Besides the basics of Lunar Magic, most of the more advanced stuff has to be read from the tutorials section.
It's usually better explained in there than with a quick forum answer. Lots of those very well documented tutorials were made by people
who kept answering and seeing the same questions in these forums, which is why you don't see many questions about those anymore.
Use this emulator if you don't know which to use, I love it:

Check the tool section, these are the main ones to learn if you want to go further than Lunar Magic:
Floating IPS (Flips) v1.31: used to create and apply IPS patches.
GPS V1.4.4 Gopher Popcorn Stew

PIXI v1.40 Sprite Insertion Tool
UberASM Tool 1.6 ASM patch inserter for different types of patches
Asar v1.81 ASM patch inserter
Knowing the basics of programming is really good. Plenty videos about that on youtube.
If you ever go that way, learning through Javascript or Python could easily get you a job later.
The internet can be better than college to learn code.
Learn to use Notepad++ and the basics like what are integers, Binary and Hexadecimal numbers , Functions, Objects, Classes.
Learn to use a programming calculator. It's all a youtube search away and there is plenty around for anything not exactly about SMW.
I can give you inspiration for what to search for, then you have to do all the work.
That's the way it has been from the start around here, which makes the hacks something to really appreciate.
It is art, the expression of your skill and effort. I am a visual learner as well and I know your curiosity could push you beyond the basics.
If you want to be lazy, don't be shy, this doesn't need to be your life.
If its the case, use a baserom and learn to insert sprites and use the 16x16 editor in LM and you'll be good.
ROM Hacking isn't always easy unless you stick to the basics.
A lot can go wrong, so it's good to understand the basics of how systems work to speed up your learning process.
Also, Lunar Magic is pretty much perfect and plenty can be done just in there!
