Widescreen Overworld

SMW Patches → Widescreen Overworld

Submission Details

Name: Widescreen Overworld
Author: Medic
Added:
Version History: View
Tool: Asar
Requires Free Space: Yes
Bug Fix: No
Featured: No
Description: Allows for the full horizontal screen as an overworld.

Hijacks: too many to name, look in the ASM file.
Doesn't use Free RAM.
Note that custom OW sprites need to be modified to include using the X position high bit in $0420 and up in their graphics routine.

Thanks to Vitor Vilela and Alcaro for helping me make this.

this patch seems to mess up the overworld when using luigi, deleting part of some events and even failing to load correct palettes for the current map as well

quite sad since it is a pretty useful patch and allows to have better looking maps

Please update this Patch so Luigi`s GFX are normal on the Overworld...

For newer people running into this patch you need to edit the OW border or you wont see the effect.
If you don't know how to edit the L3 border just do the following.

Load OW → File → Layer 3 Submap → Load Layer 3 of submap
Pick the map you want and edit out the sides one by one just don't forget to save.

Or

Take Border.bin, rename it into ExGFXyy.bin (yy being a not used number between 80 and FFF including), insert it, go to the overworld editor and change the layer 3 tilemap (#lm{l3gfxby}) into the ExGFX file. (stolen from MarioFanGamer)

You want to use the lower settings make sure "Enable bypass of standard layer 3 tileap" is checked and then use "GFX Tilemap file LT3"

the bin file provided with the patch isn't a graphics file it's the tilemap for the border.

I thought this was going to make the overworld squished in order to utilise anamorphic widescreen for TVs.

yes, you actually can, but some black squares appear and it looks horrible

There seems to be a problem with luigis ow sprite. It's left side disappears, atleast in sa-1. (Didn't test without sa-1)
Fixed it by removing this 2 lines, but i don't know if it causes any other bugs:

Code
SEC : SBC Table1,x
SEC : SBC Table2,x

It works ok..
Unfortunately it mess with luigi ow gfx after exiting the level

It's not doing anything for some reason. I am practicing my overworld skills for my Mario Babys sequel. It's just a OW-making ROM with no other stuff inserted.

Neither version has any effect.

Correct.

That isn't a question. But there should be some hex edits in the ROM map that will help you achieve that.

Looks pretty nice actually! I haven't tried this patch out yet, but does this patch also makes the overworld screen a bit centered too?
Like, as shown in the picture, the overworld map is a bit more to the bottom.

Looking good so far though, looks useful. :)

Good job.

Note that once you apply the no-wrap version you no longer can apply the other version without uninstalling the no-wrap version with some patch removing tool like Dessembler.
