So I started this hack a couple of years ago, but got sidetracked by life and stopped working on it. Its not that long, about 16 levels and is mostly vanilla. Though there are a few custom blocks later on. The hack is supposed to be hard, but I'm trying to avoid Kaizo Unfairness. One of the things that makes the levels hard is their dependance on irregular movement mechanics. I thought I'd show video's of the levels to get your feedback on if it is too hard.

The first level uses Coin trains, a difficult mechanic, but is very forgiving. It's called the Train Station and has two exits.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cppav3rT4SY&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cppav3rT4SY&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The third level uses Flying Yoshi. It's the last level without any powerups. It's called Berry Bullet Fields:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AKLOCyNe-co&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AKLOCyNe-co&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The fifth level uses Item Juggling. It's the first really hard level, I should probably make it easier. It has two exists and is called Juggelr's Dungeon:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/daev5VEMl40&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/daev5VEMl40&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The sixth level uses autoscroll to shoot lava at mario, and then has a few puzzles using -L- and -R-. I should probably put one more -L- -R- puzzle in there. It's called Look Out! Mountain.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Kv9fmRM9-hA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Kv9fmRM9-hA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The eighth level is pretty hard. It relies on Noteblock mechanics, and the cape. It's called: The Old Well:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SqwR0SYDgvs&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SqwR0SYDgvs&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The 10th level uses strong winds to make usually easy tasks very difficult. It's called Downhill From Here:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MucdNPmfSrI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MucdNPmfSrI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The 12th level uses layer 3 tides, and layer 2 smashes in a relatively uncommon way. It's called SeaSide Property and has two exits. I think I have to make the fight with Wendy Easier, considering how in the video I have to load state like 20 times:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qKnQtizJOvc&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qKnQtizJOvc&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The second to last level is Kaizo Hard, and the last level is just Kaizo mean. They open up after you beat K.B. So they really are just challenges for the masochistic. If you do beat them you will gain access to a couple of mini-games though. Like Save The Chuck:

There's no reward for winning the minigame by getting chuck to the end, its just a fun challenge. So please let me know what you guys think of what I've shown you.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/u7hFFTlGyA4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/u7hFFTlGyA4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

You actually can't, it's blocked off by invisible impassable blocks.

Probably a bit easy for all of your tastes, but maybe a bit hard for everyone elses.

Thanks for all the positive feedback and constructive criticism Sister of the Night =D

Your idea for the end of the minigame is perfect! I forgot that Chuck could bust through turnblocks. So a special thanks for that!

And I'm glad people like the "Kaizo Trap" in the wind level ^^

1:26 Goom Trail - Above the yoshi coin, the chomper is floating! It has a vine, but hey, the vine is floating too...

Also, It might look better if you change the Muncher Pallet so that its leaves are green. This should help alleviate the problem that Doomiok brings up. Even though they are on vines, the munchers still look slightly out of place.

I'm working with the single level restart patch by klazen.
I'd like to change it so that when you die instead of going to the start of the level from the overworld, you go to the start of the room you are in.

$7E:13BF holds the translevel # (the first room of the current level)

What holds the level number of the room you are in?

Here's mine so far, I'm not sure I'm done with it yet. I think everyone should post pics, because downloading all the entries and looking at them through LM is kind of tedious.

Is it just me or does using a variety of solid coloured blocks remove some of the magic from this?

IMO it does, however one of the categories explicitly deducts points if you stick to just one type of block colored differently. So it should work out in the end.

why did you delete iggy's platform? It doesn't make sense since you can still walk on it.

Update of my entry:

Im really happy with the 1st and 3rd panels, but the 2nd panel kind of disappointed me on how it turned out. I might retry it before submitting it. (Also yoshi still needs his spikes!)

@Lespna1: You forgot the M in SMW!

Also you picked tiles with a background for the "corners" of your trees and sun. I'm pretty sure you could swap those out for curves without that background and it would look a little bit nicer. But overall its not too shabby. I especially like how you made a Key out of Keys. Maybe you could do that with other objects as well.

Finished my entry! I think it turned out really well. Please view in "special world passed" mode.

I LOL'ed at this.

Seconded, this is hilarious! By far my favorite so far.

It wasn't actually too bad. There are a few issues though.

1) People are generally opposed to having to move when the level opens. (I think its cause they hit the speed up button when entering a level to avoid long Level start screens). So move the level to the right one screen and just have 1 empty (or decorated) screen (have new ground of course).

2) The 3 bullet bill trap was kind of a dick move since there was a muncher there

3) right after the bullet bill trap, the jump onto multiple turtles is bad. The screen doesn't follow you so you cant see where you are. Also, on one of my play throughs of the level, the third turtle did not load, so I had to land on the muncher and take a hit or fall to my death.

There wasn't any invisible coin block abuse that I ran into in the level, keep it that way.

Before you design too many more levels, download block tool. Changing graphics can be a lot of work so most first time hackers dont do it. But block tool is easy to use, makes you stand out, and gives you a lot of options for level design.

OK, here are the things wrong with this level:

1) It's Kaizo-ish (at least in my opinion), as in:

I have no clue on how to jump on the ?-block.

This trap was actually either brilliant, or stupid. I dont think you can jump to get the ? block. I think you have to get it with a turtle shell.

That's just not fair.

2) When Bullet Bills don't come out from Bill Blasters, they don't make the sound when they come out of the Bill Blasters (no, that's not an emulator issue).

great music choice on that level

I would argue that trees that are not climbable are unintuitive...
