My level is now here

Sprite disassembly courtesy of Atari2.0
Foreground is Jungle Ruins by levelengine
Music is Watcher of the Skies by Genesis, from their 1972 album Foxtrot. Written by Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, and Michael Rutherford. Port by me. Shoutouts to Wakana for their amazing porting tutorial.

Thank you LouisDoucet for playtesting and providing invaluable feedback.

Good luck and have fun!

Silly me

I didn't read the rules in full, and this won't qualify on account of custom sprites. But I'll leave it here in case folks want to play it anyway.

Edit: Even sillier. I had left the dev midway in. New version is posted.

Song - Sell Out by Reel Big Fish

Frankly I'm impressed that my song was 3/6 for artist guesses. I didn't think I was well known enough, so I'll take that as the biggest win. Thanks to everyone who gave feedback. I know rock n roll isn't everyone's cup of tea, and I do want to improve this port in particular and all my porting in general. It's still a learning process.

So, if anyone has better samples for trumpets and horns, please send them my way. <3

Congrats to the winners and to all who entered. Happy holidays!

Here's a few levels from my upcoming hack, the sequel that maybe 4 people asked for.

All levels are named after, and contain ports of, old school rock n roll songs.

I love the concept of 'hard versions' of each level. It gives the player a way to test their strength after beating the OG versions, allowing them to push their boundaries further. Just like therapy.

Over a year in the making, the sequel to Rock n Roll 1 is nearly finished. 16 exits, three switch palaces, an epic final castle, and a custom built final boss

This hack contains music from 24 rock n roll artists ported by hand.

Planned release for Friday, January 14th. Until then, happy holidays, everyone!

After more than a year of work, the second installment of the Rock 'n' Roll Mario Show is nearly ready.

Coming in on the lighter side of Kaizo: Expert, this hack contains 20 exits along 3 paths with a challenging final boss. Players seeking to shake things up may enable optional hidden blocks for an even greater challenge.

The hack features songs from 24 different artists, all ported by hand into SMW.

The Rock 'n' Roll Mario Show: Set 2 releases Friday, January 14th. Good luck and have fun!

I've got a song I've been meaning to port for a while, and this is the perfect opportunity.

I'm pretty happy with how this went, considering I also had a romhack race level to polish up at the same time. Thank you everyone who listened, everyone who voted, and especially everyone who gave feedback. I'm not done working on this song and I want to do justice to Crystal Chronicles before submitting its first port to the site.

By the way, if anyone has a crumhorn sample, or in lieu of that, a really bright and buzzy oboe sample, please send it my way.

I am looking for one tester for my latest kaizo hack, Enter the Gizzverse. It is a hack dedicated to the Aussie rock band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and features ports of their songs throughout the game. The hack is 9 exits and is largely platforming oriented. There are occasional custom blocks, sprites, and asm, but the levels are largely vanilla.

The player is meant to eat the poison mushroom to take damage, allowing them to land on the turn blocks and jump normally. I can move the platform up one, or put a little death block pillar in the way to prevent them from making it without taking damage.

The same trick (take damage to prevent spin breaking blocks) is intended in the second half of gamma knife. I will find a way to prevent the cheese.
Perhaps this damage can be indicated with red coins somehow? My other testers have quickly figured out that you are meant to take damage to break the spin, so it could just be that this particular trick was hard for you to read. Everything else you got right away it seemed. Honestly the best thing to see was "no notes, fun level" on four of them :D

I'll see what I can do to make the fastpipes more legible, and I'll fix the other QoL items. Thank you so much for testing!

Last note: would you like me to put you in the credits as dubiousdinobot, or another name?

I realized the reason it was obvious before was that the level has been shortened. The player used to be required to jump up to a muncher platform during the d-boost section. There was an additional trick between the poison mushroom / spin blocks, and the shell jump. I cut it to make the level shorter and easier, more in line with the rest of the hack. The current setup is less obvious. So instead I added some death blocks to jump over.

I'm try to shy away from heavy use of indicators in my games. They get used where they matter most.

Hi, I'd like to share with you all the kaizo hack that I worked on for the better part of last year. It's based on the music of my favorite band, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Much like my previous two hacks, each level features music by the band, ported by yours truly. This time around, I wanted to make exclusively unsampled ports, for two reasons. One, to challenge myself to make good music without relying on outside samples as a crutch, and two, because King Gizzard is known in part for making lo-fi music in their earlier works.

The game has 9 exits and is marked at intermediate difficulty. The main focus is on platforming with very occasional item tricks. Thanks, enjoy, rock on, don't slip on the drip.
