First Impressions so far:

I understand that you were inspired by Rise to the Challenge, Luigi's Adventure and probably a few others with regards to difficulty and ideas taken, but have you ever thought of what made those ideas seen in your inspirations work for them at a more fundamental level? Not every idea that worked for those hacks may work for your own, and the stages that I played suggested that. (To be edited later)

A non-linear overworld, nice, though I must ask that you should try emphasize the switch palace blocks more in certain worlds where the switches are to show clues where they are. Though I can also suggest in addition is that you try a "sequential rainbow" approach to it (Red -> Yellow -> Green -> Blue). Merely explaining it from a certain level doesn't do it that much justice.

Anyways, I've been playing through the unofficially-released chapter of the Devious Four Chronicles, The Crater. And I must say I'm amazed at how good this hack is so far. It is a shame it can't be released on the grounds of being incompatible with accurate emulators, because I'm already having a lot of fun playing it.

In case you're interested in my feedback on the hack, I am still doing that. You can find some of it in the link below:
Review of Worlds 1 through 3
(Visitors to this thread, be warned that there could be spoilers in there if you haven't played The Crater yet)

Due to the need to get cracking on my VLDC entry and make progress on my own hack, I probably won't be blitzing through this hack like I had done with The Fourth Sector, so don't expect too many of these reviews like before.

About those spelling errors, they can't be fixed. Scorpion lost a bunch of progress on The Crater due to a hard-drive failure, so what you're playing right now is unfortunately going to be the final version.

And yes, that Hunter fight being different with some answers was intentional. You're not supposed to make him angry when answering his questions, or else you'll have a harder time beating him.

To be honest, he can still point out any spelling and grammatical errors as he wishes. Reviews do also serve a purpose to make sure that the authors strive to prevent repeating past mistakes, not just bringing mistakes made to be fixed currently. Though I do wish that the hack authors have not given up on such a great piece of work they created.

Note to Mods: The old thread has an inactive OP who retired from the development team.

Now then, Super Mario World: All-Star Edition is a Game Maker 8 fangame started by ~CaMtEnDo~ on October 31st, 2010 with the help of his friend and now lead developer, Mikeystar. It was and still is a very ambitious project. I, StrikeForcer, am one of the primary stage designers for the project and the only other active developer as of this post.

Brief History: The game started off as Mario and Luigi going through the classic plot of saving
Princess Peach by going through eight long worlds that is rather formulaic. I have introduced a newer plot in 2012 that is accepted in order to break the norm of the traditional excuse plots the Mario series has produced. The team known as The SMWASE Team produced a lot of concepts and plots over the years, some of them surviving to this day. The team has even put in ideas that is not seen
in this demo, which includes concepts inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, various Super Nintendo games, the Mega Man franchise, Wario Land games, the Yoshi's Island games and much other new concepts that will appear in future demos.

The Problem: According to Mikeystar: "Unfortunately, the ambition of this project was like water overfilling a cup, too much capacity and not enough space. With the common case of losing members,
ASE was in dire of major help and contributions of members from their home base, the Super Mario World ASE Reactor. As a result, ASE can only be demonstrated
until more help arrives then. Even the founder of the fangame has left for reality reasons, and Mikeystar is now completely in charge of the fangame up-to-fate.

This fangame has been known for years, but many believe it has diminished since 2012. Well, turns out they didn't know the huge surprise that I'm unveiling to many as of now.

There are step-by-step instructions as to what to do to make sure that the demo is working properly, but it is simply by extracting files."

We need all the help we can get in order to realize this game's completion.

World List: This demo consists of 18 stages and 9 worlds, though it is not as big because we have quite a lot of levels that need to be created.

World 1 (Minty Plains, Grassland)
World 2 (Djanet Dunes, Desert, Sand Canyon)
World 3 (Overswell Ocean, Beach, Coastline)
World 4 (Yoshi's Island, Various,)
World 5 (Aerate Altitudes, Canyon, Sky)
World 6 (Gelide Glacier, Snowland, Mountain, Iceberg and Ocean)
World 7 (Bowser's Industries, Industry, Urban, Casino)
World 8 (Koopa Core, Darkland)
World 9 (Stardust Route, Space, Various)"

How about just making crystals just jutting out from a void (as in, making the crystals have a fade-in effect) as a fitting background rather than having none at all.

