Cluster Fire Bowser Statue

SMW Sprites → Cluster Fire Bowser Statue

Submission Details

Name: Cluster Fire Bowser Statue
Author: JamesD28
Added:
Tool: PIXI
Type: Standard
Dynamic: No
Disassembly: No
Includes GFX: Yes
Description: This is a variant of the Bowser Statue sprite, that can shoot cluster sprites as it's flame projectiles instead of normal sprites. This allows many more projectiles onscreen at once without filling sprite slots, and also has a performance boost compared to the vanilla Bowser Fire sprites (for reference, the screenshots below are demonstrated on LoROM with fastROM disabled).

See the .asm file for customization options and extra byte usage.

Note that while the cluster sprite approximates the vanilla fire sprites as closely as possible, there may be a small difference in player interaction. Additionally, the fire uses ExGFX with 16x16 flame tiles due to limitations with cluster OAM allocation.

Is it possible to make the stationary version face the right direction, instead of left? I was just wondering, since the gifs only showcase stationary versions shooting to the left.

Added enemy tag.

Most of the time this sprite is quite a nice addition given that you can easily fill up all your normal sprite slots with the fireballs.
I have noticed two things during moderation, though: For one, Yoshi's interaction is a bit janky with the hurting stationary statues in the sense that he still expects them to be solid (you get pushed upwards) and for the other, the cluster fireball has got a slighter higher hitbox than their normal counterparts which means they can kill the player who stands on a Bowser Statue when this is not possible with the vanilla fireballs. Neither of them are very game breaking but it still would be nice if you fixed them.

The first issue also happens with vanilla solid sprites and I think it’s interesting. I assume the second one could be fixed by adjusting the hitbox and clipping values?
