I half-agree with this because yeah, people have their own ideas of creativity that they want to realize and should be encouraged to make, but why I say half-agree is because there are some universally objective rules to level and game design that they may be to be aware of in order for the newcomer to design their levels and their smw hack responsibly (such as tips about artificial difficulty), and should be left worded that way.

I do want to see an option to be able to visualize and preview ExAnimations before one applies the changes to the level a person is editing on.

Also +1 on the idea of the ExGFX open option to be directly accessed from LM to be opened in YY-CHR or other .bin graphic editors people use.

While I think being overly picky is not a good quality to have because you'd lose out on hidden gems and yes, judging a book by it's cover is indeed bad.

At the same time, I understand people don't have the time to play every hack out in the sun for obvious reasons and that can be justified when a lot of hacks look, feel, and play similarly to one another. If a hack doesn't meet your personal baseline on what you want out of it, don't play them or make your own that can.

As for the "Nintendo would never have used this in this way" syndrome being mentioned earlier, in all honesty while I do see Nintendo as an authority in some respects, its not the end-all, be-all because those levels that stray from that have their own creativity shining through if level designer(s) is competent at his/her/their craft.

While I share my concerns on people missing the point if they make a fully custom level instead of making a custom level that keeps the ideas and layout faithful to the original, I am however, sold on the idea of having an aesthetic reimagining of Dinosaur Land that I have to ask on how to approach the graphics considering my biggest criticism of SMW is its aesthetics not conveying the same sort of surrealism that other Mario games do more successfully with their backgrounds and tilesets due to it being a launch title.

Should we do an approach like SMWCP2 in which every graphic in the game uses user-created graphics specifically made for the collaboration or should we be not be limited to that and tolerate the use of ripped graphics from other games alongside user-created graphics submitted to the Graphics section that are free to use for any hack?

Additionally, should ever graphic that goes into this collab need to be in the same artistic style or should the collaborative nature of it be exemplifying the individual tastes, skills, and stylistic preferences of the artists in question? That is something to be more clear on about.

This is what I like to see when it comes to level design, especially for more traditional level designs. Everything that has been showcased has a purpose and how the ideas presented naturally evolves with each screen without necessarily breaking its flow. I like what I see.

Official Mario games do have a story, just not plot. The story is the mechanical process the player does fulfill such as infiltrating a castle because the level is designed for the player to do just that and the player is an active part of that. That is the reason why plot and story are actually two separate concepts that shouldn't be easily interchanged because the mechanical process of story mean that it is active and something that is determined via the skill of the player overcoming the levels in the game.

You can design a hack that has no plot and indeed hacks have gotten by well without having involved plots. But it is practically impossible to design a level without a story since playing a level, even filler ones, do convey a story through the design of the level with its aesthetic theming, the specific set of enemies and arrangement of obstacles used that the player mechanically interprets with their skill at the game on how to get from point A to B. Those levels also may double as tests of your skills if sufficiently challenging enough.

That is also why you should pay attention to the level design because if the player feels hollow after deciding to play like, 8 or so worlds you design, that isn't the fault of the level not having a plot to make you feel tense or satisfied but on you for failing to design levels to elicit the required feelings necessary for the player to feel satisfied with overcoming your challenge you designed for them to experience.

You're right, and id also extend it that its not necessarily a binary of platformers being poor at telling good plots while RPGs conversely is the best genre for that stuff. I think what people don't bring often enough in these discussions are perhaps what determines the potential for plots and id argue more than the genre mechanics is the IP in question.

For example, Sonic and Mario - both series IP have dabbled in platforming at the start and still are predominantly platformers. They had also dabbled in RPGs at some point in their history, but their similarities end here. For Mario, it has generally worked best with minimal plots such as rescuing the princess, and the fact that the characters on screen and the level design are expressed through the gameplay. That tells you everything you need to know about Mario's narrative structure since it is in service to its gameplay and reinforces what I said in my earlier post in this topic.

Sonic initially does that too with their earliest games and even with their current games at the time of this writing, but their games have gone towards more cinematic directions after 3&K as it went into the Adventure era and beyond that make the series a vehicle to tell fairly involved plots, so telling a story through its level design is downplayed as a result.

Well Gamma V's levels generally are v accessible but for me, the fact that she made many hacks with that I feel that even playing one of her hacks, is just playing them all. My opinions on that has not changed since 2018 on that.

Anyways best SMW hacks people talk about these days are the obvious JUMP and JUMP1/2 hacks, MICE, 2mice, SMW: Gaiden, Super Isikoro Mario World, R-ACK, Krack the Hack, levelengine hacks post-Bits and Pieces, and for the Kaizo side - Casio, YUMP2, any of the Morsel Kaizos, Grand Poo World 2, Quickie World hacks, Dram World hacks. I'm also anticipating Waterworld would also be up there but its too early to tell.

Hacks that were well-liked and talked about a lot in the past - SMW 2+3, Super Mario Omega, Mushroom Kingdom Meltdown series, Mario Gives Up 1 and 2, Brutal Mario, Rise to the Challenge, TSRPR, TSRP2R, The Senate, SMB3X, Il Maniero Spettrale, Anikiti's hacks from Luigi's Adventure onward.

Now for something related but I believe is still worth mentioning in this thread...up and coming SMW hacks worth paying attention to that if they ever get completed, they would potentially be seen as among the best in the community - Extra Mario World, Sicari 2, A Plumber for All Seasons, H&S Bet Revised, FS Retold, The Infinite Library

This thread consists of the next thing: you (yes, you!) give me an image that could be a background for an smw hack, and i redraw it to be used like that.

You didnt necessarily specify that the image requested is pixel art and Im not sure if this is hard for you, so I wonder if you can replicate or heavily downsample https://cloud.smwcentral.net/s/nXqCwzSp7dFAWWL/download https://cloud.smwcentral.net/s/mtFqDksf7EzyFN2/download the buildings primarily, sky cracks as layer 3 is optional. Day 1 - Reporting Ordeal's Progress since SAGE 2020 Ended.

Titlescreen by Deeke, combining the composition of two other previous titlescreens Neweegee and Kixune made for this hack.

Now for next level...

Aeolian Blood Moon - Revised by me, VLDC9 level I made with levelengine (rip) that is going to be used for the first level of the Realm of Nightmares world of Ordeal.

Skull Scale

Featuring Jack-o-Chucks by Eminus and the Blood Blargg by Sinopolis Mawboi (who also did the soulwater seen in the Blood Moon level) for the first level on the main path of Ordeal in the summit world. It's also slippery.

And lastly for now,

Fall Frolic's cutscene sequence is almost done so im showing 3 selected scenes from it. Thanks to Leg8cho (first 2), Mikeystar & Sinopolis (sketch of the forest & coloring, respectively).

Day 2 will come, and I will have more to show by then.

Day 2

I have been working on a side hack when not working on Ordeal, time to reveal what that is today.

Titlescreen graciously done by Deeke.

(note - a separate baseROM without Redrawn Mario is used for the testing and coding of this beetle).

Initially this was supposed to be a 12-level hack but I didn't have enough time to prepare any of the other assets and on account of the availability of the artists. So what you are likely to get very soon (cant say if it will be released on day 3, so no guarantees) is only the boss fight which is a little more than halfway done and tbh, that's the main dish.

Credit for this boss and the rest of assets used - anonimzwx for the coding (uses DynamicZ), Mecha Cat Boi & Skewer + amHunter for the boss graphics and its associated parts, and Kixune for the arena graphics.
