These are mostly polish updates I and Notto did this year to certain frames from the 3/4ths Redrawn Mario Bros resource. It's not a big update, and im not providing support for the 2018 Small Mario Bros. and Baby Mario Bros. or Raccoon versions seen in the Winter 2022 C3 Release because its already a lot to handle, and the update was supposed to have alternative wear but that isn't done yet.

No screenshots provided also because I regard this polish update to be a minor one. Extract the .bins that have (32) numbered to GFX32, and (0) to GFX00 respectively.

Day 3, Part 1: Recent Cutscenes for Ordeal



Spoilered because this sequence has blood in it.

Anyways what you are here for, as every C3 I do showcase progress on my main SMW Hack, October Ordeal within the period since the last one.

This is an early-game cutscene for a burning village level. You may remember that as a failed CLDC2020 contest entry that I never finished. Worry not, as it is still in development. For the sequence itself, I had Maciej (DE) revamp the cutscenes NicoBros did. Originals on the left, revamps are on the right.

These cutscene artworks are superb! And along with them, having Mario and Luigi's expressions in the dialogues is the cherry on top for those that enjoy seeing cutscenes in hacks. I'm usually indifferent about them, but in your hack I can tell they're not only really well done, but also that I wouldn't want to skip the story when the cutscenes are so conveying.

Also cool graphic releases. That's a nice font, and the update to your player graphics is very welcome. Heck, they're a big part of why I felt interested in making a hacking with SMW Redrawn as base one more time.

Thanks for the kind words, as I do appreciate the fact that there are people that do want to experience the story. I do want to make most of the cutscenes optional tho since there are people that still want to get through the levels, which is also why I am making it a point to make sure the levels themselves tell it as much as the cutscenes do explicitly.

Day 3 Part 1.5



Toad Town and Peach's Castle have their assets thanks to Kixune (Toad Town's current assets is based off of Eminus's version but expanded) are still in development because im still figuring out how to handle Dispari's NPC sprites (not WYE, still using Spritetool) and also making sure that the houses are distinct enough for the players to visit.

The sewer level is also a WIP. It has bloodwater and ON/OFF pipe switching gimmick, tho the latter can't be easily shown through the screenshots provided...so heres a streamable link from months ago - https://streamable.com/qtofkn

The very last screenshot with the Pumpkin Hills is from a hard late-game level called Notorious Notes.

Anything to do with obscuring the sight of the player because it makes it that much more easy to artificially make the difficulty harder if there is something you cannot reasonably foresaw even when cautiously playing.

That depends on the country one lives in. But where I (and probably a lot of people on this site) lives in, chances of being jailed by the government because of making a politically charged SMW hack is extremely unlikely. If you happen to be jailed because you made something politically charged, then I am almost certain it is a country that has no freedom of speech.

Anyways only two I can find so far is this one and this. Former was commenting on the coronavirus pandemic, latter has ACAB in the final world. They were not necessarily talking about political figures but did touch upon topical statements made around the time these hacks were made.

It really depends on whom and what you are making fun of, but I do think that if you are making a political hack, you do it at your own risk (and I think it isn't worth it) because it is as Koopster says, a lot of the time SMW hackers aren't competent to make a political hack because so often than not it comes off as tasteless.

Even though red is the point of your hack, I'd look into making sure that the red doesn't cause any eyestrain because right now it is because it looks saturated and there also needs to be distinction between foreground and background because of the lack of contrast with all that red being used.

Try experiment with other colors associated with hellscapes, such as brown, black, grey, and orange.

While I do like the palettes, the level feels barren, both in the decorative sense but also that there isn't much going on with the enemy placement. Theres whole swathes of nothing but white and the Wigglers look like they are easy to just jump over.

Exactly how I feel. Because its a skill issue rather than the game's design. SMWCP2 largely is very fair to people of most skill levels, dying a lot to me means you need to practice to overcome the obstacles.

You don't have to like lives but everything you said here comes off as to me as a skill issue with you as the player of the game. Obviously if you have low lives count (like say, 5 or less) in a video game, you are and probably should be playing more cautiously and that's the point, because gunning through recklessly is something that you can't really afford to do. You feel like the game wastes your time when you can't get past a hurdle that I am assuming is something that is learnable and to be overcome, which is something any fair challenge would do, and official Mario games do this well as well as the best hacks this community considers. They teach elements in a generally safe environment for you to learn and observe before moving on to applied, more dangerous situations that tests your ability.

Situations in which the player genuinely would be having their time wasted are exceptions to the norm when it comes to many well-made games and I have rightfully called a lot of them out before as artificial difficulty because of the fact in those cases, it removes player agency in the decision process of how they approached an obstacle. Stuff like not having adequate checkpointing after difficult sections, relying on RNG to find the right door combination to progress, blind falls to enemies that will hurt you regardless of state are what I mean by artificial difficulty. That isn't a problem with lives, but on inconsistencies with the rules of the level and/or game itself.

When lives are the problem, it is (mis)applied to games like brutal masocore games such as Super Meat Boy and Celeste and as well as Kaizos even though it uses SMW as a base framework, because their very gameplay design systems are built around the prospect of dying a lot with very strict and precise maneuvers with the way the stages are laid out, exploration games such as Metroid because their level design structures tend to be big, interconnected areas that would take several days to completely map out, and for flawed action-adventure games such as Zelda 2, because specifically Game Overing in Zelda 2 means having to restart progress from the beginning. Those are the times I would agree with you on lives not being a good fit for those kinds of games because their gameplay systems are not built to accommodate lives, but the rest when lives are applied to games like Mario, Mega Man, and Sonic, they work because they are responsive to control, each level does teach you something about its ideas, as well as being generally short enough to be completed in a couple of hours. I believe you should stop blaming the lives system for playing the game poorly that you and the OP have done and learn how a sprite behaves and how to carefully assess your next move when you consider approaching obstacles, because you likely are not ready for what the rest of the game has in store if you decide to thoughtlessly gun it.

Nachos and Fried Oreos does this as a SMW hack example, but that is done successfully because of careful attention to how the level design is tailored to understand the arcade-like gameplay system Mario platformers are designed for, on top of giving the player options on how they control the difficulty of the lives system based on their preference of play, which means how close you are to getting a Game Over depends on the amount of lives you start out with. That is a hack that went with the middle ground approach (because of the existence of it's Beginnger Difficulty having Infinite Lives that appeases modern game design sensibilities) while knowing its audience and intended way of playing. It is a hack that also rewards careful play and not really gunning it, which is what games that are fit for arcades and home consoles of that time expect you, the player to do.
