For the first boss of my hack, I wanted to take Dispari Scuro's Mouser sprite and make a few mods to it. Specifically, the boss would have 10 HP, and when it has 5 HP left, it would perform a "last stand". On said last stand:
  • The boss moves faster.
  • It throws Bob-Ombs more frequently.
  • It turns red.
  • It slams the ground and potentially stuns Mario.
  • At exactly 5 HP left, it must display a message (specifically, message 2 of Level 4; the boss fight is part of Level 9).

Also, à la the Ultimate n00b Boss, this boss's HP must be displayed on the screen.

I have managed to get most of this stuff working on my own. However, I still have a few problems with the sprite:
  • The message displays, like, once every half a second, and causes the boss to go "off-kilter", potentially causing him to fall off the level and softlock the game. How do I get the message to display only once?
  • The boss slams the ground at the start of his jump, not when he lands. How do I fix this?

That worked! ...Eventually. It took me a while to realize I could just pick any old unused RAM address from the $7F9C7B range to use for this purpose. #smw{^_^;} Either way, thanks!

Well, I finally figured out how to make Mouser slam the ground at the right time.

All I had to do was add

As you can see, we have 3 steps here:
1) As soon as the spaghet is ready, throw everything in the warrior helmet in the middle (red arrow)
2) Once you drained some of the water (keep some water in the spaghet), QUICKLY throw it in the bowl with the egg salmonella (blue arrow)
3) Mix it very fast! If you hear the level clear fanfare song, then it's done!

Hi again, SMW Central!

So, after a lengthy hiatus from this website of a little over eight years, I somehow got motivated to get back into ROM hacking.



What you're now about to see is the fruit of that labor. Introducing Yuki's Adventure, a not-quite-vanilla-but-definitely-not-chocolate hack in which you play as a Koopa, and you're trying to overthrow Bowser, then Peach! This hack evolved out of an idea I've had for a Grand Theft Auto-like Mario game for about 15 years.

Right now, this hack is complete up to about two thirds into World 2. Come inside!

You can also help me fix some of the KNOWN BUGS:
  • In general, I could probably use an artist to work on the player graphics.

    ^^^^^Yuki/Linda flying in a cape looks especially cancerous. #smw{:x} Starting to work on this.
  • The Blooper, which is Romi's Blooper custom sprite, is a sprite memory hog, and I don't know why (in the sole level it appears in, Wet and Messy, you might notice things like an Urchin losing its face).
  • Is there a way to get the "directional coin" ? Block to spawn the directional coin more than once? If not, then I'll have to redo part of Go Away Ghost Ship!
  • I modified Galoombas and Bob-Ombs in Tweaker so that Yoshi can hold them in his mouth and spit them out. But when he does, they're permanently stunned and can't get back up/explode. Can this be fixed?
  • The fact that a green Yoshi shows up as black on the overworld, no doubt to him sharing a palette with Luigi/Linda (I bet the fix for this is probably something really easy...)
  • AddMusicK is kinda jank. Most notably, if you get 100 stars, you'll do the bonus game in silence. Testing the level by way of the infamous "endless bonus game" glitch showed that the music and sound worked that way.
  • The Bomb Koopas are bugged. If I use a cape or Koopa shell to kill them, the game somehow still considers them "alive", and they're able to hurt the player.


UPDATE on July 7, 2020: Tough crowd! Well, with the rather cold reception this hack appears to have gotten, I guess I won't be submitting this to the Hacks section. Back to the drawing board with me! See you in the future with Demo 2. #w{=(}

Yuki and Linda the Koopas are based off of two characters from an old cartoon idea I had, Back to Coolsville, a blatant Scooby-Doo ripoff that went nowhere. Yuki is on the right, and Linda on the left.

But a quick trip to Best Buy for an 8BitDo controller helped me to see the light...

I want to make an upside down Ptooie Plant.

I've been using Romi's Ptooie Plant as a base. But while I've successfully been able to flip the actual plant upside down, I haven't had as much luck with the spiked ball.