Also a question. Will there be 1 new level for Crystal Mountain? I find it to be one of those worlds that could use an expansion of its theme.

StanTheMackiar, those are quite the tiles you got there though I agree with the others that the dithering of the large hills makes your graphic stand out not in a good way with regards to a lack of texture in your other tiles. And try to respond with less hostility when others are giving your critique.

Hinalyte, those are some snowy/peppermint graphics you got there though there are a few improvements to be made. The darkest green of the snowy tree could be darker to give it a higher contrast. As for your snow tiles that look like a bump that differentiates flat ground, get rid of the banding of the shades of blue, not to mention that pillowshading is generally frowned upon among pixel artists. Also, I would suggest having the outline of the ice tiles be black.

I agree with Ultimaximus's post in the 2010 thread because we fans do not have to stick with Nintendo's defintions regarding their creations if we want to fufill our dreams of making our own fangame/SMW hack. Why should anyone be expected by others to make sure our take on Nintendo's characters should be in line with their formula? (Tl;DR: Fans can deviate from the established norm and there should be no shame in that.)

Its also the reason why I do not mind cursing being in a fangame/SMW hack but I am aware that the mood on what you are going for has to have its appropriate dialogue that fits. I wouldn't recommend having the characters you choose to have swear for the hell of it or if it doesn't compliment the mood.

Somehow, I wonder if the people who designed these overworlds signed up for people picking parts of their submaps to be included in the winner's entry (at the time of this post, its Entry 17 although it can very much be applied to 3 if it overtakes 17) that may be in the final product. I didn't find it to be fair regarding the various users having opinions of the best/worst world submaps of the winning entry be substituted since I assume that (and im certain that I assume correctly) that the contest is all or nothing and that the contestants didn't sign up for their submaps being selectively applied for the final product, which its fucking antithetical to the nature of this contest. Its like you are being penalized for not following an unwritten criterion.

In response to SNN's post above my own, I would definitely agree that the winning entry could improve on the best/worst submaps but I am curious to ask if there can be some sort of collaboration with the runner-up and person currently in third place (to whom it may be concerned since the people are anonymous) as to how the redesign of said best/worst world submaps could work out?

Also, the term has been ruined by #gamergate who constantly used it to mean "anyone who is even sightly progressive" (which, since #gamergate managed to get mainstream attention, became a joke on twitter).

I apologize for not responding earlier but Bio, you (and leod) are quite misguided, just because a dictionary says what the definition of the name of the ideological movement is does not mitigate the actions people in that movement have done in the name of feminism. And what I have learned from last year is that feminism currently is privileging women and their rights over men and their rights and they are perpetualizing social myths with their institutional oppression of their opposition (and that includes people and organizations that have contradictory evidence to the bullshit indoctrination feminists spew) though various liberal platforms, both mainstream and alternative available to feminists to voice their message. It is for that reason why they are institutionally making it hard for everyone else currently.

This is one of the few times I agree with MercuryPenny, but I have an additional suggestion. If you can make the hitable coin blocks, bill blaster skulls, and enemies show their whites, it would make their recognition easier to discern from the ground.

I still remember that suggestion topic Gamma V made regarding for the current hack section. I find it to be a fitting alternative to the whole ice cream flavored classification so engrained in this culture as it offers a more objective approach of what this hack is. Why don't people use that as a guideline for classifying their hacks?

...Though I do see the point of using the ice cream flavor classification as a personal means of either restricting or going all out.

As Torchkas said: "There is no copyright on ports. I get that you like the stuff that you've made, but they're not impenetrable to disassembly."

With that, I am going to say this: You will always have someone who would abuse the tools given to them for their own personal gain, and you cannot really stop the activity, only discourage, and those should be punished for violating others' integrity. Restricting the tool to a chosen few...what I see is basically that of what DRM does: Preventing you from doing what would be possible without it just because someone dictates what you can do with your product.

However, I see the pros to be outweighing the cons. I see this tool to be useful for obtaining lost ports a hacker has created who may want to touch up on his port. I also see it to be beneficial as a tool to preserve old ports that were previously available to the public and that it can make the workload of fixing broken hacks that are still in the hacks section slightly easier.

It is why I would like to see this tool released...

