HYPERION is a chocolate hack featuring expanded graphics, extra and modified sprites, fresh palettes, and a custom soundtrack. This game focuses on platforming rather than trick-heavy setups, so you will find limited item abuse or shell techniques here (there is a light sprinkling of kaizo trolls though).
The overworld paths are branching with the secret exits and switch palaces being necessary to complete the game, but your movement is sped up and your progress auto saves as you move. There are also a handful of secrets and easter eggs throughout the game for exploratory players. HYPERION is my first hack and my labour of love for the past year, I hope you enjoy.
See the included Credits.txt for detailed list of assets and resources used and the Soundtrack.txt for all the music used.
has anyone got this working on the snes classic using any of the retroarch cores? im really enjoying this hack and would love to proceed past the level flight hazard. thanks in advance!
Ran into an issue playing on the latest version of BSNES. Game Keeps freezing up when i get to a specific rope slide on one of the exits on Lava Foothills. Don't know if this has been brought up yet. It has froze the game in the same spot twice in a row.
Can't say I've heard there being issues, but I tested here on bsnes v115 and it does indeed freeze (but not if you one-shot the section first try). I don't I know what exactly is causing it, but the freeze seems to happen right when the rope goes offscreen and despawns. It's fixed in the latest version, available above.
Great hack so far! Unfortunally, i discovered a bug when playing on my snes classic. In the level flight hazard, right after the checkpoint the game is freezing for me But anyway, great work!
Yeah this was present and reported in the original as well, there is a custom sprite that is incompatible with the internal emulator on the SNES Classic.
ahhhhhhhh, just finished this and loved it so much! a joy to play, and looks and sounds gorgeous as well. immediately one of my fave hacks, thanks for making <3
This hack is really wonderful, but it's also really hard and with legitimate settings... I played it, but I didn't finish it... I'll finish it in the old version and play this new version to see the changes. I hope this new version really surprises me...
This hack was great! All the levels looked so good, and the whole hack fits together very nicely. The branching paths lead to a very grand feel, which I loved. Overall, I had a wonderful time with this hack.
Really killer hack. I love your get up and go style of level making. Everything flowed really well, and with exception of one or two little spots, the hack was fast but not rushed. It's really awesome when you can just go, and things just work. A few levels felt a little too short, but overall I appreciated that things didn't drag on and overstay their welcome. Additionally, the soundtrack was absolutely kicking. One of the best I've heard. Really helped each level come to life.
I'd say the only part of the entire hack I really didn't care for was the first room of the Abyssal Spire, where the homing orbs quite often meant you just had no shot at all. Everything else was great. Excellent work!
Great hack overall. I really liked the difficulty, I felt like it got harder as the game went on and is a nice next step up from intro hacks, but maybe not as hard as Akogare. 5/5
One of the very best-looking hacks out there, and a fun play. It's mostly on the easier side, though spikes into intermediate at times with some tougher jumps and sequences. Solid hack, well done.
Absolutely incredible level design, aesthetics, and overworld pathing. Each level was so unique and a joy to play. A great hack for intermediate players to gain some knowledge with set ups, chocolate mechanics, and phenomenal design!
great hack, one thing, hope this can be patched, playing on my snes mini Canoe core, Fligh Hazard level glitches after midsave, does not happen on SNES9X though.
5/5 hack
Very well made hack with a nice intermediate level of difficulty. You can tell a lot of love was poured into this hack and I look forward to what the creator puts out next.
Only criticism is a little jank/spawn depenency on a level or two but those are minor issues. Well done AmperSam!
Really well made hack. Fun levels that never overstay their welcome. Nice "expanded vanilla" look to a lot of the graphics as well as some custom details that really stand out. Highly recommend as a step up after the Quickies. No crazy tech that will really stump a newer player just good solid platforming for the most part. My favorite level was probably
Clearly a lot of work went into this. It shines aesthetically, where there's quite a bit a very creative stuff. Creative gameplay, too, though I found some parts a little rote/unadventurous. Music choices honestly didn't do much for me, though that's a pretty minor complaint.
Overall a solid hack, and I'm definitely looking forward to more from you, AmperSam!
Fun hack. Had a few issues here and there like the platforms despawning during the pokey head fight, but overall it was well done. Loved the secrets/aesthetics.
Really great experience with Hyperion. I can definitely see the love and care you put into the design. Loved the visuals and music choices in the entire hack. My favorite levels was the ghost cave, the vertical section in beta particles, and the final lvl and boss.
I just finished this hack and I absolutely loved it! It was just what I needed to de-rust SMW. There are a few nitpicky things I didn't like here and there. Biggest one is if you hit exit on the final level after clearing a room and getting a checkpoint (before boss CP at least) you lost the CP and have to start from the beginning again. That could be frustrating for newer players.
This is one of favourite hacks! I had a blast. The design, graphics, palettes, music, graphics, world map, everything was on point. I thought the final boss was a little on the easy side, but the first room of the final level more than made up for it IMO. Thanks for making this!
Great hack, great choice of music but can someone tell me the name of the song in the level "The Amityvilla"(The ghost house).
I thought it was a real banger.
The CREDITS.txt has the music listed by level and with links to them here on SMWCentral.

Was thoroughly enjoying this hack up until the crash in the airship (I’m playing on SNES classic so I’m guessing this is the known bug?) Hopefully there’s an update that corrects this issue as I was having a blast and would love to continue this journey.
Well this is a new incompatibility I've been made aware of. I don't know what the specific causes are in any of the cases and since SNES Classic players also can't finish the hack I don't know the extent of the incompatibility. Addressing it with an update would likely mean removing ASM or overhauling levels and I likely won't be doing that.
Upon opening the ROM in lunar magic it appears the game crashes at the exact point the custom P Balloon spawns on screen. It must be something in the code that the SNES can’t handle.
I understand the difficulty in having to address the problems and the head aches it would cause so not to worry. I look forward to anything else you may release in the future as this is very solid work.

Great hack. I think I'm about half way through it currently. I'm not that great at kaizo hacks and haven't been playing them very long but I'd say this hack is probably beginner friendly. Stages are mostly easy (my death count would disagree) but there's always that 1 spot per stage I absolutely struggle with.
Has anyone had issues on Ghostly Grotto level? I was having a blast with this hack, but I got to Ghostly Grotto, and whenever I enter it, the "MARIO START!" message appears, and right afterwards, the game freezes (some weird horizontal lines appear). I used Flips regularly just like I've previously done with dozens of other hacks. Never had this happen to me
I will assume you are playing on SNES Classic, as others have found a compatibility issue with that level in that emulator. I can't guarantee there are no other incompatibilities (a forthcoming update adds a disclaimer about SNES Classic).
Yeah I saw Chambo87 run into the same problem on twitch. I was actually using a very old Snes9x emu. I never had any trouble, but I guess it's time for an upgrade. Thanks for the reply dude, and congrats, this is a very high quality hack, keep up the good work .

Really cool hack from what I've played so far! I like how much solid ground there is, and how you're generally safe if you take your time rather than one-cycling every obstacle.
I think I found one bug: The bowling balls sometimes hurt you when you jump on them. My guess is that the hitboxes are designed around having the frame rule patched but this hack doesn't have the frame rule patched, so you clip into them if you're moving too fast.
The frame rule is patched. It's more that the hitbox on these balls is not intuitive to the size of the ball, unfortunately, and less reliable when their speed is increased.

For the little I played, I loved it! In the screenshots I found some sessions with strong colors that hurt the eyes. Other than that, I really liked it!

The beach? It's Super Adventure Island - Beach.
