Description: | (v1.3) Here is Dr. Mario World. 7+ years of off and on work. I still didn't get to do the stuff that I planned to do and was officially done with this back in early 2012 but I lost all my data on a HD crash and had to use a really old backup to restore the hack, so here it is. v1.3 Fixes yet another bug caused by LM Secondary and Midway entrance handling. |

My notes from Mario playthrough:
This hack has a lot of custom. 2 playable characters, Dr. Mario and Wario, and each has their own abilities. As Mario, pressing R fires a pill kind of like a fireball but it has an ammo count that's maintained between levels. Player has 3hp. There are shops where things like feathers and health can be bought using lives as currency. New things get introduced in shops as the game goes on like a "metal Mario" pill that acts like a star and negates water physics. I love this powerup and wish it was used more often. Capes can only be found in shops. Flight can't be maintained and Mario can't twirl except while spin jumping.
There is story. People are sick, make them not be that. The game is laid out in Chapters instead of Worlds. There is no overworld. Levels are instead selected from a list scribbled down on a notepad, really neat aesthetic.
Levels seem to skew small-to-medium sized. Occasionally the game takes advantage of the unique powerups like blocks that can only be broken with fireballs (pills). Bosses are
Notes from Wario playthrough:
I didn't enjoy this game as much the second time around. Wario's power feels useless at best, harmful at worst. There's some badly placed checkpoints imo, some leading to long run backs on death. The
Each playthrough took a little under 4 hours. Video of both playthroughs: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqvIHerHvautECo1vmUzG1FXOAIGv-yAo
The ASM changes are very well done, and so are the graphics. The idea of replacing the lives with seeds that count for money for buying new power-ups is very interesting !
Gameplay is very good too, you put a nice difficulty curve and the game can totally be beaten without using savestates.
Love the metal mario invincibility power-up a lot =]
10/10 (5 stars) Thank you very much =]

GRAPHICS 2*(10/10): The style of this game was amazing. When I first started playing, made me feel like "I should have saved this game to later because I won't find anything better now". Notable work there. I admit I didn't feel this way many time while playing SMW hacks, so congratulations there.
**************
LEVELS 3*(7/10): While the graphics impressed me, levels not that much. I mean, when you start, until you finish the second world, it's great. After that, you realize you are basically always doing the same thing. There were some very nice scenarios, but the problem was none of the levels are actually memorable. They are not bad, just are not great either.
Enemies variety is very low. I'm not saying you must add new enemies to a game to make it good, but you hardly used the enemies that already were in the game. And they don't change much when you proceed to a next world.
The virus scenarios were great. I know they are basically the only thing that appear there, but that's what the game is about, so no problems there.
I liked you didn't make the keys uber hard to find. There's nothing worse than kill yourself to find things for something unrewarding.
I thought you were lazy with some things, like the bees in the hive level. They are obviously zaps with another sprite, though the honey idea was nice.
The house were you find Peach without new items is a bit disappointing, there just no reason to go there and is a waste of time finding it.
The rainbow levels were nice. Inspired by Mario Land, but has a touch of Mario Kart's rainbow road too. I've never seen that before. Good one.
******************
BOSSES 1*(2.5/10): This was the only really bad thing on the game. I liked how you used the viruses, but all the bosses, except the last one, which is tap-tap, are minor variations of the generic boss, already overused by many hackers, or the big boo boss. Fighting them wasn't fun at all. Said that, the level here you fight all virus bosses again was the one I disliked the most. I felt like I faced the same boss like 8 times in the game, including the black Mario, also a generic boss.
******************
OVERWORLD 1*(9/10): This was what made me want to play the game. So simple, yet so fitting. Not for Wario's game, but nothing can be done about that.
******************
FUN FACTOR 2*(7/10): You had many original ideas, but unfortunately the game is repetitive. After you play the first 2 worlds, like I said, you have seen 90% of what the game has to offer. This is my opinion. All you have made kept my interest in still playing it, and I didn't regret doing so. Even with the problems, was still a unique experience.
******************
STORY 2*(8.5/10): It's cool to see how some story makes the game much better. Very few people pay that much attention to the story. I didn't understand what that black Mario at the end means, however. But you said there would be an explanation, so I'll be waiting.
Problem is you apparently killed Toadette in the last castle. Peach said to wait for our return, than the castle collapses and Toadette is not seen again. Is a minor problem, but had to be mentioned.
******************
BUG: During Wario's gameplay, while the castle collapses, if you run out of time, Wario disappears and appear in another room. Then the screen fades, and he enters there again, you get stuck like that forever. I had problems worse than that with another hack. I won't say that's your fault or if I'm the problem.
*****************
FINAL NOTES: I really liked things you did, like choosing who you want to use, the unique abilities they have, and you can see the story from two different point of view. It's the first game I played that worked that way, and you deserve credits for that.
It's one of the first reviews I don't look like a cranky person, so thanks for that chance.
