croc Town, which would have served as the "Mimiga Village" to this Cave Story inspired hack. The plan was to have East Croc Town evolve as the game continued, and the pipes would eventually get fixed and you could move throughout the world using those. The concept was for there to be a big huge map, with tons of people to talk to and interact with but unfortunately an idea like that was INCREDIBLY CHALLENGING, if not impossible to an ASM noob such as myself, but I did come around to implementing working pipes.

The hack would not have an overworld at all. I felt (and still kinda feel) that overworlds were quite outdated for a hack centered around story. I instead was using a VERY slightly modified version of the original no overworld patch to accomplish this, but very quickly did I find issues. Despite the patch freeing up a ton of free SRAM to use, I repeatedly found bugs within the code that were hard to work around. This working around led to the game making numerous EXTREMELY strange design choices out of necessity, and led to the game feeling very hacked together. This feeling of the game being held together with duct tape was part of the reason I cancelled it.

I cancelled this hack nearly 9 months from the launch of SKW2, due to the numerous complications that came with developing something like this, as a complete noob, from complete scratch. I deemed it impossible, but I'd love to give it another shot. I only have one remaining build, but the source is completely in tact. The version in this BPS is about as good as it gets, there was never a build better than this version, but I remember removing some stuff in my last ditch attempt to resuscitate the hack.
EDIT: aaaaaaaaaa forgot to include the bps

Day of the Muncher 2?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?
Day of the Muncher 2 is a hack that I would still like to think is a possibility, but it would certainly need some help from the community to get off the ground. Me and Dark Prince worked together and originally made the first DOTM on June 22nd, 2020. The hack took 5 days to make, from start to finish, and we worked our butts off. DOTM is THE hardest I've ever worked on a project in such a short period of time. As such, I'd love to expand on DOTM, but I'd also like some help in this process. I've already began work on a DOTM2 concept, with a SMB2 style character select and we've basically planned out the entire plot. (Spoiler alert, not much better than DOTM1) We'd like to use SA-1, but the VWF Dialogues patch doesn't work with SA-1 at this time, (at least, last time I checked.) DOTM2 really only has about 2 screenshots right now, but here they are.

The concept is to have 4 separate players, each with different dialog and control schemes. Each of these characters would call for replay value, since there'd be only 15 levels and a pretty linear plot, so to get to experience the hack from different points of view is the replay value.

In the way of levels, I'm still thinking but uh hey, there's uh this guy! This thing uses an absolutely obscene amount of VRAM and is basically pointless. So uh yeah, if this is your thing, there it is.

And this is where you come in, I guess!
I'll be honest here, I'm a really busy guy nowadays. They made me go back to school after quarantine, and alongside some other projects in this thread, I've really not got much time to spare. HOWEVER, if you are actually interested in making this a collab hack of sorts, I would LIKE to possibly make this hack a reality. But don't expect it any time soon, unless there's just like OVERWHELMING need for a day of the muncher 2. So if you would like to help out, or are interested, please let me know!

The Great Kekcroc World Resource dump
So I honestly never thought I'd do this. Not because I had moral obligations, not because I felt these needed to stay to myself, but because I never thought I would make enough assets for the Kekcroc World series to warrant releasing this. However, after a while I decided that yeah, it was worth bothering to release this stuff, so here we are.

Original Music for SKW1
This here is a zip of all of the original tracks I made for SKW1. Enjoy?? These songs are all actual garbage, but I guess it could be worse?

Crap music
Download to the crap music

Original Music for A Kekcroc Christmas
This game was bad, so it's really only fitting that the soundtrack as well is bad. Regardless, here it is. I found some samples in here corresponding to a song I don't still have so uhm, lost media!

Christmas flavored
Epic christmas download

Original Music for Kekcroc World 2
Considering the hard times I went through developing this game, it's only fitting that this soundtrack mostly consists of songs not even used in the final game! There is, however, WAY more than this, as I voice acted (and ported to SMW!) the entire second world. Unfortunately, we ran out of space by MERE BYTES of data, so sadly the feature was cut. Unfortunately, kinda don't have enough space to upload those lines, as I completely dubbed them in the WAV format, and they're uh kinda massive. Anyways, here's the soundtrack! And yes, before you ask, unfortunately I lost the original port of the Windows remix... I found the original samples in the sample folder, but it seems the SPC and the mml is lost to time.

Second edition music
woah is that a download
Original Music for Kekcroc DASH!
Yeah, there isn't really much here. Kekcroc DASH was kinda an experiment anyways, so not much focus was put into the actual music behind this one. Anyways, here's the 3 songs I ported for this.

This game is a thing
Download a thing

Original Music for Kekcroc World 3

This is by far a large collection. There isn't really much I can say about this soundtrack, as I worked the hardest I've ever worked on a hack towards making this soundtrack. Wether or not that work landed? completely up to you! There's quite a few beta songs and DOTM songs in here too, because most songs from DOTM came from SKW3 originally! Enjoy these ports!

Third time's the charm

Tetriminos from SKW3
These are the tetris blocks from Kekcroc World 3. Included are the graphics, sprites and uberasm controller behind this. Surprisingly or not, these blocks are far from complex.

Download me you fool
SKW3 Menu system and VWF Messages

I'm gonna come out and say this right now, there is NO guarantee that any of this will work. The menu system was absolutely hacked together from scraps in the final game, and this is almost guaranteed not to work. However, there's a SMALL chance this'll work so I'm posting it anyways. Here's the Menu System from SKW3.

