Having played through the entire hack, and obtained almost every star in the game except for like 15, I can say that I really enjoyed this hack.
Every world is unique and really encourages you to explore.
The game feels as though it was created by Nintendo, as every star is very creative and the entire map is utilized in order to obtain them.
The music from other games was nice and brought back many memories.
I always hate writing a bad section, but it is always necessary.
My first complaint is precise platforming. Some of my complaints (this one particularly) with this game are more directed towards SM64 as a whole. Having recently played Super Mario Sunshine, I was getting quite frustrated when this ROM Hack would require precise platforming since the beginning of the hack. Platforming is very easy in Sunshine, but in this game the physics are not as precise. However, players that are better than me and are used to SM64's engine and physics probably would not have a hard time. Therefore, I am not going to take off this for rating since this is just because I suck at this game. LOL.
Cheap, Overused Enemies
One of my first actual complaints was how often certain enemies are used in this hack. One example is the Green Balls that shoot fire. I am not exaggerating when I say they are in almost every level and are almost always placed on the platforming parts with no purpose other than to be annoying. Challenge is one thing, but this was just annoying and overused. Because of the nature of how fire works in this game, if you get hit by the fire, you might as well just pause and exit the course because you are guaranteed to fall to your death and die on any of the platforming parts if you are on fire. They are even present in every , single , boss battle, making them way too difficult. Even the first battle with King Bob-omb is stupidly challenging because of them, and this is in the first level. And since it takes about five-ten minutes just to get to him, the very first star can take you quite a while to get without savestates.
I am more critiquing this because there are some parts of the game that almost beg the use of savestates. Specifically, the second level Bowser battle (The Fire Fort, I think it is called). Near the end of the level, the distances you are expected to jump are so far, and of course there are enemies on the platforms as well. One mistake sends you ALL the way back to the beginning, and this gets old really fast. It takes about fifteen minutes to get to this part too. I just do not see how you could beat this area without cheating, or else it would probably take you over thirty minutes for just trying one part. This is not counting all of the time it takes you to get there.
This is also present in other areas too, like the Desert level. For one part, you have to jump on the backs of slippery pyramids in order to progress. Of course it is difficult. However, the problem is that this part takes about five to ten minutes to get to. So, every time you mess up (and it took me about 50-60 tries using savestates because of how difficult it is), you go back to the beginning of the level. To make matters worse, this pyramid section was not even the end of the level, as you still need to climb the pyramid after to get the star. So, platforming in this game is sometimes unbelievable hard without savestates.
Overall though, this was a great hack and I enjoyed it a lot. Besides those two complaints, I easily rate this hack 4/5. This is by far one of my favorite ROM Hacks that I have played in a while, and recommend it to anyone.
Challenge 3/5, 4/5 without savestates
