Description: This patch replaces the 1/2 player menu with a menu that makes you choose between 'NORMAL' and 'HARD' mode. Note that this patch only prepares $7E:0DB2 to be used as a 'hard game mode' check, and otherwise does nothing to make the game more difficult - except speed up the timer and one-hit kills. This patch is most useful with custom sprites.

You can change the length by editing the 4 byte header's last byte.
I made a version that is easily editable though (here)
Just don't put too much text in there or it'll bug out.

Really? You can't change the text of them? (Glitches the background graphics) Is there a way to change the limit of how many text it should display on the top and bottom? I want Regular Mode and Expert Mode. It shows Regular Mod with the the last E for first one and the Expert Mode missing for some stupid reason.

I don't really like tinkering with custom sprites, but this still makes the game harder nonetheless. This is awesome, and the best part is that there's actually a reason to have the 1 and 2 player select screen :D

An easy way of implementing a hard mode setting. The patch gets a lot better if you're willing to tinker a bit with custom sprites. It shouldn't be too hard even if you're unfamiliar with ASM, since the readme is pretty thorough.
