Hi! I'm new to SMW hacking. I have been learning pixel art lately (examples below) and I'm interested in replacing the Mario GFX. I wanted to know what I was getting into and quite how much I'd need to draw to get an even partially usable sprite. (Okay it's a lot
I probably need to set my sights a little lower.) I couldn't find any particular documentation on how all the Mario sprites are arranged, other than that they're mostly in gfx32.bin and gfx00.bin. I got a bit sidetracked into taking notes on this and started assembling some diagrams. I thought maybe they'll be useful to others? I'm still working on diagrams for the remaining GFX - the cape, p-balloon, running-up-walls and the miscellaneous ending animations.
Anyway, before I get a lot further down this rabbit hole, I was wondering how others go about creating and editing complicated sets of sprite graphics? I imagine it would be pretty frustrating to work with them in this layout, with the pieces scattered everywhere, so do people write scripts to rearrange them into, e.g. Aseprite files? I figure that would probably be how I'd go about it but I figured I might be able to save some work if I saw how others do it. Any advice is appreciated!
