Description: | Kaizo Mario World, also known as Asshole Mario, is a hack created by T. Takemoto for his friend R. Kiba. It features extremely sadistic, unique and groundbreaking level design. This is also the hack that started it all, since the kaizo genre wasn't existent beforehand. The literal translation of "Kaizo Mario World" is "自作の改造マリオ(スーパーマリオワールド)を友人にプレイさせる", or in plain English, "Making my friend play through my Mario hack (Super Mario World)". Kaizo is a rough translation of the word "modify" or "change" in Japanese. |

And now, i can finally say i've beaten it 100% without savestates! Or at least, as reasonably savestateless as it can get... with the advances of the kaizo scene, and infinite lives / retry becoming the norm, it's honestly a shame the official version of Kaizo Mario World available in SMW Central only gives you 5 lives, as that's completely unreasonable to expect from a hack like this (especially when Cerulean Cave exists). So as far as playing "savestateless", what i did was use a savestate at the start and midway point of every level, at least until i reached Dead Sea, where i could farm 99 lives so i could finally play the hack normally.
And now that i've had a taste of the intended way to play this hack (or actually, i did back in 2019 when i finished the main route, but i never finished the Special World until now), i can actually write a thorough review on it.
Well, what i have to say about this hack is that, surprisingly... i think it's a good hack! (For the most part). I know a lot of people say otherwise, but for me most levels still hold up surprisingly well today. I definitely speak as a sucker for old school kaizo, but i think it just stands out very well in style compared to most modern kaizo hacks (which are heavily based on movement flow and stringing tricks together).
I find it really neat how every level presents its own idea in a way that brings a lot of variety, not only through different level themes and ideas, but even down to the gameplay style each level presents. There's a clear difference between Akihabara's somewhat traditional nature, Aneha House's puzzle aspects, Cultural Importance's careful planning and Ultra Star's steady gameplay flow. Most levels can find a place to shine in their own way.
Overall i've had a lot of fun with this hack, and the more i tried it, the more i realized there is a way around even most of the harder setups. Trying to find visual cues works surprisingly well on many levels! (Except Cerulean Cave... and a few others)
Also, with my kaizo skills being better today due to playing newer kaizo hacks, it's pretty cool how i could breeze through some levels. The difficulty of this hack is definitely inconsistent, but that also means the levels aren't consistently difficult, some setups were pretty chill to get through, even some that might look scary. Overall, the difficulty of most levels is contained in 2 or 3 setups that are big difficulty spikes (often for all the wrong reasons), and having the necessary skill to breeze through every setup aside from those 2/3 helped a lot in making the levels more manageable.
Overall, most of the easier levels took me 5 to 40 minutes to beat (granted i already knew the layout, and had previously beaten all levels in the main path), the only levels beyond that were: Cerulean Cave (2 hours), Ultra Star (1 hour), Special Stage 1 (2.5 hours), Special Stage 3 (1.5 hours), and Last Special Stage (1.5 hours).
I have to say i was surprised to find out i actually enjoyed even the Special World levels. I always thought the Special World would be the most miserable part of the Kaizo Mario World 100% experience, and i have to say i was mostly mistaken, every Special World level could bring me some enjoyment in one way or another, and in the end i hated them way less than i thought i would.
Although there were definitely miserable moments, some of which overstayed their welcome by a long shot. Despite not being the level that took me the longest, i'd say the hardest level in the hack was Special Stage 3. And the most miserable experiences were Cerulean Cave and Last Special Stage.
Overall, i mostly enjoyed playing this hack. I think there's definitely a lot of good in here, more than some people give it credit for, but there's definitely some rotten moments that can taint the entire experience due to how much they can get in the way (single jumps that can take well over 1 hour to overcome, in a level that otherwise takes 10 minutes).
This was a milestone for me, in terms of progressing in my kaizo journey. It certainly boosted my motivation, especially after beating the Special World, and makes me feel like i can conquer much more than what i initially believed! As such it is a hack i would recommend most kaizo players to eventually experience, although it's better tackled after you've gotten comfortable with kaizo, because the only thing that's worse than getting stuck in the stupid difficulty spikes in this hack, would be getting stuck in them while also struggling with the normal setups.
In the end, i'll give it a 3/5. It's an iconic and well designed hack, but also brutal, inconsistent and often unfair.

The good:
Most levels are really good and just take a lot of practice.
The bad:
Some levels are so unfair that it's just not fun anymore. The first special level is really RNG-based so it becomes about luck and not skill. Similarly, in Cerulean Cave there is a jump during the autoscroll section that is a one-frame window and also RNG-based. That's not fun, because even if I play perfectly there's a chance I'll lose a dice roll and my effort goes to waste.
Later kaizo hacks have done better. They keep the difficulty the same, but they make it more fair so that perfect play means you beat the level.
That is my Challenge
Edit: i did it
classic.
Got to the Valley of Bowser years ago but sadly never beat this due to the PC I was playing this on breaking. Shoutouts to Guy Collins.
4/5
Has anyone ever tried to revamp the Kaizo Mario World series? Because I don't see T. Takemoto is okay with remaking his hacks by others.

Very fun hack. Definitely recommend to anyone who likes Kaizo.
This hack was made in 2007, I'm pretty sure it and its sequels are being submitted here for novelty.
