I must say, after LPing most of this hack for YouTube (I'm just starting the Special Stages), I'm glad to see that a lot of the little issues are being fixed, especially the slowdown in some of the levels.

I'll also say that you have definitely achieved your goal of making this hack "Lost Levels style" - the first couple of worlds aren't too hard, but once you enter Forest of Illusion, it gets REAL challenging.

Oh, and I LOVE Forest of Illusion 4 and the whole "Four Seasons" set-up (or is that FoI 3? I can never remember what order those levels are in).

Keep up the great work!

@ The Heavenly Haunter: That level looks really good, but I do agree with Mario616; some of the sprites do clash a little bit with the palette, but at the same time, I really like the volcano palette, so I say if you do change it at all, make it just a tad brighter, but not much.

Also, the background animates? I'd really like to see that in action.

@ Mario616: For just being an alpha OW, I actually like it a lot. I'm not sure about Bowser's castle being in an ice world though; it just seems out of place for some reason.

There's also way too many levels between those two castles on the main grassland (in my opinion) - perhaps a fortress somewhere in the middle or something would help break the world up a bit.

In terms of nostalgia, I'll take Super Mario Bros 1 and 3, Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island more because they were the games I grew up playing.

As for since then, I've always liked the music selections for Gran Turismo 1 and 2 for the PS1 - they were the first games I ever played that featured actual songs, even though I'd never heard any of them before.

@ Deathikku: Okay, now THAT was creative - I really like the deception tactic used there - I wouldn't have known that was an enemy if you hadn't said it was.

@ Phantasm: While I don't profess to be an expert at what makes a good ground tile, I actually like this one - the whole "3-D" effect really makes it look different.

@ The Dreaded @9: Wow, another awesome custom boss - it's always refreshing to see bosses and/or mini-bosses that are different than the same ol' Koopa Kids and Reznor.

@ DragonGhost6780: I like those OW graphics - I'm assuming they're based on the Redrawn graphics, as they do look a bit similar, but they still look really good.

@ K3Boo64: Not bad, but I did notice that the vine seemed to cut-off at the top when you entered the next room at 1:33.

I like this idea, so here goes:

My favorite game of the Mario series (and my, are there lots to choose from) would be Super Mario Bros 3, just because of how awesome it was when I first played it as a kid.

My favorite game of the Crash Bandicoot series is Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back - it was the first game I ever played on the PS1, and the first PS1 game I got 100% on.

@ TRS: I really, really, REALLY like that cave palette - the contrast between the FG and BG really creates the illusion that the lava is glowing - something it would actually do in a cave.

The underwater palette is pretty good too, but I guess I'd have to see it in an underwater level to really see it in action.

@ The Eerie Experiment: That winter palette is cool - I especially like how it makes Rex look all frosty.

Long reply coming up, so here goes:

@ Monster: That is a really nice bonus game - I actually can't recall too many instances where someone actually changed the game itself, so that deserves some serious props.

@ Boonama: I like that level a lot - the custom sprites especially look good. The only question I have is: considering that you've edited so many aspects of the game, do you plan on editing the sprites of everything that was still unedited in the video (Pokey, Lava Lotus, etc.)?

@ Richard Dawkins: Very solid tank level - I don't know about anyone else, but I really enjoy hacks done in the SMB3 style, so this one really interested me.

@ Potato Lantern: So Tron has come to Super Mario World huh? In all seriousness though, that's definitely a unique palette. I know you were just showing off the palette, but that incorrect corner tile in the second shot really stands out.....just saying ;D

Oh there's got to be a billion possible choices for best classic arcade game. Some that come to my mind are:

-Donkey Kong (I know it's been said twice already)
-Mario Bros
-Pac Man
-Space Invaders
-Frogger

@ Potato Lantern: In the second screenshot, on the platform that the Koopa shell is sitting on (the one you point to and say "ignore palette"), there is an incorrect corner tile - it doesn't appear to attach to the BG trees at all, hence the reason I noted it.

@ GRIM: That's a nice looking OW - the Bob-Ombs (I'm assuming that's what those things are on the island) are a nice touch.

@ RedBooLonk: Yeah, you're right, I just realized that what I was seeing was one of the spots on the BG trees....way to sound like an utter noob Amp *slaps self*

EDIT to Potato Lantern: Yeah, never mind - I was just seeing things. Sorry if I confused you....which it sounds like I did, A LOT.

