Description: | Previously known as Super Mario Bros. DX, this is an upgraded version made to work on modern emulators, and has a few audio problems fixed. There is little to no change in gameplay, so if you've played this hack before, there's not much new for you. This is a remake of the classic Super Mario Bros. in the SMW engine using SMB3 graphics. There are also two new worlds for you to explore. |

World has my favorite control scheme of the 2D Mario games, and having that applied to Bros. 1 makes for something that I found a lot more fun to play than the original. The levels are pretty faithfully re-created. No real big changes level layout wise and everything is laid out exactly like the original. I had no idea until semi-recently that Pac even went through the trouble of recreating the Minus World glitch! It's a really rad attention to detail.
The new Worlds are a pretty neat novelty as well utilizing elements from World, so you can do some pretty fun cheatsy stuff you couldn't do in Bros. 1 like having Yoshi. It's broken to bits in terms of balancing, but a fun reward for clearing the original 8 Worlds and feels like it better warrants the use of World as a base (instead of limiting the player to just the mechanics/features Bros. 1 had).
The Bros. 3 visual aesthetic is also really nice. I personally found it the nicest looking of all the facelifts that All-Stars received and it gives it a more visually unique identity than just re-using the Bros. 1 side of the game. The visual variety feels a lot more plentiful here.
Really the biggest thing holding it back are some limitations from the time when ASM hacking was a lot less common for Mario World ROM hacks. The Bowser fights are reskinned Bowser Statues, the 'looping' effect in the later castles is absent, no longer fireball chains, and the Warp Zone sadly defaults to the highest possible World choice rather than letting you select some previous worlds.
It's still a very fun romp since Bros. 1 is still a well-designed game at it's core. However, certain things being absent and the much easier difficulty might come as an unfortunate drawback for some. If you want an easy-going hack, just want to see Bros. 1 with Bros. 3 assets, or kinda want to cheat Bros. 1's level design with some of the new features, then there's still a fun half hour to kill here!
Thank you for all the memories, Pac. I assume you don't really check around here anymore judging by your profile activity, but this was a great time and I'd still recommend this. You made a young me very happy.
You know something, I played the older version before when you name was Peter_ac instead of Pac.
I give this hack 5 stars, pretty good remake of the original game.
Although this was slightly modified and submitted in 2015, the original hack was actually made way back in 2005-2006. It was pretty damn cool for the standards back then. I guess that's just what happens when the original release dates aren't included in the sections here...
However, the level design here is based off of the official Nintendo games. If you think this is really that bad then you're basically saying that Nintendo's official games are bad too. O_o A level doesn't need to be hard to be fun.
What a fucktard lol
For Now 2/5 stars , might change once i finish .
A very pleasant SMB 1 remix, with colorful and smooth graphics !
The two extra worlds are very fun to play, and the possibility to ride Yoshi through them is very fun.
10/10 (5 stars), thank you very much for your nice work =]
Luansilva12, the download is working lately.
Also, I music remaked this hack using Addmusick.
Some issues found:
- 8-1 is missing hammer brothers.
- You can use Yoshi in this hack once you beat the original game. Means you can bring him in the castles and look how silly his head gets when a podoboo shows.
Overall, a good remake. 3/5.
