Hey. I'm trying to make bosses based off of Super Mario Land's Dragonzamasu and Hiyoihoi. I know a bit of ASM, but I'm having trouble loading the GFX. It always says that the GFX is too large or something on the likes of that. I'm trying to figure that one out.

If you haven't already downloaded the Pelican Bros., Pelican Bros. is a good example of a sprite taking a number of hits. I played with it to make it have 5 hits. This does read in hex so if you put 10, it is actually 16 hits.

This is a good topic. I'm trying to learn ASM to be able to switch the graphics. I figured out how to switch the graphic palettes on pre-made sprites and customize my pre-made sprites to an extent.

Since you said mini-bosses are allowed, I was wondering did or will anybody make a King Totomesu, Dragonzamasu
or Hiyoihoi from Super Mario Land. Although they were bosses in that game, their attack patterns are relatively simple where I would regard them on Birdo level or something to that degree.

Those are bosses, not mini-bosses. And to have accurately working versions of them would be somewhat difficult, since they are all fairly enormous. Dragonzamasu also wouldn't exactly work with SMW's game mechanics, and he is incompatible with the current version of the Marine Pop. King Totomesu is pretty much SMB1 Bowser, which is available. That leaves Hiyoihoi, who would also require a Ganchan sprite and massive fireball hp.


Yeah, I definitely agree that Dragonzamasu would be the hardest of the above mentioned sprites to code but I don't see too much of an issue with King Totomesu or Hiyoihoi. If I knew how to change the graphics of a sprite using ASM I would create King Totomesu myself using SMB1 Bowser as a base. Hiyoihoi shouldn't be too difficult either using either Birdo or Mouser as a base.

I'm trying to create new sprites using other people's sprites as a base. Blocks aren't really too hard but the next step I'm trying to figure out is to find how to manipulate the ASM code for the graphics that a sprite uses. Does anybody have any suggestions?

This can be helpful in creating Tryclide and King Totomesu.

Exactly. I revamped the Pelican and turned him into a boss type of enemy. I gave him 5 hits and the sprites he throws at Mario are Homing Bills.

That's amazing. How do you modify the graphics of a sprite like that? I'm still learning ASM and I can modify basic routines of sprites but that's about it.

Does anybody have a block that can shatter under the weight of a Power Thwomp but remains intact if Mario or another sprite walks on it. I'm thinking of making a large Thwomp kinda like those seen in Castle 4 and the final castle on New Super Mario Bros.

I am currently editing Mouser and created a custom Morton battle by changing the palette to Morton's graphics. I plan to have Morton throw the golem rocks (similar to the Golem's in Flint Hearth of Super Mario TKO) but I'm not sure how to modify the ASM to change the objects he throws.

It's going to be a while before the hack is finally released. I'm in grad school so I don't think it will be released until the summertime. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to implement most of them. However, those doors before Lemmy are all fake. Also cape feathers are not at the beginning of the hack, I just used them in all of the bosses because it is easiest to defeat them all. I mean even the original SMW I used cape feathers like non-stop.

true. i did that with Mouser. I created a Morton battle by doing a palette swap from Mouser to Morton.
