Length: 69 exit(s)
Type: Standard: Hard, Kaizo: Beginner
Description: (1.2: aesthetic tweaks, balancing, fixes and the hud no longer goes behind ground)

this is the hack that i've been working on for the past year. it's a bit like "test.smc" in the sense that it's mainly built out of my and woop's unreleased and/or unfinished levels made over mutiple years (i think the earliest ones are from 2018), homever the changes vary to "touched up a bit" to "completely new level". despite this, there is an overarching story

i had a lot of fun making this thing, (most of the time, anyway) and it rekindled my interest in smw hacking... maybe it might even be fun to play
also, the difficulty is aimed at people who are already familiar with smw hacks, but it should be beatable even if you've only played the original

- PLOT -

Something is happening!

Pretty good hack. The levels here are creative. Not all of them ended up being fun,
CROSSING THE LINE and STRIPE LANDS in particular were atrocious, but other than that, most levels were solid.
The gameplay felt a little kaizo-ish at random points, and that's cool. The design of most levels were great.
- The star world was a mix for me, GO FAST, DON'T RUN and RGB-CMYK2 were not that great, but TURBO GREENHOUSE and soup of star were fantastic.
- At certain times, the graphics of blocks and things would be confusing, some would be solid and some wouldn't, leads to trial and error sometimes
- In terms of story, from what I gather, the world got corrupted by Mario doing something and a sacrifice is needed, for something, maybe it's to save the world. There is not much that happens after the final stage except for Mario not appearing at the end during the egg hatching scene, and the flower at the "the end" screen, probably confirming that Mario sacrificed himself to save the world (Unless, plot twist, it was to awaken a benevolent entity)

Overall, a pretty unique hack. It's worth a play, and if you like a bit of kaizo like gameplay, then you'll have even more fun with this.

oh hey you got what i was trying to do with the plot! also both crossing the line and stripe lands used to be far worse lol
(stripe lands gave you half the powerups, nothing at the beginning and crossing the line had a much lower time limit and a precise jump at the end of one of the sections)
thank you for playing :) also yeah.. those 2 star world levels are probably my least favorite too

Nah. I just found myself thinking, "it sure would be annoying if I had to replay this section a lot and do this intro each time" but then I beat it in one or two tries. I think this is something that would be detrimental to a hypothetical player who did in fact in play this as their first hack after vanilla Super Mario World, but I've played quite a few and so didn't get stuck on anything for too long.
 BeeKaay Link
Added a "Kaizo: Beginner" difficulty due to "soup of star", along with some other sections which had to be done in a particular way and did not give you a powerup.

I generally enjoyed my time with this one. The level design was always interesting and varied, and usually felt fair: sections with really tough obstacles tended to be short.

Most of my nitpicks concern the custom graphics, in that I had no intuition for how a lot of the blocks behaved. For example, the Mario-solid and sprite-solid blocks used graphics I'd never seen before and took some getting used to, and it took me some time to internalize that this and this were air.

Other nitpicks:

- This hack uses 1-up checkpoints, but a few levels at the end of the game have monochrome mushroom sprites, and I couldn't tell whether a mushroom that had popped up was a powerup or a 1-up checkpoint until I touched it or died.
- Some levels require you to wait a while, like for boo rings to pass, or to wait for a cutscene then run through empty space to begin the level.
- The Dry Bones that's supposed to be here didn't spawn the first time I got to it. You actually don't need it and can make the jump straight to the one on top, but it's very tight.
- This is a blind jump.
eltiolavara9 Author Link
yeah, fair
though i'd like to fix the nitpick stuff you mentioned, i'm really not sure how to fix them, changing the color of the 1-up could screw up something else in the level and i tried to mitigate the waiting as much as possible (though i do want the player to take in the mood and not just go instantly in some of the final levels), was there any level where it was especially annoying?
(also yes that's a blind jump but the only thing below is ground)
anyway glad you enjoyed it #tb{:j}

In the course
"OINGO BOINGO" #lm{level} 12, #lm{music} 69
, what is that music? It's so goofy and whimsical that I just want to listen to it for no reason as I'm gracefully pillaging the internet.

Also, will there be any updates or sequels to this? I just want to see more of this absolute disasterpiece of a masterpiece.

Thanks, PK

thank you so much!! the music for OINGO BOINGO is this port of Casino Paradise Zone

and yes, there's one more update coming - 1.2, but there won't be much new stuff, just polish (level changes, fixes, some song changes, etc)
i am making another hack though

From the beautiful looks through the WHOLE hack, to very cool gimmicks, sure i had to use save states much in the later parts of the game - WAY too hard things for me - despite that, "What did Mario do?" just doesn't stop on giving! I cannot thank enough the author for putting all their effort into this!

I did run into one issue in Second Wonder, where I touched the goal tape, and the game took like 2 minutes to finish the level, and then it killed me. I think because I was close to the left of the screen when I touched the tape? But not sure. I would definitely recommend fixing that.

Overall though, I enjoyed my stream of this hack. Though my chat kept asking me What Mario Did, and we never got closure on that, so that was kinda weird.

that issue will be fixed in the next update, glad you enjoyed it! (turns out if you finish too close to the autoscroller, mario never gets a chance to do his pose and the level doesn't know to end)
as for what mario did.. uh... he referenced mother 3

i had no idea about most of these and this is insanely useful, glad you enjoyed it! i'll update it again as soon as i can

No problems. Don't rush, make sure to take the time to test everything before posting the update. If you need more details from something I posted in the pdf feel free to ask be by private message.

