Just reminding the interested in being SM64 Helpers: the applications deadline is next Thursday (one week). Anyone that would like to help us improving the SM64 Sections is more than welcome to try for a spot in the team.

A straightforward way I could think: NPC Sprites. Surely you won't use them for the messages, but for their movements. Could be a nice alternative to you if exploited correctly.

In accord to the announcement I made last week, I hereby state that the applications for SM64 Helpers are closed for now. Stay tuned, however, since we may open them again depending on the site's needs.

Moved to the SMW Hacking Help forum (which is more appropriate).

You can always use SNESGFX, found here. While it accepts generally any image size, it is recommended you use up to 512x512. The real limit, however, are the colors: up to 256 in Mode 7, for example, and try to limit to 16-48 colors in other cases.

EDIT: I may warn you, though: I know we are in the ExGFX contest period. Do not submit ripped graphics to the contest, as they will be disqualified. You have been warned.

Dude, 4bpp means 4 bits per plane. In short, whenever you use an image, it is better that you use only 16 colors, in order to take an entire palette row for SMW. If you use more, you'll need more palette rows; but SNESGFX pretty much handles it nicely to you.
