Masashi Hamauzu - Soaring Wings
György Ligeti and The King's Singers - The Alphabet

I won't lie, Ahora te puedes marchar was really close, but I figured The Alphabet wasn't gonna get as much love so I cast a vote it's way. If I could I would've put all 3 of these up here though.

Some background to explain the post: I'm currently taking an Open-Source Software Development course in college, the main premise of which involves us finding an open-source project on GitHub and spending the semester working on it, either improving or expanding it in some way. Me being a music porter, I searched and found the repositories for SPCtoMML, IT2AMK, and PetiteMM, and it seems that none of them have been updated in at least 3 years (with the exception of PetiteMM's readme).

The basis of my question comes to this: were I to choose one or more of these three music tools, would there be any possible value to me working on and trying to improve them? I occasionally see people talking about how the MML output from at least some of these programs aren't immediately usable with AMK, or just unoptimized in some way, so it seems to me that there's room to improve these tools in some way. Of course, I have little experience with any of these tools, so I could be wrong, or underestimating how much work it would take. (I assume this wouldn't be stepping on the toes of the software creators since they uploaded them to GitHub, but if it is feel free to let me know.)

Any thoughts on this matter from people more familiar with the programs or using them would be greatly appreciated.

4-Mat - Rose
Bosse - So oder so

On Our Own was pretty close and I was considering putting the Tim Follin song up there, but I didn't want both my picks to be retro game-y, plus I'm biased towards the German language, so I had to keep So oder so.

Lena Raine - Quiet and Falling
M2U - Gypsytronic

Unfortunately my votes were a bit more rushed this time, but I still feel fairly confident in my picks. All We Ever Look For was pretty close, and I might've picked the Brawl theme in another universe where I wasn't so familiar with it already.

Chris Christodoulou - The Rain Formerly Known as Purple
Auxcide - The Resolute Heart

I respect the classic jazz pick with Boogie Blues Etude, but it didn't really capture my attention enough for me to consider it.

RednGreen - Breakbeat Darkness
Christopher Larkin - Sealed Vessel

Yeah I'm a shameless RednGreen stan, what can I say? And I probably know too much behind the context of Sealed Vessel's dynamic functionality in the game to be swayed away from it. Really like the concept of Canto Ostinato though, and I have big respect for the Youngblood Brass Band pick due to high school band nostalgia for their song Brooklyn.

Theophany - Oath to Order
Men I Trust - Seven (Garage Session)

What can I say, I'm a sucker for quality orchestral renditions of game music. And I really want to solo over Seven's chord changes after hearing them, those are some good licks waiting to happen.

As for the others, I was close to picking Lake from DPPt, and Gate of Steiner and Moonlit Museum were also pretty good. Oh, and not to mention Imaginary Places just sampling Bach's Badinerie and rapping over it? Certainly unexpected. All in all, really good set.

Driftrud - The Lush Beds
Yuka Tsujiyoko & Takeru Kanazaki - Twilight of the Gods

Yeah yeah, I know, voting for my own track. This was a really good set, I also really enjoyed Unknown Actor and some of the others were good contenders, but in the end none of them induced the same kind of emotion in me that Twilight of the Gods does. (Perhaps I have too much experience with the context of the song and the motifs woven within, though. Oh well, it is what it is.)

Snarky Puppy - Lingus (Live Ver.)
Peter Hajba - Scatterbrain

Timekeeper was also pretty good, and Beautiful One Day was pretty solid.

Sinc-X - bowser's castle
Igor Stravinsky - Spring Rounds

The VGM nerd in me compels the first pick, and the band/orchestra nerd in me compels the second. What more can I say?

ELDC/XLDC idea: Exorbitant Level Design Contest: Make a level that is excessively high-quality, over the top, extra, or with obvious effort put in, but in a way that has no real impact on the quality of the level, or for no apparent reason whatsoever.

flashygoodness - Rivals Theme (PC-98 Remix)
Yosuke Yasui - STELLAR LIGHT

It really is hard to beat flashygoodness here. Although, let it be known that protoculture and The Last Flight were also good contenders, and I appreciated the classical jazz from A Walkin' Thing, plus I'm enthralled to see Charles Ives here, as polarizing as that particular tune and recording of such is to most people. A surprisingly good set, that much is for sure.

And here I was stressing over the thought that I'd have to speedrun my entries in an already packed up semester. Many thanks, o gracious host.

Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons (Live Scenes From New York version)
Tsuneo Imahori - Stand Proud

Benighted was also pretty good, and it was very entertaining to stumble across Sneaky Snitch, though I can't hand it the win over these two. I didn't think I'd like the Dream Theater tune as much as I did due to it being so long for a rock song but it really grew on me over the course of the listen. And I can't help but really feel the sense of accomplishment and overcoming a peak in Stand Proud, and the orchestration with the brass-band feel really just sells the vibe of the fighting spirit. (Am I biased because I nominated it? Yeah, probably.)

Lena Raine - Awake
Silentroom - Rainshower

There were some other decent ones but at the end of the day these two took the cake.

Andrew Neu - Slipstream
Brendan Byrnes - Operator

It was a very tight battle between Operator and Anesthetize, but Operator's tuning and the chords that came from that won me over in the end. And naturally I'm picking Slipstream, that bari sax line will never get old, not to mention the stellar solos and solis throughout all tied together with a tight chord progression.

Look ma, there I am!

This was surprisingly fun to participate in, even though all it entailed was taking a picture (which definitely didn't take me 20+ tries). There's something especially humanizing to see faces assigned to the names and pictures we interact with, and that's something I'm very much here for (not to in any way disparage those less comfortable with showing their face).

Hopefully we'll get to see more faces next year as well!

MGMT - Siberian Breaks
Hiroki Kikuta - Rabite Forest (Powell)

This was a really tough set; a lot of good ones, but none of them really stood out over the other. I will say that Xeno Arcadia was also close to being my pick, and I slightly considered the Touhou song, but for whatever reason I went with these two over those. It was certainly unexpected to have both SiIvagunner content and FNF-mod music in one set, that's for sure.

David Gates - Suite: Clouds and Rain
Jordan Rudess - Why I Dream

Rushed but I feel confident in my picks. Respect the Coltrane pick and Impulse was pretty solid too.

I'll confess that I certainly started creating my actual level questionably close to the deadline... so I'll try not to do that next time. But congratulations to all the winners and QORB acquirers! I'm glad to see a lot of your fun and bizarre entries get due recognition for their unique qualities. Definitely looking forward to next time we do this.