Also this hack had two Standard difficulty rating and only one is allowed. I chose Standard : Hard, because that's how I felt when playing the game. Only the last special world level felt a bit too hard, but was still okay for me. But if you feel it should be Very Hard, please let me know.

yeah "as soon as i can" was bad wording on my part
difficulty change's fine, i just wasn't sure

This hack was very good. I had fun playing it. The levels are very varied and even if the gameplay is classic, the levels have a good flavor to them. I like the palettes, especially the more brighter in the starting levels. That creepy feeling that slowly build up through the hack is quite good and never hinder the gameplay. The difficulty was fine too. Although I think you are a bit too generous with power-ups, but it's better than the opposite. The special world was nice, but feels like it unlock a bit too early. Well it is optional so that's fine.

There was no major errors, so I approve it. I found some minors errors that I listed in this document : https://bin.smwcentral.net/u/410/What_did_Mario_do.pdf&key=65imHtv6. Some are my opinions though so you may ignore them. The hack is already good and approved, but if you wish to do an update, please look into what I listed and feel free to fix those you want.

And last
"it's a bit like "test.smc" in the sense that it's mainly built out of my and woop's unreleased and/or unfinished levels made over mutiple years"
That makes me happy.
Everyone who has unfinished levels, please finish and submit them in a hack! #tb{:DD}

One consistent trend I've noticed in your level design is that challenge is often loaded into the initial sections of a level or right after the midpoint. I don't know if this is intentional, and there are a few levels that notably don't follow this trend. However, it's a practice that I've always wanted to see more of because it minimizes the amount of time wasted dying on hard obstacles while raising the stakes for easier segments. To the extent that this was an intentional design choice, I think it worked out very well and made a lot of levels more enjoyable and exciting.

it is intentional, thanks! i think it just works better normally, yea

Just finished the hack. It's great! I have some observations:

1. Is Sacrifice really the last level? I dunno, it's just that the game's ending didn't really feel like an ending to me.
2. I still have no idea what Mario has done, though I guess the game's storyline is open to interpretation on purpose. I hope we get a sequel to that storyline.
3. Can I please get a list of all the tracks included in this hack? There are some major bangers here!

That's pretty much it. I hope to see more from you in the future! #smw{:TUP:}#smw{:TUP:}

yes it's the last level, i really don't know how to code fancy boss stuff so the ending is kind of a letdown. but maybe i could add one of these really crusty "enter a door like 10 times" cutscene of some sort
tracklist is on credits.txt, as for the story... "what did mario do" was just a title i thought sounded fitting (also mother 3 reference) and doesn't have that much to do with the hack's story, which is about the world itself
i'm not sure if i will make a sequel to this story or whatever (maybe clear up things a liiittle bit (i submitted an update that changes a bit of the text) but i dont want to make it less obnoxiously cryptic)
anyways thank you a ton for the comment! i am making another hack, idk what form it'll take but i really don't want to take forever to make it again

if you stop holding down or press anything else you'll stop sliding and being invincible, it's not explained the best

The following is a negative assessment of a level in this hack. I must emphasize that this is still a good hack, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who is considering giving it a shot.

CROSSING THE LINE is the first level I strongly disliked. The time limit is far too low, and forcing the player to rush through the level brings out the worst in many of the obstacles. The setups where you have to time yourself with bouncing Koopa shells are very finicky, for example, and you don't have much spare time to wait for optimal timing. The final obstacle in the first room is also tricky in a way that doesn't feel good, and getting Lakitu to throw Spinies at the exact right time to bounce into the pipe wastes a lot of time that the player doesn't really have. The decision to have two one-tile-high passages about a third of the way through the level is incomprehensible; I died multiple times by phasing through the floor while trying to duck jump underneath them.

It's a shame because the overall idea of the level is pretty interesting, but several obstacles are just a little bit too finicky and wind up ruining the experience. Giving the player a little more room to move, more time to complete the level, or a midpoint would have made it feel much more fair.

ohh shit i knew i forgot something, i think i wanted to tweak that level but didn't you could say it crossed the line
EDIT: submitted the update, also did a bunch of misc changes (turns out it also had a broken pipe)

that's here as an anti-softlock, but it might not be needed anymore

Completed world 1 and a few levels of world 2.
Initial thoughts:
Overall good, creative levels. Lots of tight platforming, but nothing overly demanding (yet).
Most of these levels would be right at home in VLDC, and not just because of their use of vanilla graphics. Each level seems designed to be both memorable and self-contained. At the same time, the gimmickry is mostly confined to vanilla gameplay elements, and chocolate features tend to be small extensions of vanilla gameplay; for example, note blocks that bounce the player from the side as well as from the top.
Provisional rating of 5/5 because the hack is fun so far.
Would appreciate a way to save between castles.

the side bouncing note blocks aren't even chocolate, just a small map16 edit to make them look different
thanks, though! as for saving, i thought that since neither the levels or worlds are very long and there's sort of "life farms" in yoshi's house (or houses?) i thought it wasnt too important, but i might add a way to save quicker
