It works for the underground background but when I use it with grassland backgrounds it flickers very hard when I finish the level.

I discovered a small bug with the UberASM where the lightning still flashes when the game is paused. To fix this, simply paste this right under the 'main:' label:

You can use animated palettes for the lightning effect. Even though there's a difference of time between the sound and the animation. Which I guess it kinda makes it a little bit realistic.

Sometimes the flashing effect of the lighning isn't appearing, it only generates the sound. Is it because I'm using minimalist status bar?

Great but there is a bug when you pause the game after or before the thunder, the palette effect and sound effect will endlessly play, unless the player unpause the game

Previously a generator, converted to UberASMTool code to avoid waste of sprite slots. But for convenience, a PIXI-converted generator version is also included for those who want to activate the effect in very specific circumstances. Added screenshot, tags and SA-1 support.
