Just so we are on the same page, this is the P-Switch I'm talking about:

It is also possible to press it:

The state of the P-Switch is saved, the code looks somewhat like this:

Code
$('<div>')
	.css({
		width: '16px',
		height: '16px',
		position: 'relative',
		zIndex: '1',
		margin: '-11px 0 -5px auto',
		backgroundImage: 'url(\'/images/pswitch.gif\')',
		backgroundPosition: pswitchPressed ? '-16px 0' : '0 0'
	})
	.click(function() {
		if(pswitchPressed) {
			$(this).css('backgroundPosition', '0 0');
			pswitchPressed = 0;
		}
		else {
			$(this).css('backgroundPosition', '-16px 0')
			pswitchPressed = 1;
		}
		$.post('/ajax.php?a=pswitch', { pressed: pswitchPressed });
	})
	.appendTo('#mainmenu');

Essentially, clicking the P-Switch changes its displayed graphics and informs the SMW Central server about the new state.

But does it do more than this? Well, it could, and as the thread title says, I managed to solve the mystery.

"But how", you may ask. Very well. First of, I performed backwards long jump into the Staff forum. Unfortunately, there was nothing about that P-Switch here. So suspicious... guess it won't be that easy to find, and only SMW Central programmers know what does it do. Considering there are what, two of those, getting that information ain't going to be easy.

But maybe it's in a Parallel Universe (PU)...

So I gained speed for 12 hours, went to a Staff Room in a parallel universe, and it turned out there were no sprites here. How useless...

My next idea involved stunning a Blue Koopa.

But it turns out that stunning a sliding Blue Koopa is only useful if you want to beat a level, not if you want to figure out what a P-Switch does. I probably could use power-up increment to execute arbitrary code, but juggling with shells into very specific positions doesn't sound like fun. That said, there is a game where arbitrary code execution is easier. First generation Pokemon games, that is. Now, you could point out that using a memory editor is easier... and it is easier, but I don't care.

Using the following set-up
  • (Any Item) x Any
  • (Any Item) x Any
  • Lemonade x 21
  • TM34 x 89
  • Awakening x 28
  • TM40 x 64
  • TM30 x 127
  • TM24 x 64
  • Hyper Potion x 11
  • Potion x 3
  • Fake PP Up x A4
  • Lemonade x 69
  • ????? (Surfboard) x E9
  • HM01 x 1
  • 10F x 10
  • Battle Style x G6
  • RIVAL x 33
  • Coin x 99
  • Lazy x Vamperumbra
  • Coin x 99
  • P-Switch x 1
  • Cascadebadge x 77
  • Trade complete x 12
  • TM54 x 54
  • Super Potion x Potion
  • Potion x Any
We can hack into SMW Central's code and find a mysterious ROM. It doesn't seem particularly important however, let's ignore it. I did convert it to a patch, just so nobody would complain I upload ROMs to SMW Central, because first: that's rude, second: that's copyrighted material and that's big no-no.

There was another thing of interest however, a forum:

Now, I know enough to not press fake big download buttons, they are actually viruses and surveys. So I ignored the threads about P-Switches and went to "Developers' Bar & Grill". The first post here was written by an user called P-Switch (user ID -341).

Lemonade x21 translates to ld a,$15 - so far so good. TM34 x89 followed by an Awakening is ld ($590E),a. The 28 translates to inc e. A TM11 is an invalid opcode. Busted.

But what if he was playing on 3DS Virtual Console?

My mistake, fixed a small error in my setup, now it should be better.

This is newer game, but hopefully that's fine?

very fun aesthetic! not much else to go off of from there. i'm guessing it's gbc themed? looks kinda tower of heaven-y though more than anything.

also please don't abuse the poll functionality in this way. a shitpost is a shitpost, no matter the form.

Yeah, this level is very heavily inspired by Tower of Heaven. Interestingly, Tower of Heaven only uses three colors, not four colors like Game Boy (which I only noticed while trying to make this level).

I'll put more screenshots when I will actually have something to show.

EDIT:

Figured out how to change the frame color in message boxes.

I'm not sure whether this is the right contest for troll variations of SMB1 1-1.

Is there a reason why custom music is limited to up to 4 tracks?

It's not that you can use more anyways because you are restricted to 4 levels.

i hate storks, morsel, you are the worst, supporting this nomination

it's very different to a typical Kaizo ROM hack, there are no traps like invisible coin blocks, no glitch abuse, just ridiculous difficulty

one criticism of this rom hack i have is that with the exception for the final level, levels don't have names, how are you supposed to refer to them? just a number... that's boring

sure, oreos is great

the levels are really well designed, it's very hard, but in a fair way if that makes sense, i'm not sure how i feel about the gaming-over system, i guess it encourages careful gameplay and not stupidly losing lives, but other than that, i loved the hack

You could have avoided forced deaths by using screen-side exit, but I assume it would be confusing, so it's probably for the better.

If anyone has Super NT, and managed to beat World 5 or experienced crashes, can you tell whether you have experienced crashes and what firmware version of Super NT do you have? That would be appreciated, as there were multiple reports of crashes happening with Super NT specifically, mostly during World 5 Reznor fight, but could really happen anywhere.

Specifically, JUMP Team wants to know whether to report the bug to upstream or tell people to update Super NT before playing JUMP 1/2.

Visit your own profile (the link after "Logged in as" in header), and check "Last activity" section. It will incorrectly display "( ago)". Note that if it says "(1 seconds ago)", refresh the page, likely the page was visited near the end of a second.

Trying to download https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=17982 redirects me back to the hack page.

My guess is that it's caused by age cookie not being set on dl.smwcentral.net

The set-cookie HTTP header looks like this:

Code
set-cookie: age=1; expires=Sun, 15-Mar-2020 18:12:32 GMT; Max-Age=259200; path=/; domain=.www.smwcentral.net; secure; HttpOnly

dl.smwcentral.net is not a subdomain of www.smwcentral.net, so this doesn't work.

Alpha
studiopolis1 (disappointed there is no voice acting, but I mean, it's SNES, and I think the track is still alright without it, section at 0:24 seems somehow off to me)
oboro
Route 113
remix_9
Dive
gourmetrace
Operation 2
kyushu
cosmicangel
test29
Splash Hill Zone 1
mm2gb_title (I like the original version better, and Mega Man II GB had a quite bad soundtrack with its pitch issues)
PokeFlute v2 (imo bad choice of track to port)
Pyramid (Mega Man II (GB) style pitch issues, I think it could have been great)
72ho6_staircase_whip (uhm...)

supporting so 2 mice walk into a bar and slurdgery. i'm not sure what could I add, but those ROM hacks are good.

yoshi's strange quest... i'm not sure, honestly this rom hack is trying to be brutal mario in terms of asm, but i think that's all it has going for it, the level design is meh, personally i'm opposed to that one. really good asm showcase tho.

super wakana land, yeah, no, opposed towards it being featured... do we really want to feature a hack with attempted rape as part of its plot, even ignoring its boring level design

i'm not too familiar with kaizo hacks, so i won't be voting on baby kaizo world and garlic