Spinjumper, that looks quite nice aesthetically in spite of the color monotony with the foreground and background, and its a good thing that you are going make that segment short, since I agree with Lazy's suggestion on the shake being disorienting.

Centipede, there could be a much better way of conveying a distinction between a solid and foreground decoration on the second pic. (the starry sky pic) since making buildings with SMW's wooden log tiles looks horrendous IMHO.

Hello everyone, StrikeForcer here to bring you some good news!

Preface: First off, Super Mario World: All-Star Edition received a name change by Mikeystar (project head)
to "Super Mario: All-Star Attack!" to reflect the maturation phase this fan-game is undergoing. We have come a long way since 5 years ago with an ever-evolving game with a clear sense of direction.

Secondly, some of you may remember out first demo, released on Mario Fan Games Galaxy (MFGG) on Oct 26, 2014 and was later
exhibited on the Nintendo Community Fangame Convention (NCFC) days later. Unfortunately, the 18 levels featured in the first demo
were not a reflection of our true vision for this game. Over the course of 7-8 months, we have made extensive updates to the game in order to provide a fuller experience with this demo.

What does this demo feature?
- 50 Levels, which has the entirety of World 1 complete along with various levels added on to later worlds.
- Addition of Luigi as a playable character.
- Updated additions to music, modifications to old stages, and many glitch fixes.
- Updated Graphics thanks to the efforts of Geoshi, Karate Cat, Mikeystar, and Neweegee.
- Achievements such as stamps to be unlocked, as well as a level list, all located in the DMG Screen of the World Map.

World Order:
~ World 1 (Minty Plains, Grassland)
~ World 2 (Djanet Dunes, Desert, Sand Canyon)
~ World 3 (Overswell Ocean, Beach, Waterfall)
~ World 4 (Yoshi's Island, Various, Jungle)
~ World 5 (Windswept Canyon / Aerate Altitudes, Badlands, Sky)
~ World 6 (Gelide Glacier, Snowland, Mountain, Iceberg and Ocean)
~ World 7 (Bowser's Industries, Industry, Urban, Casino)
~ World 8 (Koopa Core, Forest, Darkland)
~ World 9 (Stardust Route, Space, Various)

(Same as above, make sure you downloaded the original SM: ASA file download first and extract it, as this fixes issues the first correction didnt)

MAJOR UPDATE: You no longer need to download the two corrections I made as Mikeystar (hopefully) made a major correction regarding progression. See this: http://smwc.me/1223760

And now, a word from Mikeystar:

"I would like to apologize for the various forms of glitches that has appeared during the first demo. The first demo was a hard start: Having to get the transition
between worlds was a challenge while getting the levels able to be completed without a problem. I did not like how much effort I put in to the programming, only to
realize the slightest of glitches can be the downfall of being unable to complete the last demo, including the frequent crashing due to FMOD Sound usage for Windows 8
Users including myself. I am glad to note that I fixed the majority of those problems for this upcoming demo, not to mention having a new playable character, Luigi!
Finally, the Mario Bros. are united!
But, due to all of this hardwork and effort to make a well polished fan-game, I believe I will be signing off of this project. The five years have been very hard for me:
Working constantly, daily, to get this game done, has been sometimes a chore and most times a passion. Times go far back when CaMtEnDo made his first debut about the
announcement of this fan-game.
If there are any questions you would like to ask, contact me, Mikeystar, on Mario Fangames Galaxy or YouTube. Feel free to ask me questions.
As for glitch fixes, I will not be up for fixing any glitches (unless it's assigned for special purposes such as livestreaming). If there are glitches that seem uncanny, whoopsie. Other than that, enjoy the last of my fan-game works before
I resign out of fan-gaming for a long time." ~ Mikeystar Skors

Closing Statements: Without further ado, go ahead and play this game! Any other information is clarified by the game information inside the executable. If you would like to livestream this game, do a playthrough, or an LP, you are free to do so, though for LP'ers and livestreamers, it is preferred that you contact either me or Mikeystar on what times you want to play this game so that we
can comment on and possibly may address problems to the best of our ability you may come across. I specialize in dealing with level design problems so you have a problem with a level, feel free to notify me. Bug-releated problems should go to Mikeystar.

How to Contact Us: I, StrikeForcer can be reached on SMWCentral, MFGG (as DarkSideStrike), SMBX.org, YouTube, and the SMWASE Reactor.
