Also tested with Yoshi and it works fine for me. Maybe you could disable the "Don't use default interaction with Mario" option.
About the screen issue, yeah it happens because the sprite uses the goal sphere's glitter routine, and that routine was never intended to be used in horizontal levels (remember that the only level where the goal sphere was used was in the vertical section of Sunken Ghost Ship), so the problem could be fixed by hijacking that routine.
