Hey,

I just watched your demo video. Your level looks pretty fun. My only comment is, going along the top of the level seems easier than what I can see of the bottom (ledges with tons of goombas and troopas?) - nothing is really keeping the player from just running along the top of the level. What is that music from? Very cool. Good luck with your ongoing work!

While we're talking about sprite stuff - does your sprite number need to match the ExGFX number of its graphics?

What's the max number of custom sprites that can be added using Sprite Tool?

Cool - with my other question, though, does the sprite number need to match the ExGFX number that contains its graphics? Like, if I want to add a stompable goomba, should I make it sprite 80 and then put the matching ExGFX into slot 80?

Try this - start with your "clean" ROM. Go to file, then click on insert ExGFX. Then, click on the mushroom. At the top of the window will be where you can insert ExGFX for objects and background. At the bottom is where you do it for sprites. Each sprite should only go in the correct slot (SP 1-4) and you can tell which by looking at the SP number on the bin file in Sprite Tool's tilemaps folder.

I know there is a Sidestepper (crab) sprite in Sprite Tool, but are there any ExGFX for it? I didn't see any.

I have actually been wondering about how this hack was going, mainly because of your inclusion of the Shadow Mario character. How did you pull that off? I don't really get how you make it move.

Overall, I like the basic ideas behind your level design, but the first level seems pretty enemy-heavy and busy for a Level 1-1, but that's just me. If you're going for something harder, then it makes sense.

What is the "squash" custom sprite cfg file in Sprite Tool?

Also, which is better to use - regular piranha plants, or HDMA-friendly ones? I really don't know the difference.
