Description: | This patch re-enables an unused feature in Yoshi's Island that tracks the player's life total between resets, and fixes a bug in its implementation that would cause it to load the incorrect life count if the player had over 255 lives. There are also two fields for users to edit. You can set Yoshi's starting life count when creating a new save file, or when continuing after a game over. |

This seems like a useful quality-of-life patch in general, since it seems to make much more sense to actually save the number of lives instead of resetting them each time. I always thought it was strange seeing the number of lives in the SRAM Map, since it was there but wasn't actually used.
There is one main thing to keep in mind, though, which is that this patch only saves lives when the game normally saves to SRAM. This occurs when completing a level for the first time or improving your high score, playing any bonus game or Bandit minigame, or defeating Baby Bowser. In particular, if you complete a level that you have already completed without improving your high score or playing a bonus game, the game will not save to SRAM so this patch currently will not save lives upon completion. It also won't save lives if you exit a level with Start+Select or don't try again after losing a life.
