This simple code includes two features that can turn out useful, especially for vertical levels: free vertical scrolling (which makes the camera always follow Mario, rather than waiting for him to land on something) and no horizontal scrolling (if you want to have a one screen wide vertical level).
Both settings can be turned on or off independently in the asm file. Make sure to enable "Vertical Scroll at Will" in Lunar Magic if using the free vertical scroll setting.
Seems to make sprites spawn as early as 20 tiles above (tested via the sound of a koopa kicking a shell), but I can work around that. It completely eliminates blindness when ascending quickly.
