Mario Saves Christmas, a 13-exit hack by Green Jerry.
I have completed this Christmas-themed hack with all the exits found. As an end result, I would definitely recommend playing this hack during the Holiday season. All of the levels have excellent ASM, and the music choice feels just like being a part of the Christmas joy! As a reviewer/critic of Mario rom hacks, I would definitely want to play Mario Saves Christmas again and again, throughout every Christmas season!
As for the hack in general, I saw the exgfx of the hack look very professional, and there are some unique visuals that make this Christmas rom hack very special. Some of the setups to the custom tiles fit textbook perfect, especially the tiles where the player in a fire flower suit can melt the ice. The enemies, including the Ice Bros. and piranha plants (which blow spike balls), were phenomenally placed in every level I've encountered in the hack!
As for the near-ending I don't seem to know why the final boss (Ludwig) throw red balls and NOT hurt the player. The final boss was extremely simple to beat, so simple that anyone without experience with 2D platformers can beat it in a few seconds.
Overall, Christmas hacks are meant for enjoyment and fun, and I liked everything about Mario Saves Christmas! I think this hack has all the bells and whistles of what a Christmas-themed level should be made, other than the boss battle being too simplistic. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
With a mug of hot cocao in the hand and having dived behind my SNES emulator, I can conclude that this hack is pretty good. It has a few questionable choices in music and there are a couple of minor bugs and glitches (examples include getting stuck in the ceiling in the Lakitu level and an empty message box in an athletic themed stage), however on the flip side the level design is usually a good mix between 'Mario' and 'new' and have more than enough substance. Reccomended to play on New Year's Eve as it's a holiday too, right?