Hope this works

Minecraft Code SKW3
Minecraft is the funny block game, and I decided to put this into SMW! Sounds easy right? RIGHT?! Wrong! I delayed the game TWICE due to this level, (ONE SINGULAR LEVEL) repeatedly kept breaking. So uh yeah thanks minecraft. Anyways, I can't guarantee this is bug free, but it is a thing right?

Mineycrafta

A bit of misc code
This is just some worthless stuff I thought was cool and took a while to code so like here you go shut up and enjoy it
SKW3 uberasm reimplementation of the original game's title screen code
A nice uberasm credits sequence you could maybe use in your own hack?

Durango Simulator aka my first indie experiment
Well, that ends the SMW Stuff, so I might as well show off what I've been working on in my spare time! I've recently been working on a somewhat spiritial sucessor for the Kekcroc series (but not really) called Durango Simulator! This game is far from serious, but I'm mainly doing this to learn to use real game creation tools for actually serious projects (cough kekcroc world 4 cough) Here's the trailer I released on christmas day, I really wanted to get a demo out for C3 but sadly that just didnt happen... Some day though! Here's the game.

So, what's next?
A lot has changed over these short 3 (almost 4) years of working on SMW hacks for SMWCentral and I've loved my time here. Everyone here is wonderful and I thank each and every one of you for the great community you have made here. I don't think I could ever truly leave this website, I've been using it since I was at least 5, so I don't think I'm going anywhere any time soon. But for now, I become the player instead of the creator. Now, is a Kekcroc World 4 or Day of the Muncher 2 or a different property impossible? No, not at all. I just need inspiration, and unfortunately that's not been hitting me all that hard lately. Regardless, I hope you guys have a wonderful C3, and I better see some good hacks! Until next time, Knucklesfan.

Nah, I used gamemaker for this actually. pretty unfitting considering this is a game about unity, but whatever lol

Knucklesfan, I think your crazy universe is one of my favourite to discover over here. The way you mix and match various references and own them is entertaining me a lot. Thank you so much.

Thank you! this is probably the highest compliment I could possibly receive lol

Also I had no idea that LX5 was working on VWF again lol, when I posted this they hadn't posted the post yet. Checking that out ASAP!

Every time you make a new SA-1 pack update, I say that it can't get any better, it's as good as it's gonna get. Then, you make an update that blows that preconception out of the water. Vitor, you are doing incredible work!

The Tetris one was probably my favourite level in the entire hack so letting others use them in hacks is going to be interesting seeing as I feel you could use them to exploit other level assets.

Yeah, that's mainly why I released the tetris blocks, Id love to see what others can do with the blocks. I feel I didn't fully explore it's possibilities in the hack itself.

But seriously I didn't see it as a Sprite at first so that is pretty crazy that it is.

It's literally just that being rendered on the sprite layer lmao, working with the hitboxes would have taken way more effort than I was willing to put into something like this #smrpg{:D}

This hack was actually REALLY impressive. I would've just been impressed with just one world, but you went about and made an entire 9 world Mario hack here. The physics at first were kinda uncomfortable because I went in expecting SMW physics, but once I got used to them, the hack became absolute fire. Great work, and good luck!!

Hi everyone! Great to be around for yet another C3! This year, unlike most years I don't really have that much to show off, but I have been working on something other than SMW lately that I've been feeling pretty proud of. I recently decided to put my romhacking on hold for a short time to explore indie game development and learn more programming languages and this is one of the fruits of my labor!

I think I made it too obvious what I'm really working on here in that video...

Knuxfan's Tetriminos is my take on a Tetris clone inspired by games on the Super Nintendo and the Amiga.

I made basically everything in this game, minus the soundtrack, I contributed (basically) all of the graphics and code. I was inspired by games like SMW and music from modarchive to base the graphics and gameplay of this game.

I added features such as ghost pieces, hold pieces, and fast drop, but the game mostly kept to the rules of the original Tetris on the NES, with some improvements to gameplay.

The game also has a ton of settings for players to change to get the exact experience they want! There's also extensive modding support, allowing you to customize the backgrounds (and by release, the blocks) through modifying simple XML files, making it easy to mod for anyone!

The game also has a ton of fun extra game modes, like rotating board, scaling board, and even BIGGER board! If you hate having fun, you can even combine all 3 for the absolute worst Tetris experience of your life!

I even did some other fun stuff like porting the game to switch, and including discord rich presence for Windows players. (Oh yeah, did I mention the game runs on both Windows and Linux natively?)

Okay, but I am gonna say it.

All of this really was just a test to see if I was competent enough to code my engine for future projects. One of those future projects I hope to develop after this is Super Kekcroc World 4. The game's already entered pretty early development, so for the people who care about Kekcroc World, rejoice! You might not have to wait much longer (just another 4 years lol)

Download when?

Download kinda now? The game's open-source on Github, and I've already made a few releases, but they're kinda buggy at the moment and I can't say they're the best experience to try the game out with. That being said, if you are interested in contributing to the game, I really would love any help I could get. If people show interest in this, I might not just release the game in 7 days but add more features before doing so and delaying the game. Dunno. That being said, the game is planned to release January 17th, 2021 if nothing goes wrong.

Sorry I couldn't bring much SMW this C3, but hey, at least I brought something, right? (Also, deep apologies for the crappy jpeg compression on the screenshots, blame windows #tb{¬_¬})

Hope you all enjoyed what I had, and have a great C3!
