The extra bit determines whether the spawned sprite has got its extra bit set or not. Other settings (sprite number, sprite being normal or custom, smoke and checking for Mario) are found in the ASM file.
I don't know if anyone else is having this issue, but in an enclosed, single-screen level, like a boss room, this will cause the game to crash after spawning around 4 to 6 sprites.
A few suggestions:
1) Make an option to Shoot only left/right.
2) Turn Shooter Timer into Define for Max user friendliness.