Anyway, that level is really good too. For the life of me I can't remember exactly where that music is from - I think it's from Paper Mario but I'm not too sure.

@ 1UPdudes: Those ghost sprites are really cool - they look a lot more like disembodied heads now, compared to just a round blob with a face.

Your OW is also off to a really good start - as you said, it's just a beta so I won't say anything about the Ghost House in the middle of the water.....unless it's on purpose.

@ skedar: Nice castle level! The status bar palette may need a bit of work though - and you may want to add another 100 to the clock since you almost ran out of time yourself, and a new player to your hack may want to explore a little more. Otherwise, really nice job :D

That balloon game idea was really cool. The only thing I noticed, and it may have just been because I was watching it and not actually playing it, was that the controls for Mario in that game seemed really jerky and stiff, as if pushing the button moved him, and releasing the button stopped him on the spot. A little maneuverability would be nice for a puzzle like this, but that's just an observation, not a recommendation.

That looks real good Foursword - The docks especially give that tileset a real "Maritime" look, and it's way better than the same ol' Super Mario World bridges that seem to be in every hack at least once.

Wow! That OW looks fantastic - the paths look like something you'd see in an RPG almost. The only thing I noticed was there was no entrances to any sub-maps (pipes, cave entrance, etc.), so are you just going to be using the warp stars to get to/from the sub-maps, or are there going to be sub-maps at all?

*sigh* I've gotta stop getting so far behind...

@ Blaze.666: Other than the slight graphical issues noted by TRS, not too bad of an OW - the only thing I could suggest is to add some variety to some areas instead of it all being grassland.

@ MidiGuy: Awesome boss battle! The status bar palette needs a little bit of work, but other than that, this is a great custom boss (and I love to see custom bosses over the same ol' Koopa Kids).

@ Witch's Brue: I see where you're trying to go with this level, but I don't think this type of level works too well when remade in SMW. It's pretty much flat, linear, plus it's quite short. Like I said, I understand the concept, but I don't think it works in this case (just my honest opinion though).

The one sequel I have wanted to see for ages, as well as many others, is a true "Donkey Kong Country 4". Don't get me wrong - 64 was cool, but it wasn't really the DK that I remembered. I'd like a game that goes back to the basics of DKC - bonus barrels, themed worlds, incredible soundtracks (64's was weak in my opinion), and a secret world. DKC 1/2/3 also managed to pull off a clever gimmick in every single level (which became extremely apparent in 3), so if we could see a 4th game that does that .. well, I would be pretty happy.

I totally agree. While DK64 had its mystique about it, there was too much to do and collect to get 100% on it (I still haven't done it after all these years). DKC1, 2, and 3 all had basically the same premise: find all the bonuses and beat all the levels, period, enough said. I would love to see a Donkey Kong Country 4 come out (if not for the Wii, at least put it on the DS) - I'd buy it.

Pretty cool level Monster! The Yoshi's Island bushes really give a touch of scenery to the whole thing.

@ Phantasm: I like that tileset. I have to disagree with Monster since pyramids were made from nothing but blocks anyway - if anything, maybe make them rectangular like the ceiling tiles, but otherwise it looks fine.

One question though - does it take a while to load like other temple/pyramid levels in other hacks, or were you able to avoid that?

10) New Super Mario Bros
9) Super Mario 64
8) Super Mario All-Stars
7) Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
6) Mario Party 2
5) Paper Mario
4) Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
3) Super Mario Bros 1 (NES version)
2) Super Mario World
1) Super Mario Bros 3 (NES version)

I'll also throw an Honorable Mention to Mario Kart 64, the Super Mario Advance series (even though they're just GBA ports of the old classics), and Yoshi's Island DS (I don't think it's anywhere near as good as the original, but it's better than a lot of people say it is).

Actually, while we're talking about glitches, I also found one in the same level DoosaiWolf did. For some reason, you can jump THROUGH the block containing the 1-Up (the one sitting over some rising/falling mushroom platforms).

Other than that, this was a really well done hack - I've been following this thread from the beginning myself, and was quite impressed with how well this ended up. It was a shame that once you beat 4 W-4, nothing else happened, but it was still REALLY good :D

EDIT: Wow, and I thought the emoticons on Ustream were creepy...j/k
